I decided to make the spaceship that's taking off more futuristic

Now that's a topic I really like! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/grin.gif

What I'm gonna try to illustrate:
The tragic day when the planet of light (homeworld of the 'insert name here') overwhelmed by the dark fleet surrendered to the 'insert name here'. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Sketch coming soon.

Well, that's a first concept sketch. The city consists of many veryvery high skyscrapers. There's gonna be one giant ship of the invaders and some small ones.
There will be holographic projections all over the city, and it's gonna be viewed from inside a building so we can see some habitants of this planet.

nice start. maybe think about how you can involve figures.

Hi Fabian,

Great futuristic look! I think that it would be nice if you could show the ground/streets so we could get an idea of how high and majestic the buildings really are.

Hello Mark

The buildings are too high to make it possible to see the ground...

Because the habitants of this planet can fly and because almost the entire surface is covered with constructions of any sort, there are many hovering nature parks between the skyskrapers. Many of those have a holographic projector on the bottom where normally Ads are displayed, but now there is written: 'we surrender!'

welcome to the fray!

i like this concept. it has a soft feel with a sinister undertone. im going to assume youve gone through the the same thought process that i have when thinking of this process, but just incanse:

i feel the use of sky and light will be a key element when portraying the planet of light (duh =]). if you can represent the enemies attacks in a form non-physical, but rather on a symbolic level, itll serve more punch! basically what im thinking is the enemy taking away the light, the sky, stuff like that. i think you ahve the idea already from the concept so far.

but tahts what i think might be cool. but my word is far from gospel, im just trying to get some creative juices flowing, so i hope this helps any.

best of luck
Pete.

I see, you've understood exactly what I wanna do, but was unable to explain because I'm not that good in english... Only one thing: There will be no attack. The habitants of the planet of light (hopefully I will come up with a better name someday...) are peacefull people, and though theyr military is much stronger than the one of the invaders their fleet is spread all across the galaxy 'cause they control many planets wich need defense.
Therefor the invaders lauched an assault whit all ships against this world wich is the homeworld and center of the civilization of those blue shiny aliens. And because theyr fleet in this star system wasn't strong enough and the rest of the fleet too far away, they surrendered without battle hoping to be able to spare lifes. And so the victorious invaders entered the atmosphere of the planet and that's the scene I'm gonna portrait. A moment where everything stand still, a moment of uncertainty and a moment of victory and power for the invaders. (amen) :)

It's weekend and I had much time, so I enjoied making this picture.
I had the idea that those aliens could be living in spheric flying houses, that would make possible a low orbit scene...
I still have to figure out something cool for those houses, they're too organic right now. And I'm not sure if I shoud go for such a low orbit scene or keep the old concept and add here and there some flying houses... I'd really like to hear some more opinions on that... thanks.

Hi therecoCoKNIght (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=11062) ! First let me thank you for your comment of my entry colur raw concept is already submited:-)Now to your work.I like your civilian ship concept wery much. Why don't you play little with it.Few examples:I thing that would be cool to make this ship burning and rushing towards wiever.Or change ship to bad guys version and turn it to more medusae form feasting on good guys planet/city/ships/anything you want.

Cool.... The spherical structures could be made of many spheres inside all connected in stands and cool bright lights and the outer bubble is to keep the atmosphere in. This would make them bigger and the attackers smaller. just a thought....

I did some googling and came up with the following:
earth diameter: 12800 km
height of the border where Troposphere und Stratosphere meet: 11 - 12km
My round flying house is supposed to have a diameter of 40m, so I made a setting in 3dsMAX with those numbers and came up with this picture. Blue is atmosphere which I want to make very cloudy / stormy. I hope it's allowed to use a simple 3d scene for reference...

Squibbit
10-31-2004, 08:29 AM
I don't see why it wouldn't be allowed , it's just a little help to
get things in proper perspective.
Kinda like using a photo of earth and moon as reference.

and well thought

its considered your own loss if you do. i did, but with somethings like that, where you want to get the scale correct, its invaluable.
plenty of other people have already used 3d props for reference, its no big deal.

I like your new idea, very nice :)
maybe you could turn down a bit the diameter of the planet (it's not the Earth but the planet of light after all) or increase the size of your houses, so that you can actually see the curvature of the planet, at the moment the horizon is flat (40m compared to 12800km...), it's just an idea, it is ok as it is now
another thing... the bad guy's spaceship will be black against a black background... I just wanted to point it to you so you are careful with that, it looks good in your previous sketch too
I like the idea of the stormy atmosphere and the organic-bubble-houses, and the way you have separated the image in "light VS dark","good VS evil"...

coCoKNIght
11-03-2004, 11:15 AM
@Mark: me too :wip:

@Fernando: Yeah, I'm not gonna stick to that render, it's just a guide. You're right I've got to be careful with those spaceships but even an entirely black one would be visible with such a starfield in the background. I think making the spaceships very dark has great dramatic possibilities/potential.

@all: thanks for your motivating replys. I don't know when the next update will be because things are not optimal for me right now, but I'm doing my best.

Wow, that's been a while since my last update... sorry guys!

Well this is a concept for some sort of space monster, or rather troposphere/stratosphere monster, whatever. I had those beasts in mind for a long time now, but didn't have time to draw it.

Right now the story's going somewhere completely different: I decided that the story wasn't space opera enough...

Well, my new idea is:
There's a sick professor that collects all intelligent species of the universe. He takes one specimen of each gender and puts them each in some sort of ball which is not much bigger than themselves and which keeps them alive forever. Those balls are then placed on a very low orbit around a planet which the doctor keeps only for this purpose. The balls take their energy from the many lightnings of the outer atmosphere of the planet. And the space monsters clean the transparent hull of the balls so that the doctor can always watch his collection.
Well, it appears that the professor has localized a new race: the humans, and has opened a gataway to earth. Curious like the humans are they send an expedition through the gateway, but on the other side the professor's luring with his ultra advanced spacecraft :-)

I hope you can imagine more or less what I've described, else just wait for the next sketch :-)

YeeWu
11-13-2004, 03:04 PM
I really like your idea of the balls being powered by atmospheric weather. The flying, cleaning creatures sounds reall neat too! I'd love to see a concept sketch of the underside of the creature (like, what kind of mouth it has and how it cleans).

Sounds like good stuff! Good luck :)

giza-di
11-13-2004, 03:10 PM
it's really interesting concept, but i fail to see any grandeur or 'galacrtic civ climax' on this one:shrug: with 70 days to go, i suppose spending some more time on the concept will pay off...

coCoKNIght
11-14-2004, 03:53 PM
YeeWu: Thank you and, I'll see what I can do :)

giza-di: I'm not planing on winning the contest, especially not haveing people like you around here :) but you're right and I'm too not happy yet with the idea, and of course it's also true that there's much time left... we will see, at the end I'll come up with something completely different. Anyway my goal is to finish this, to learn a lot and to have fun. (the only point I'm not sure to reach is the first one). Thanks for your input! I really apreciate it, and if you're wondering why I don't comment too much on your thread. I don't wanna tell you what you already know: that your pictures are terrific... :)

It really is not much epic, is it?
Well I guess then I'll have to come up with a new concept :D

elmasfeo
11-16-2004, 09:52 PM
To be honest, I liked more the first idea of the light planet being invaded by the dark bad guys, your new idea with the professor and all of that is much more original, but not very readable, or at least I don't know what's going on by simply looking to the image without reading your story... I'm not saying it's bad, maybe you could try to change the composition or something...

anyway, I hope you make your mind clear with the concepts, I'm curious to see how it finally develops, good luck! :bounce:

coCoKNIght
11-16-2004, 10:09 PM
You're right, you're right, and I AM going back to the first concept (more or less) but I really have trouble with the concept because so many people are making a giant battle and planetary bombardment and so on... I anyway prefer to make something more or less peaceful, or threatening but without massacre... but with 'epic' and 'iconic', 'grand civilisation' and 'pivotal moment' as instructions.......

.....I like Tommy's concept but he was first :)

So anyway what I'm saying is that I'm going back for the first concept but I'm still thinking of something different, maybe sommething cartoony (the last concept was also getting cartoony). We will see, but for now, I won't bore you with more crapy concept work :)

ebrowning
11-17-2004, 05:53 AM
In your quest to nail the concept, try and remember what it is that really excites you- it's probably something from when you were a kid. Personally I like junkyards and shipwrecks, so that's what I'm going with. It's really easy to overthink this and try to come up with the winning concept, and ultimately that can really kill your inspiration. Every one here is dealing with the same thing, so take your time and develop a concept that you can't wait to work on every day.

I think you have a great imagination!

coCoKNIght
11-24-2004, 02:45 PM
@ebrowning: Thanks for your advice!

Lately I've been thinking much about how to go on with this and I've found out that I don't like the concepts I have so far to continue with them.
I've got quiet a lot of ideas in my head but somehow none of them seem to convince me.
I've decided however to put these down as rough sketches, cause later I might want to combine some of the sketches to a concept I really like and want to go on with.

Of course you will, it just takes a lot of drive and motivation but you seem to have plenty of it as long as you focus. Something to keep in mind from viewing all of your concepts (save for "The Inhabitant") is that they seem to lack contrast, many of the colors are all the same light shade with little variation between light and dark, while this achieves a watercolory dreamlike effect, it also muddies the image and evokes the wrong feelings for something "space opera" I think. Though this could just be a side effect of the way you paint (everyone styles are so vastly different) a deep and rich contrast brings out details, and it's the details that help bring sci-fi to life.

I really hope you get this done, I too am a bit of alate bird, but I just found your forums yesterday ;)
