Nice start. Do you have some concept sketches at all? It would be helpful to know where you're going with this. Well good luck to you, and keep up the good work!

robots looking good, waiting for details and a sketch of the concept. That will probably be very important, what if you spend all this time modeling a robot and it doesn't work in the concept illustrations? Anyway, good luck.

wow very nice start
is the final model going to be smoothed?

turbinea
10-22-2004, 10:15 AM
THX Hie Spike, there is no concept for this bot yet, and i'm not sure if any will show up because i imagined it "on the fly". I'm now focusing on basic setup of scene so hopefuly i could avoid problems, thanx for hint.

Dark-elf2, it won't be smoothed if you mean meshsmooth used in boxmodeling. I plan use smoothing groups only, so i can achieve machinery feel from that character. Chest and thigh are smoothed that way, it is still without any detail but you see what i mean. There'll be another character (woman to be exact) and there i want use boxmodeling (and smoothinghttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif).

Interesting modeling style, almost looks like you're chipping away bits and pieces like working from stone.

Model is looking good - can't wait to see a concept sketch and find out what this guys all about! ;)

10-22-2004, 10:47 AM
turbinea, before you polish the character be sure what your scene will look like. Is that bot is going to be on foreground? Is it really going to be on the picture? I mean, first think hardly about the scene scetch and then go to the details once you are satisfied with the composition as such.
That is my opinion. I also did the way you're doing now but then come lot of questions how to organize the scene nice way. You can discard my opinion if that bot is going to be for sure the main character of your scene.
And good luck!

Hello guys, basic setup of scene is finally copmpleted and now you can see this character will be defintely on foreground (silvergreen figures). Also did small progress on Bot, all parts are smoothed now, next step are details. Background needs lot of work but you can see what I want to accomplish enviromentaly speaking. What you can't see there is heavy firefight between silvergreens and small Dots and Tanks and Planes in Distance. What do you think?

one thing.. why didnt you fixed the UV map before you added all the details?
that would be much easier.

turbinea
11-01-2004, 01:39 PM
PaulGfx you are right about UVs, but this bot was made as improvisation mostly (3ds max), so there wasn't any preparations or planing for this model. It is something like I'm buying some time to think about scene and story. Just doing model i'm sure it fits there. I know roughly what it have to be, but want to find best composition for this.

i really like your robot

why are you building your characters in generic poses.

since this is a still, would it not be wiser to model the characters in the possition they will be seen in

not only would you be able to achieve a nicer feel for the deformations but you wouldnt waste so much time modelling details that wont be seen....

unless of course you are going to have multiples of the same character and you need to skin em

turbinea
11-09-2004, 09:11 PM
victor throe, i agree with you it is wiser, but on the other side I plan to use multiple instancies of that robot in various poses so it needs biped or something. And it is my habit from creating game content.

victor throe
11-09-2004, 10:11 PM

and the same for the other character?

turbinea
11-09-2004, 10:25 PM
i plan to show female character from front, maybe frontright :), so there is no need for details on back. i couldn't resist to do some details on her ass and legs  but i keep it simple. And still need to do rigging because i'm not sure about her pose.

thanx Cipher, you can see enviroment sketch here (http://www.cgtalk.com/showpost.php?p=1664771&postcount=11) . these characters are just placeholders for models. Grey are bots and red is female character i work on just now. i need to model guns for them before i move to enviroment modeling.

nasty !!!

I think she wouldn`t be so clean if she was wearing that rusty/used armour ... otherwise - very good texturing job

... also I`d like to see the texture or a screenshot of that armour`s mapping ... I`m really curious how you mapped such a complex object ...

hectic, here is shot of uv's and bump map. creating uv for this armor was really nightmare because of its complexity, otherwise nothing new here. what was new to me i had to consider max's smoothing "feature" - if i leave some uvs disconnected it creates texture artifacts on smoothed faces. this is why is most of it as one piece except of back, wing and collar. if i could arrange them as i wanted to it would take much less space.

Hello! Her textures are perfect. But I don't like everything about this tall guy:) ... I think that it should have some different colors. Maybe leave the light gold, and change darker one to some dark silver.... just thinking... but I think that you should do some tests with different colors. And I wouldn't change speculars and glossiness... for me they are good:thumbsup: If you're not sure about them, increase a little bit speculars...

I would be careful with the way you setup the light here because the textures in the bots are kind of (plane) so you would need to show the wonderful modeling with a lot of contrast to make the scene interesting. With those bots in first plane of the composition I think it would be very important not to lose the detail that you modeled so well.

We work in a very similar way because I don't use reference pictures to make my models, most of the time i make them like sculpting.

My best wishes for you.

I have to agree with monsitj , you got great modeling and texturing skill. There is an Unreal meets Halo atmosphere to it, nice. One critc tho, the scene does seem a bit crowded, I feel like they are shooting at their teammates :P

Thanx guys for your useful comments! I always had in mind that robots are standing on some hill above attacking army, but didn't realized that I'm only one person who actually can see it. Here si updated version where few robots left the scene and whole scenario is hopefuly easier to read.

Hi Turbinea, great modeliling and texturing. The girl looks really cool to me.

Sorry, i don't see the hill. I see a scene located on a corner of a spaceship passage conducting to the main deck.
There are enemies on the right that we don't see and other enemies in the background coming up along some kind of bridge? So the bots are trying to protect the girl...maybe 2-3 bots firing to the right and the others firing straight to the background, with the girl trying to hide between some architetural element in a dramatical pose like she's full of anger and fear?

turbinea
12-18-2004, 04:28 PM
Thanx Ago-stino for comment. I'm sorry if i confused you, i said hill but what i really meant was some higher point where they made a stand. There also some missing elements like additional soldiers climbing on that stand (and being shot by robots). Girl is protected by these bots but i want her in some commanding position (pointing on some target or so). It is hard to explain what i want to put there, maybe next update will clear up something.

I really like the way the lighting is, but it takes away detail from the rest of the scene. It also makes viewing some elements a dificalt task, trying to make them out through the lighting.

Hi turbinea]

I wish I was at the lighting stage now, It has a heavy theme, but I love the epic feel to it
a powerful war, I liked your first renders though, I think it might be important to seperate the characters in the foreground to highlight them more.
only my opinion, and to see more of the space and planets in the background, to feel the invasion coming,

nice 3d work!

hello! well, i saw you rendering and it is very good, but i think you have a little problem, and the same happens with me: we have so many elements, and we like them all! and then we want them to be visible in the final rendering, but the problem here i think is that it looks a little overcrowded, so i guess you have to work harder on the lighting, first light your characters, and let the bg be darker, i dont know about the big light in the bg, try to place the planets there, and bring more attention to the characters..

well that`s what i think, but its up to you..
good luck!!

thanx guys for advice, i'll fix that lightning (i hope) and remove some elements from scene.

Hi turbinea

Thanks for reply, Its not textured yet, and its not a real gun only a prop in the final image,
but I understand what your saying, anway Im hoping It all comes together in the final picture!
theres a certain look Im trying to achieve with the final print.

all the best

Patina!

i like your gun design but i see some problem with texture. gun apears to me like carved from one piece of metal, it isn't convincing. weapons are asembled from parts and that parts should be visible on texture - seams and stuff. anyway, design looks promising so - good luck.

No nazdar SLOVANE!!!, som si nevsimol ze tu ficis. Ale som rad, pretoze ti to zatial ide velmi dobre.
Mam par poznamok, snad pomozu.

1.Celkovo je to zatial nejake velmi komplikovane, vela veci sa deje a oko na prvy pohlad nevie co si ma vsimat.
2. Skus viac zvyraznit postavicky aby sa dokazalo rozlisit kde ktora zacina a konci, napriklad trochu iny otien armoru, faberne znacky na nich atd.

Hi,
I discover your image, which control 3d, environment is super and
the composition well considering, just to suggest you adding the solid
drop shadow which misses because the robots make a little assemblies
and on the fire of the weapons not to be so white, perhaps but you did
not finish yet, and good luck for the continuation.

Matroskin
01-07-2005, 07:31 PM
Fascinating! Really complex composition.
But considering it there is some things I want to suggest. Female character seems to be TOO static. As for me she could give commands with strong expression and screaming (she is their commander isn't she? :)
Once I've seen an illustration from Warhummer episodes which I'd call "last man standing" where soldiers were covering their commander who was holding the flag.
Your spacemarines also could cover her more tight (some are standing - closer to "center";others sitting/lying - in "outer radius"). Despite they are bots I think they should also express more motion/emotion - fear, heroic defence, lost hope, self sacrifising in a name of somethig great...bla-bla-bla (we can imagine that they have extraordinary AI so they could be treated like being alive :).
Actually I've not read all the commets but I hope mine are not dublicates of previous ones.
Good creations!

------end of regional broadcast------------------

> Tranchefeux thanx for suggestion, shadow (and som light) may be the way to separate bots from enviroment. these shotsfires aren't finished so i consider your suggestion.

>Deryk, warhammer is my strong source of inspiration in this challenge. It is true Epic universe. Others may be more scifi, original or more whatever but w40k is most epic i ever seen. Female character is waiting for correct rig and then i pose her (finally). She is in fact reason of that explosion so i want her show that, i mean something like she is casting a spell. In my mind, I have short story about String Empire and Last StarBurner, and that helps me to tell this pic. I tried to pack robots closer but there was problem with reading what parts belongs to who, but some expressins throgh poses may work.

Thanx guys for comments you helped me a lot!

added more enemies, fire and bullettraces. while it is not final rendering i think this counts as posteffects and composting (which should be done AFTER final rendering). i want to add planets and ships, and mechs and fix few things i see and few i don't. empty shells are done in photoshop and will be replaced with serious geometry. but not today. i'm dead. really. byee

Pose of the girl does not fit the rest - is very static and boring. Something more dynamic would be better. I guess she is the leader of that robot squad, maybe make her look like she's ordering them to attack or at least give her some weapon to fire. Other thing, some orange rim light coming from the gunfire could nicely separate at least the few foreground robots.

01-11-2005, 08:54 PM
Now this is a lot of detail, looks great. Kinda reminds me of some of the older Heavy Metal mag covers. Could probably loose the four blobby ship things sitting above the pile of troopers, wouldn't even notice they were gone and would help with the eye flow.

here is scene with updated lightning, girl has new pose and some raybeams. i'm not completely sure about these raybeams. maybe problem is that pose doesn't reflect using that beams properly. i fix it tommorow, after short collapse (formerly known as sleep). in meantime you could tell me about presence of these beams. should i keep it or remove it and put there something else instead?

Hadn't looked in on this for a wee bit and I'm glad to see you've toned down the background and taken some elements out, so please don't go adding any more ships, planets, etc :) - the foreground grabs your attention much better now without the eye wandering.

I agree about the girl, she is a bit unconcerned looking, maybe if you turn her head and tilt it a little so she is more in profile and looks like she is looking down her arm and focusing on her firing it might giver her more agression?

Looking good though, hope these comments help you and good luck :)

love the modeling and concept. However, it's difficult to visually separate the soldiers. They kind of all blend together. Your composition should be very strong, even if you squint. (The more traditional rule is that your character compositions should work if seen only in profile.)

Anyhow, one way to fix this might be to use photoshop to slightly alter the colors of each soldier. That way you have a better chance at visually separating them.

thanx for comments and heplful hints. here is next update: girl has hair now and is looking down at enemies (yes mistermac, it was heplful, thanx). bots are more separated by lightning. emonimo, unfortunately that sunlight stays as it is now, i'm sorry but it has to be that way. less light means more contrast background and therefore less focus on front group.

cgkrusty
01-14-2005, 12:54 AM
That's feeling a lot better. You're getting more separation of the chracters and your lighting is working really well now. I love the addition of magical powers to the female character, helps to pull her out as well.
