Latest Update: Final Image: The Rose of the Hidden One

Well, it's done. This is my final image.

My image is a personal interpretation of an excerpt of a poem called "The Message" by Fernando Pessoa.

This excerpt tells us about the return of a Portuguese King called D.Sebastião, who disappeared, on foggy day, during a great battle in 1578.
Because his body was never found, the Portuguese created some prophecies for his return.
The most famous prophecie tells us, that he will return, with his new spiritual army, in a same foggy day, of the 21 of December of 2012.
And since D. Sebastião - The Hidden One, was a knight from the ancient "Order of Christ", I've decided to represent his spiritual army like the Cross/Rose of that Order.

Here is that excerpt:

The Hidden One

What fertile symbol
Comes with the restless dawn?
On the Dead Cross of the World,
Life, which is the Rose.
What divine symbol
Brings the day already seen?
On the Cross, which is Destiny,
The Rose which is Christ.

What final symbol
Shows the sun already awakened?
On the dead and fatal Cross
The Rose of the Hidden One.

And now in portuguese:

O Encoberto

Que símbolo fecundo
Vem na aurora ansiosa?
Na Cruz Morta do Mundo
A Vida, que é a Rosa.

Que símbolo divino
Traz o dia já visto?
Na Cruz, que é o Destino,
A Rosa que é o Cristo.

Que símbolo final
Mostra o sol já desperto?
Na Cruz morta e fatal
A Rosa do Encoberto.

See you next time.

I'm going to write it now... wait :)

Estás a viver onde High?

Well, my story is based on a true masterpiece of Portuguese Literature by Fernando Pessoa.

Fernando Pessoa (1888 - 1935) was a famous Portuguese poet, one of the greatest in the Portuguese history. He wrote as if he was different poets. One of his most famous works, was a different and vivid adaptation of "The Lusiad", called "The Message" (A Mensagem).

"The Message" is seen as impressive by some critics for speaking of the Sebastianism (cult of D. Sebastião) and Portuguese prophecies, that were created and prophecized during the time of another great poet "Camoens".

The Portuguese irrationally wait the return of the dead king (D. Sebastião) on a foggy day - as the return of National Me (Eu Nacional) that will take Portugal, once more, to govern the so acclaimed "Fifth Empire".

My image will be a personal interpretation of that return.

That's it... for now.

This seems very interesting and original. it would be grand if you could pull out a great piece of iconic grand space opera art based on an original idea like that.
Truly interesting.

Hello, this is the excerpt of "The Message" by Fernando Pessoa, that I will try to illustrate:

The Hidden One

What fertile symbol
Comes with the restless dawn?
On the Dead Cross of the World,
Life, which is the Rose.
What divine symbol
Brings the day already seen?
On the Cross, which is Destiny,
The Rose which is Christ.

What final symbol
Shows the sun already awakened?
On the dead and fatal Cross
The Rose of the Hidden One.

And now in portuguese:

O Encoberto

Que símbolo fecundo
Vem na aurora ansiosa?
Na Cruz Morta do Mundo
A Vida, que é a Rosa.

Que símbolo divino
Traz o dia já visto?
Na Cruz, que é o Destino,
A Rosa que é o Cristo.

Que símbolo final

Na Cruz morta e fatal
A Rosa do Encoberto.

looking very cool - this is a v.original idea - don't change it, for anything - it's very cool - and grand space opera doesn't have to mean sci-fi - it's just how you interpret it - so original is cool.

I'm liking the images a lot - the rose thing ROCKS! and the bridge/sea is soo cool - it's amazingly realistic water... only slight quibble is the concrete base at the bottom of the supports, this is the only bit of the image that doesn't look as realistic.

The idea of this "wall" of water, is to show the power of the "Rose", with it's own gravity... but I'm still not happy about it!

I love the work you're doing. It's nice to see something with real personal and cultural meaning behind it! Don't switch to spaceships, you've got some beautiful work going. My only comment would be that the wave doesn't read very well as water, not quite sure how you'd go about changing that though, but never the less your work is stunning!

11-16-2004, 09:25 PM
Whoa... I haven't been following your thread properly  ... it really looks fantastic, complete with your particular semi-abstract style too, and a very bold choice of colours. The difference between the two last updates is pretty stunning.

Those discshaped object coming down from the hole in the sky (or if they are on their way towards it) introduce a rather busy component in the overall scene, I feel maybe there should be slightly less of them to avoid it turning into noise rather than an identifiable stream of objects... I guess there should still be lots of them, but maybe slightly fewer.

Overall it's a VERY appealing image that gets my imagination going

nuclearman
11-17-2004, 07:01 AM
Claudio, given what you're trying to do with the spiral effect in the sky, I thought you might find it interesting to "compare notes," so to speak, with the work of Richard "Doc" Baily:

www.imagesavant.com (http://www.imagesavant.com)

I realize you probably don't have access to the Spore rendering system, but perhaps a perusal of his ethereal renders will suggest a few additional options as you hone your image.

As with your Alienware entry, your are doing fascinating and inspirational work!

11-17-2004, 11:31 AM
Wow nuclearman, thank you very much for that link you sent me, it really is inspiring, I love it. So, you didn't liked my "Machine-flesh" entry, ahm? :) Just kidding!

Hello James, I know that it's not clear, for the mean time, but, those discshaped objects are supposed to be a mix between petals of a rose and a kind of spiritual agents of: The Order of Christ, a Portuguese Military Order from the Portuguese age of discovery.
And I agree with you... less is more :)
Thanks.

stevetwist
11-17-2004, 06:24 PM
Wow very impressive.

Only comment is that I thought when you said 'walls of water' you meant like a tornado stile thing being sucked up into the heart of the rose spiral thingy. But that was just what I had pictured in my mind.

The latest two images kick ass - there's some real movement in them, and they're really cool.

I do think though that it's appearing a little noisey (like James mentioned)... so maybe make the rose petals a little transparent, or remove a few of them, or maybe make the ones in the distance faded quite a bit - so that the eye doesn't try to focus on everything at once.

Anyway, looking cooler and cooler by the minute - a very original idea - I think it'll stand out from the crowd - a very promising piece (I can't wait to see this one finished and at a high resoution - kick a$$).

Hi.:buttrock:

I really like your work, your images are very good and the lights look great. I will give you an advice if it does not botter you: I like your inspiration, you know all this great idea about the poems, but this is a contest about an space opera. Do you really think that this image represents the objectives of this challenge?... If you cold find a way to interconect your poetry with the concept of the contest you will get an extraodinary image.

Hope this helps.

Snake Farlow. The rogue.

Good luck.

claudiojordao
11-20-2004, 05:38 PM
Yeah! Thanks SnakeFarlow, you know, that is the very BIG question that is swirling in my mind since I got this idea of the poem... where is the space scene?

Dam!

The problem is: Supposedly, my scene is taking place at a very special date, 21 of December 2012, which is the date of the return of D. Sebastião, so it says the prophecy.
Therefore, I can not have nothing too advanced in my scene, because, I think that we are not going to evolve very much in the 8 years that is left!

On the other hand, this might be also the solution, his return could be a kind of... vision of the future of mankind... or, the Fifth Empire, as is called on the poem.
And in this vision... well... I suppose that there could be a spaceship. Maybe one like in my first two posts in this thread... Hummmm!!!

Your post surely helped Snake Farlow!

Thanks.

What fertile symbol
Comes with the restless dawn?
On the Dead Cross of the World,
Life, which is the Rose.

What divine symbol
Brings the day already seen?
On the Cross, which is Destiny,
The Rose which is Christ.

What final symbol
Shows the sun already awakened?
On the dead and fatal Cross
The Rose of the Hidden One.

Hi there Cláudio!

No, you're not the only one... I really like the color, scale and depth of your images! Specially the "Rose Vessel" Design, truly misteryous and fit for a King that was all but forgotten...

Só uma perguntinha... o que é que aconteceu a Almada? :D

Your last concept looks great - but I have to agree with stevetwist. The first concept is stronger. As for being Space opera enough, I think it depends on how you see it. Isn't earth a part of space? It sure is strong enough connection for me.
Keep doing this wonderful images - they look like nothing else!

Thanks to you all guys, your comments are really making me think about the true meaning and the true message of my scene.

I don't want to move away from what the poem is all about. So, and because of that, I've decided to add more "power" to the "Cross", which also represents the "Rose" and at the same time the "Fifth Empire".

I think that this "spiritual" idea can only be represented as if it was some kind of alucination... or vision! Therefore, it must be something that is really there... but is not!
Just as my idea of representing it :)

Well, I hope you can help me to find a way to solve this mistery!

Rui-Padinha, I'm really glad you're in this challenge. Thanks for your comment!
Almada!!! yeah!... I could not find any references for me to model, or to texturize that side of the river "Tejo". I still don't know if it's going to be so visible as it is now... because supposedly this all scene is taking place in a foggy morning, but, if you hnow where to find any material!

Gunilla, ..."I think it depends on how you see it. Isn't earth a part of space? It sure is strong enough connection for me."... Eheheh, I like you!
Thanks for the support.

Hi there. :applause:

I am very glad that my coment could help you that much. Both images are great, the first and the last one, the only diference is that the image that you are working now fits more with the subject of the contest.
I really did not imagine you could rise an image like this. it has speed, strenth, composition, color, and has differents elements that symbolize and represents a poem, so I have to congratulate your efforts. Keep going that way and trust in your fellings. Maybe you could take a look of my work and tell me some advices.

Latest image is superb! I love the blurryness - it gives a load of motion to the piece, making it very active... which is cool!

It'd be sweet to see that big red cross reflected in the water also, but I guess you'll get to that later??

As for changing my mind... maan it hurt bad! (lol) Uhh, I still got a headache actually... nah, I'm fine! yay! And thanks for the support over my piece... I sure hope I can get it done in time (that's the biggest problem... the deadline). I should have an update over on my thread soon... I'm just modelling the lead male character at the moment.

Anyway, absolutely awesome! What more is there to say?

Olá Cláudio!

Nice going mate! I really love the feel and composition of your last pic... but when I was thinking about the actual site, I figured that some of the strongest images you can get of Almada and the bridge are actually by night!!!

So why not make it a night piece? You could surely benefit from using the Cross\sip as a light source, reflecting on the waters of the Tejo and lighting up it's surroundings... and you would get away with a fairly low poly version of Almada, because it's by night and you really can't see the southern shore that well... just concentrate on the lighting and the glow FX...

As for references I suggest you grab yourself a camera and take some pictures from Belém... you can then buid a low poly model and do whacky stuff with it, like building additional structures and try to figure out how how the cityscape will look a few years from now...

Anyway, hope this helps! Keep it up

Um abraço!

Please... can't someone fix that!!!

Glad you like that version Stevetwist, I would like you to see the new version, the one I cannot submit... maybe tomorrow!

Rui, that's a very good suggestion, but as I said back there :)

Having trouble uploading? That's to bad, I was really looking forward to see where you're going... I like yesterdays image. Almost as much as I can forget about the rose, but not quite :)
Perhaps you could add the rose into this one? Perhaps that could soften up the shape of the cross and make the image more rythmic. The foggy morning light in this one is just beautiful - can I borrow some?
Anyway, I'm sure your new image will be spectacular - looking forward and good luck with solving the technical issues

Superb!

I love the way the cross makes the viewer look down towards the seemingly tiny statue right on the horizon, and the bridge also guides the viewer in this direction.... a very clever composition.

I'm amazed at the 'rose' thing, from the renders of just the rose it doesn't look all that brilliant, but with all the glows added it looks so beautiful!

11-28-2004, 06:56 PM
Thanks Virtuoso, maybe I'll render more frames for you, now it's time to refine a few things!

Gunilla, yes... it is in fact my intention to represent an epic moment. And no, it's no church in the background :) it's a real monument in the city of Lisbon called "Cristo Rei - King Christ" which stand by the river Tejo, at the side of that bridge called "25 of April".

Thanks Stevetwist, I think I'm gonna follow your advise!

Hhssuu, thanks for the compliment... but what dont you understand exactly? Have you read the story? Maybe it helps :)

The story is based in a excerpt on a poem called "The Message" by Fernando Pessoa.
Basically it speaks of the return of a Portuguese King called D.Sebastião, who disappeared, on foggy day, during a great battle in 1578.
Because his body was never found, the Portuguese created some prophecies for his return.
The most famous prophecie tells us, that he will return in a same foggy day, of the 21 of December of 2012.

This image is a personal interpretation of that return.

Did it helped?

Claudio, it's really amazing to see the difference the lighting makes! The model was looking promising, but it wasn't until you got all the lighting effects in place that the image is raised to a whole different level, and earns the word "spectacular." It's both truly iconic, and suggestive of the SF theme in a way that's quite original. If this were a movie poster, I'd sure as heck want to see the film! Two thumbs up!

Olá Cláudio!

Wooha! Great stuff mate! You truly have achieved an original and mystical feel...

I do have a few crits, however... the ship is taking too more of the picture frame imho, it is clearly the most important piece in your image, but by almost filling the frame with it you are loosing some of the other elements, namely the bridge imho...

The statue looming trough the arch of the cross really works tough, but I think you could alter the composition so that the cross\ship would be a bit smaller and give the bridge more visibility, as well as allow the whole image to "breathe"... it's getting tight in there  !

I also think you could create addittional small light patterns on the ship's hull for extra detail...

Take care mate, and congrats once again

Olá Cláudio.

I've been watching some of your posts and I think that you have a genuine and original idea.

However I must agree with Rui when he says that:

the ship is taking too more of the picture frame imho, it is clearly the most important piece in your image, but by almost filling the frame with it you are loosing some of the other elements, namely the bridge imho...

The statue looming trough the arch of the cross really works tough, but I think you could alter the composition so that the cross\ship would be a bit smaller and give the bridge more visibility, as well as allow the whole image to "breathe"... it's getting tight in there  !It seems like that you have put some foggy noise to hide the detail on the ship.

Maybe you could try to create some skyline to give some "realistic" expression to the picture whitout taking much of the magical feeling. And the water is really beautiful!

Hello Nomad, thank you for your comment!
This "symbol" which represents "The Order of Christ", is the main character of the scene. It is composed by thousands of elements that, in this instance, begin spreading to the world.
So, I cant spread then too much, or we'll lose the perception of the Cross.
I might move one or other element, but I think that this is pretty much the final configuration.

Thank you very much BartokDesign. Valeu!

Nuclearman, you know, I'm thinking very seriously in make a movie about this. Who knows! Thanks.

for the textures... sure, it's better and we see better JC...

For the turbulence... I think it's too much lite... To see and understand the power... some great waves, with sorts of vapors will be more impressive... as the lighting push the water... lights are hot, and night waters are cold, and that create, vapor, smoke with the turbulence... you see ?

Gunilla
12-01-2004, 06:39 AM
I think this last render is even better than the previous! The brightening of the statue ( I know what it is now :) ) did a lot. I second the idea of making this into an animation - to start with the empty sea at dawn and see the cross grow closer and then suddenly - be inside the structure ... whoa! Would that be stunning or what?
Lemogs suggestions on great waves is good - like as the force is pushing the water aside... when is the next update? :bounce:

Very intense, very vibrant, and it should be,the message is a strong one,and the symbol should be as well.I think this is the perfect way of getting this message across Claudio..........I like the scope and range, and the drama is on a high level.......I was thinking that "Possibly" now just possibly ;) you could have the sea underneath the great object be calm, very still,a calm passive sea, this could show even more so the power of your object, how it controls all.....And just beyond the objects shadow or boundaries the sea could be much more wild, very chaotic........Ok,just a thought......very interesting, out of the box thinking, real nice going Claudio, keep at it,it's coming along real well............:arteest:

Cláaaudio!!!

Super work mate, I really, really love your last entry... the water loks "that" much better with the added turbulence and the trees on the "Almada" side really work... simple but effective .

I also like the textures in the cross, mainly in the lit areas, but I find the red area ones a bit blurred or blotched...mmm... maybe it's just me...

But your image is really coming together beautifully, and it has a grand sense of mystique and awe... however, in my opinion, the cross is still too big! I really think you could scale it a bit down, so you could have a clear silhouette of the bridge and a liitle more sky on the top portion...

And I also agree with Joana when she says that it's missing a more defined skyline... it doesn't have to have clouds or patches of clear sky, the fog works great, but you shoud consider some type of gradient effect on it, it's too homogenous as it is imho... and perhaps just a feeew little cloud mass here and there... just to break it up a little...

Otherwise I am very impressed! Keep it up mate! :bounce:

Um abraço

Hello guys, I'm sorry for not being able to post any updates in the last days, but I've been kind of busy with some other projects.
However I feel I must thank you for your great suggestions and support:

Lemog, I appreciate very much your critic about the turbulence, I totally agree with that... it really makes sence! However, and taking in consideration the excelent suggestion of Virtuoso:
"... you could have the sea underneath the great object be calm, very still,a calm passive sea, this could show even more so the power of your object, how it controls all.....And just beyond the objects shadow or boundaries the sea could be much more wild, very chaotic...".
I'm kind of undecided about the intensity of that turbulence! I have to think a bit more about that! Thank you very much.

Gunilla, I'm really glad you like the idea of making a movie about this, I'm surely going to need all the support for it because this scene is only 1% of the all idea :)
Maybe I can have the movie finished before D.Sebastião really returns! :) Thanks friend.

Virtuoso, thank you very much man... great suggestion, just great!

overcontrast, I like the simplicty of those blocks, but you are problably right:
"... some blocks of the main subject seems too hard edged.... it makes it look low poly...".
Yeah... I'm still playing around with some textures that might add some details to those blocks, maybe you could suggest something then! Thanks mate.

Rui, I'm glad you liked my solution for Almada :)
I want to keep the size of the cross, however I've made a little change to it... I've scaled down all of those elements 80% their size... and I think it works!
I'll be waiting for your feed back. Obrigado amigo.

Hey Cláudioooo!

Great entry mate! Your finest to date imho... I just love the reworked cross design!!! Don't tweak it more or you'll spoil it

Ok, now the crits... I think you overused the fog effect, you can barely see the "Almada" side, and the Christ statue seems like it's floating on air... I'd suggest that you create a more dense fog close to the water, becoming thiner along the slope so that you'll have a more defined landmass without loosing the "mistyc" feel...

I also think the lens flares on the croos look too sharp and the light effect on the bridge has too much contrast...

And you could also vary the scale of the foam noise on the waves... mix 2 or 3 different scales for that "chaotic" natural flavour...

Other than that I really think it's a powerful and stylish image! Congratulations... I mean it!!!:applause: :applause: :applause:

Um abraço!

Looking really really awesome! Stunning! Only crit is the statue, I have to agree with Rui_Padinha, it does look like it's floating in mid air - I think either the landscape is too foggy, or the statue is too brightly lit - not sure.

The rest is just amazing though - the cross is really great!

Globaly... that's perfect for me... and I like so much... all !

just one detail seem for me a bit worse... it's the gate... it seem a little as a toy... I don't know exactly what you must do, but now, this detail appear to me more visible...
Maybe because it was less defromed by th focal than the rest...

But it's yet a great artwork... I love in first the originality and the idea... I vote

Hello. Thanks a lot for all your comments and critics guys, you are really the best!
I've been very very busy with some other things... however, I think that this "time-out" gave me the chance to think a bit better in the structure of my image. I hope you like it!

Hi claudio_jordao

Your image is progressing nicely, its impressive my only comment is that the large
crucifix might overshadow the complete image at the end,
its a good idea to divide the composition in proportion.

all the best Paul Patina!

And for the picture... I prefer with less fog... cause they're less contrats in the lower part of your composition... it's more confuse for me... but what you decide, your work is anyway great :arteest:

Hey Cláudio!

Great stuff mate! I've been absent for a while now, but I always kept an eye on your thread and I sure wasn't disappointed

I love the composition and the fog effect on the river bank... you have achieved the perfect balance between the visible and the suggested...

My only crits are: your light source is still creating very harsh shadows on the bridge upper structures, and the river could use some smaller wave detail... also imho you could tint the water a slight blue whithin your pallete, just to differenciate it from the mist...

Other than that it's with great joy that I can say that your entry is now among my very favourites!!! :applause:

Take care mate!

Claudio......Your wild and imaginative piece has come along as I am sure you intended....Things have shaped up in this last update quite well........I can only suggest you give the water a more blue tint,a better contrast from the mist as Rui_Padinha suggested,it was my first thought as well..........As well as Lemog's suggestion of less fog,a slight touch less, this way your mood will be maintained.......Your right there with what you wanted, just some minor tweaks,,,,,,not like me with major work ahead of me.....;)

......Ok give this the last tweaks, looking very powerful your image, your icon........Well done Claudio, really unique, all the best to you........:arteest:

Hey - well done! I think it looks terrific - small detail is that I really miss some of the saturated warm red from the previous one. I think it gave the scene more of a intense dramatic feel. New sea texture is great

Well, it's done. This is my final image.

My image is a personal interpretation of an excerpt of a poem called "The Message" by Fernando Pessoa.

This excerpt tells us about the return of a Portuguese King called D.Sebastião, who disappeared, on a foggy day, during a great battle in 1578.
Because his body was never found, the Portuguese created some prophecies for his return.
The most famous prophecie tells us, that he will return, with his new spiritual army, in a same foggy day, of the 21 of December of 2012.
And since D. Sebastião - The Hidden One, was a knight from the ancient "Order of Christ", I've decided to represent his spiritual army like the Cross/Rose of that Order.

Here is that excerpt:

The Hidden One

What fertile symbol
Comes with the restless dawn?
On the Dead Cross of the World,
Life, which is the Rose.
What divine symbol
Brings the day already seen?
On the Cross, which is Destiny,
The Rose which is Christ.

What final symbol
Shows the sun already awakened?
On the dead and fatal Cross
The Rose of the Hidden One.

And now in portuguese:

O Encoberto

Que símbolo fecundo
Vem na aurora ansiosa?
Na Cruz Morta do Mundo
A Vida, que é a Rosa.

Que símbolo divino
Traz o dia já visto?
Na Cruz, que é o Destino,
A Rosa que é o Cristo.

Que símbolo final
Mostra o sol já desperto?
Na Cruz morta e fatal
A Rosa do Encoberto.

Impressive work Claudio.
I imagine this huge ship coming slowly, slowly from the mist. Bigger and bigger, with no sound at all. Great! Great work!
And using "The Hidden One" poem as source of inspiration is a nice and sensitive approach.

Hello PROctavian, if the objective of this challenge was to animate the whole scene... it will be just like you imagine it :)
I intent to make a movie about "The Message"... and this scene, the one that speaks about the "Hidden One", it's only 5% of the whole story... so, I've got very much work to do. And another thing is that, I've changed a bit my vision of this scene to better fills the objective of the challenge! Spaceships is not what I have in mind. Thank you very much for coming.

Oi RRobles, tudo bom? Não sou Brasileiro, sou Português :) mas é quase a mesma coisa não é? Do you know BartokDesign? Ele é q é brasileiro :) and is work is very good!
I'm very glad you came! Thanks.

I am happy that I was selected. But I have to say that there were so many great artists that couldn't get the result they expected although they deserved it .Also it was so likely that those who got the award couldn't be successful at all;I mean it is a matter of taste and other factors. Therefore,we shouldn't take much pride in our acheivements nor be dissappointed with the result.
See you all in other challenges and good luck!.
