neversong 08-19-2002, 05:14 AM is it just me or 3dsmax5.0 is just like that?
I was using final render in 4.2,
but in 5.0... it doesn't work.

It works for me.
But I'm noticeing a crash bug in the max5 render. I'm trying to figure out what triggers it and I have to reboot the computer to clear it.

Could you be more specific about what crash fR under max5 ? Actually there is no bug about fR+max5. Have you 1.0 or 1.4 version of fR ?

well, in my case,
I don't see any of the FR menus even after I installed it.
it's FR 1.0.
oh, and one more thing...
you guys know the HDRI pluggin from splutter fish?
does it work with your 3dsmax5.0?
I think I have problem also with that.
I just don't see the menu.
Actually, I might try to install different version of FR later.
thnks guys.

are you sure fR is loaded ?
right clic on a toolbat and go to customize to put fR globals button. Even in medit, you don't see fR mtl ?
I don't know if 1.0 works on max5, go to cebas family and download 1.4 update, it is also cleaner and faster, with better controls.

Also, the HDR loader from splutterfish may cause difficulty importing HDR images into FR. I used to have both installed, even if I set the FR importer when loading the image, the Brazil importer would take over. Could have just been me, but I removed the Brazil importer, and now use FR when using HDR. Oh this was under Max 4.26.

Yes I have 1.0, the crash I'm getting isn't caused by FnR it's the max render. I still can't tell what triggers the crash. I was using Shag hair made lots of renders then I loaded another file and made another render and max crashed right after the render was finnished. Once I get the crash then I always get the crash no matter what I'm rendering. I have to reboot my machine to clear it. I don't know if shag hair has something to do with it sometimes I get it and I haven't used shag. Kinda strange.
I just got it using peter watje 3d paint material. I think it's a material issue.
Do anyone have this bug?

If you are losing sleep over HDR images just save them as TIF files from HDR shop and you can use them without plugins in 3D S Max 5

Then it won't be a hdr anymore. hdr contains many more informations than any other 8bit color format.

KiboOst :
3DSMAX5 nattively only support's hdr images in the form of floating point TIFF's. With hdr shop you can load an save them

ah ok real3d, didn't knew this. I was saying this because many people think importing a tiff into hdrshop and just saving it to .hdr make this tiff a hdr...even if it is still a ldr.

Yup TIFF has many types including a floating point lesser known cousin.
here is all the good info on TIFF
http://home.earthlink.net/~ritter/tiff/
Sorry for not being clearer, an 8 bit TIFF is still LDR, but a floating point TIFF is HDR, and can be used natively in 3dmaxR5

Cutomize/preference/Advanced lighting.
if you enable 'Display Reflectance & Transmittance Information'
then the max render becomes very unstable.
I FOUND MY BUG.
Nothing to do with Final Render, but I can add this.
Final Render's (1.0) GI seems much faster than max's GI. Also I have a high poly character and I can't get it to render without severe lighting artifacts. Final Render does it perfectly.
