Hi all! Finally found some time to get started. Doesn't sound too good eh :) Hope things will go better when examinations are over. Bad time to start a challenge :0
these are just some doodles to get the creative juices flowing. Experimenting with composition and colors. Please tell me what you think. ANything is welcome :)

I combined some of the idea's I had into this image. I thought it turned out ok, so I was wondering what you folks thought of it.
I like wide pictures, but it turned out a little too wide. I was thinking I could add some space to the bottom and put some small people on that road to give the viewer an idea of the size of things.

Eric - I like the feel of this last one, but I need to see some people's faces, reactions in order to get pulled into the piece. I think you may need some folks in the foreground to help us feel their plight. Maybe they are some people who were trying to come rescue the town, but got there too late?

Hi Garma guess youre struggling and needing for help? huh? :)
Anyway im not that good myself to be giving any really usefull tips, but here is my attempt.
Just concentrate on the city, road leading to the city and spacecrafts. Other detail you can invent by looking at pictures of mountain ranges.
I think youre on the right track. Just hope you bring out more stuff.
Keep thinking of scale. Good lighting will bring in the realism needed.

robinayles, you're definately right. However I'm not sure how to accomplish that without making it overloaded with too much going on, making the image look too busy. I'm currently trying out some new concepts and compositions
Falcor, that's another problem I was thinkin about: scale. This lighting is definately not final I want it to be a lot more dramatic.
I think this concept is a little too standard, not standing up from the crowd.

these are all 10 min sketches, just to get some idea's across. Only in the bottom right one I thought of some sort of setting. It sort of evolved from the others.

worked that last sketch out into a coloring. I still didn't solve that foreground problem completely. However this one gives me more opportunities
everyone probably goes for uber high tech stuff, this civilisation is wood only, being under attack by some aliens.

I like the wooden concept, great idea. The layering with distance that you have going on is quite interesting, I would like to see more.

nice sketches and a the wood-civilisation is a good idea, garma. i like the last sketch, interesting point of view, kind of looking through a window...

Hey Garma, really like that last sketch.
Also like that wood concept of yours. Hey, why not add steam-technology to the wood.
Wooden ships powered by steam, that would look great.

thanks folks :) the steam idea is a great one, I''ll see what I can do with that. I don't like the composition yet, I'm struggling with that. Things are too orthogonal to the viewing direction, I want something more of a 1 or 2 points perspective.

YES! I like the latest sketch too. As for POV, maybe you could rotate those people on the left a little closer into the foreground and maybe that would place it a little more on the diagonal.
I don't know if that translates well or makes sense. But it would be like this...leave all the things on the right side in place, but pivot the images on the left side toward the viewer.
so that the POV is more of a diagonal with the closer things on the left and leading the eye up toward the right with the background buildings on that side further away.

Hey, Garma! I just noticed your thread and like what you have going. I like your low-tech wood city, but consider this angle:
The city on the mountain doesn't have easy access to the forest area for building materials. The foreground that the ships are passing through looks like a forest. What if these are two warring civilizations, one based on the stone of the mountain (and maybe metal from the mines), the other based on the wood from the forests? The forest people could build crude flying machines with wood poles lashed together, etc. The mountain people could have some sort of metal catapult that throws stones. Just an idea that popped into my head. Keep up the good work!
