Sketch #1:
On the right side of the image you can see a bunch of humans who have landed on a just discovered alien planet and are checking out the area. The humans stand on plane land, not to much trees etc. On the left side you can see a little girl holding the hand of her grandpa. She's pointing to the human that's curiously looking through the bushes.
What I have in mind is a troup of humans with space-craft vessels on the right side. On the left side you can see a peacefull alien village living in the beautifull nature of that planet. In the middle you'll see the curious man looking trough the bushes.
Sketch #2:
This is my current favorite. What you see is a huge throne room. You can see the king and a lot of servents, wiseman, guards standing in the room. You have this beautifull big window in the back, it's curved. Trough this window you can see the beautifull evirment the palace is build in. Some flying aircrafts, moons, stars, the sky, you get the picture. 2 man (not shown) bring in the human explorer and everyone aims his attantion to this strange looking fellow.
Sketch #3:
Here you see again a human explorer, who has just arrived in a city in an alian planet. He's totally shocked by the advanced minds of the population. All the fold around him are curiously staring at him.
Note:
Just to be sure you get this, it's the concept. Sorry for the super quickly drawn images, but I wanted to capture the image in my head as good as possible. I'd also like some oppinions on the scenes before I really start to put hours of work in one image. All the characters are way basic and you cant' see the difference between alian and human. In the next post I'll show some of the Alian concepts
The overall idea of my iconic image is the first historical contact between the 2 planets, the first bond. I don't want any big fighting scenes, but I want you to be just as impresed with the culture and people living there as the explorer is. A peace full image full of new things and curiousity, not full of war and destruction.

Second update
I've drawn a few concepts here. I've got a possible king (lower-right corner) and a possible wise man (upper-left corner) The characters in the lower left corner are just population, overall sketches and ideas. The one on the upper-right, I've got no idea, I guess it could be a guard, I love it anyway :D

woohoo... ncie stuff... now ur the second person who got idea of a peaceful image (1st one was myself but i droped the idea and that leaves only u) and nice alien skatches.. i loved the lower left alien picture, neat hand pose.... now i sud like to suggest u that if u want the alien to sho in ur scene, b sure to put resemblences in them, making one being look like a gorilla and other like a penguin isnt such a good idea... we human do look different but u can tell by lookin at a man and know its a human... i hope u know what i mean... anyways best of luck dear buddy

looks good so far. Looking at your concept images, gave me an idea about a scene depicting a firste contact type of scenario. Kind of like an official meeting between races with all sorts of pomp and circumstance. Good luck to ya:thumbsup:

New character update. I'm trying to go for roughly the same look on all figures. All the alian creatures will have the moustace tenticle things, the characteristic brows and the cool ears and the flat head + wrinkles and big chin :p
The guardians look different though, they're more skinny, muscled etc, differend race if you will.
Please tell me what you think of the babes. I like the few on the bottom best :D
EDIT: IF YOU CLICK ON THE IMAGE YOU'LL GET A HIGHER RESS ;)

Questions and comments:
All thanks for the comments!
@3doid, I'm going to give them all the same characteristics, they'll show some resamblemts. In my next update I'll tell some more about the story of my unniverse, there you'll also get some character and classes description ;)
Yeah, I like the peacfull stuff. I think it might even be original to not have war things, but just a peacefull and impressive image (I hope it will be impressive)
@3db2, thanks, I hope it will be as cool as I got it in my head, more about the explorer in the next update ^.^
@percydaman, Thanks, glad you like it and it inspires you
@pddaugusto, thanks mate!
Some more info:
I've gone for the second sketch. I liked that one best. I'm currently messing with the possibilities and composition ideas. I think I'll make a cozy room with a big window. In the window you can see the city, airships, all I saidin the last post. You'll see the king playing some kind of hyper-modern chess game with a wise-man. The guardian will bring in the explorer and everyone will look up from what they're doing.
-The rest of the scene: I'll probably have some sort of sitting area on the left or right side of the image where kids are sitting playing with a dragon :D
-I'm also gonna set up some other characters.
-Also exploring the possibility or multople floors
next update:
-Some more on the underlying story and concept
-way more detailed sketch for the scene
-probably some architectual things, chess game, stairs
-wiseman and king character
Tell me what you think :D
I like the concept number one :)
Can you sketch "more detailed" the little girl expression?
thanks and cheers!

Small little update tonight. Sketched out the king character, tried out some different clothing. I went for a lot of drapery kind of cloths with an egyptian look. Upper body is quite final, the lowerbody around the leg is still WIP. Don't really know what kinda shoes I'm gonna give him, or whether I'll give him shoes or not. Feel free to comment ;)

Promised some more updates, but I failed :D I have done the set all over again, still a lot like the original concept, but quite different. It looks much better. Still very WIP that's why there isn't a picture. I've also tried to get into the wiseman character, but I ran into a little creative-mind-block O_o It sucks, I will work on it some more over the weekend and you can expect the scenery sketch (in water color!) and the wise-man concept by sunday (I love making this schedual thing, that whay I feel bad if I didn't make it :D (which helps me trough the time limit)) I think I just might start modeling the king, I'm pretty happy with the head and the upperbody, so I can do quite a lot of modeling. It's also a good distraction from all the concept design, so I can load up a bit more
I'll get into the concept tooo. I just attempted to write down a few lines about it. It's a rather simpel concept, but since I've got like 4 to 5 characters in it, it's going to get a bit more complicated. I'll see what I can do and work on the details, fantasies a bit and write it down for y'all. Really want to get a good strong concept story so :D
-shiroii
p.s sorry for the too big image ^.^ Looked quite good in Photoshop :p
Virtuoso, thanks man! I'll be sure to get a couple of detailed characters. Feeling quite good about the concepts and they'll be tons of fun to modle, so expect some detail
Hey, really nice concepts and lovely characters!!
Looking forward for more...

I like that your idea is character based. In the end it's the story of the characters, not necessarily the environment that counts. Although, I guess setting is pretty vital to a space opera. Otherwise it's just an opera. . . and you'd have people singin'. . . real different. . . anyway, lookin' good thus far.

:D Thanks all!
@ EmpY, Thanks man! Glad you like it ^_^
@ Steen, Correct! I really like the idea of using characters. It can add extra emotion and value to the picture, besides color, composition etc. The envirment will be pretty much space like. I'm working on quite a good scene at the moment, got some really sweet ideas and I'm making a sketch of it, which I'll color. (Too bad I havn't got my wacom yet ^.^ ) Anyhow, you will feel you're in space or on another planet.
@ markovicd, thanks! It will be a bit cartoony yes. I'll try too render, model and texture the best I can, but it will be stylised for sure, but believable I hope :p
@ madshooter,Thanks man, you will see more, much more :D
@ DimitrisLiatsos, I'm really gonna put a lot of time into the chess game, because it will be soooo much fun. Don't worry, I'll come up with something really really cool (I hope :D) Thanks for the support!

its looking good... but i feel like i should remind u of the theme of this challange.... the scene u'll create gotta b of epic proportion, iconic and must show a turning point in a advanced space civilization.... i think making it funny or too peaceful is not a good idea... just a suggestion...
anyways good job on teh new aliens, i c teh resemblences now... keep it up bud

@tsunami4you, Of course everything must have to do with destruction, death and explosions. For thousands of years people are looking up at the sky wondering whether there are alians or not, people claiming they saw a U.F.O, claiming they were kidnapped by alians and used for all sorts of tests, at last there is the first human being to actually contact the king of an alian species and you call it not epic?
That is what I picture here, the first contact of humans with alians. Good chance the alians are just as intrested in us and we are in them and would love to have some peacefull treaty and do busniss with these strange creatures called humans, and they probably will. These creatures are very curious and peacfull. They do not like violence, they rather use there time usefull and will try to develop new techniques or new invent new things. They're a kind of progress, they don't want to stand still, but develop things and work on intelligence or play the national game (yes! the game of the king :p) rather then war. But more on this later, this is just a small part of the description, it's almost ready, finish it tonight! (refilled my creative powers, work work!) :wip:
no offence meant, just defending my work :D
@Voutlooz, Thanks you my dear Dutch friend. I've already cought a few glimpses of your thread too. I havn't posted anything yet, but it does look really intresting
@3doid, Thanks man! I'll think it will fit in and else I will make it fit in. One thing I don't get, a lot of people are saying it is funny. It might not be war and destruction, but more of a happy peacfull happening. Can't recall putting any real humor in it. Did I miss something? :curious:
Maybe I got the theme wrong. If you look at mr glass's work (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=179246) He's getting some sort of peace agreement too, only then with 2 alians species, kind of the same, right? There will be spaceships, stars and planets in the image, you just havn't seen them yet. Be sure to check out my next update of the scenery concept it will fill all your beautifull space scenery needs. Feel free to warn me about not staying inside of the theme. Thanks for all the comments!

Like your way of thinking [about the peace and not making another star-destroyer thing]. Although I thik that if you still hang to your throne room idea, you'll need to give it a twist, you know bit more drama and motion.
True, I like your way of thinking "peace instead of a dramatic war" I can relate to this :)
I like the idea of having the humans and the aliens in a peaceful enviroament, where you can add all sort of alien-like geometry :D
I don't think your work is "funny" I think is more like "peaceful'
-Cheers!

Don't worry, Shiroii, "first contact" is an epic idea: worked for Arthur C Clarke and Stanley Kubrick and it turned out to be a pretty good concept for the last decent Star Trek flick. I think the design of the visitor is a very important element -- something hi-tech to offset the fantasy feel of the current characters, maybe? I think some are seeing your ideas as "funny" because you've drawn the characters all happy and smiley. Are they really totally peaceful or do they have a dark side? Maybe they're hiding their blasters behind their backs or something (a twist like sky_one mentioned). Of course, that contradicts what you wrote about before, so nevermind, just my warmongering getting out of control :D

Thanks you all for the kind words :D
I'll keep "the twist" in mind. I think you guys have got a really good point there. It might be the factor that would distinquish a nice/intresting image to an image you'd really really like, intresting point. I've worked some more on the story tonight and it's getting quite intresting actually. Will think about the twist factor for sure and see what I can do with it.
markw7, yes, the explorer is a vital piece of information. I think I will have be sure to make him the focal point. I'll also think about the underlying darker/negative side a bit.
Thanks all

Hi, I'm back. Took a little break, but I'm back with a clearer view of what I'm gonna do :D
I started modeling the kings head, but I don't feel like I'm far enough to show you (half-way so...) I also promised a color sketch of the scene, but as you'll read below there are some concept changes and a lot of extra things involved. Really gave thought to the "twist" and I'll have to revise some things and write some more :)
Kay, this is the third attampt to write this stuff :( One crash, one lack of sleep, but now it will work (I hope)
Here it goes (in one post I hope)
Basic Overview of happenings
Humans are strange. The last couple of years more and more scientists have warned people of the population grow and polution, but none of it mattered. The biggest part of the population just let the scientists talk and prefered the easy way of denying and keep using all the easy fast food and fast products. Inevitably things go wrong and the population on earth gets out of hand. Lots of children were born, especially in asia asia despite of all the birth control regulations, the kids grew up being poor and not having enough space. School classes were too big, too much traffic, no work because there arn't enough jobs for all the people. People were getting extremely annoyed and are on the brink of war. In the meantime, scientists have found alternate solutions.
The most obvious one would be to go to the moon. Several famillies went to live on the moon, of course it was widly marketed and on every television channel. Things went very well and more and more people moved to the moon. Space technology was developing at lightspeed and around the year 2069 the first custom atmosphere/ozon layer was created. This atmosphere was originally build to fill up the hole in the Ozon Layer. Because of all the unhealthy living the hole had become way to big and more and more UV-beams arrived earth. Most of the population died or were awfully sick so a solution was demanded. After The Patch was astablished, scientist decided it woul be a cool experiment to test it on the moon, it worked. For the first time people could walk on the moon and could breath and walk around without any equipments.
The atmoshpere heavily relied on the gardning industry. Plants were used to provide the oxygen (air ^.^ ) With the latest technologies planting trees and flowers was possible on the moon, but one had to find the right soil to plant them in. There was one spot that was really favoured for plantings, The River Scape. There flewed a river on the moon at that area, making the "earth" around it very good for plantings.
Humans lived on the front side of the moon, on the darkside of the moon, the conditions were to cold and icy for the humans to live. But when more and more people moved to the moon and started living there, the moon warmed up, becuase most of the heat waves stayed inside the atmosphere of the moon. The icecaps were melting, creating a river. This river was widly used by the people living there. The river seemed to make the people more energatic, fresh and less vulnurable against sickness. After this was concluded, the source had to be found.
Diggings near the Icy Rocks showed signs of minerals storred under the ice. After recearch scientists found that the crystals had a sort of energy field just like a heat field or radioactive field around them that provided a positive energy to the water. Of course the water was used a lot and on earth it was a valuable medicin. Of course we needed to find the real sourch, how did the crystals get on the moon? More diggins took place and it was discovered that the crystals were formed after a meteor containing a certain material collapsed with the moon. Soil samples were taken and scientists were highly paid to find out where this meteor had come from and if the place still existed.
Around the time of 2081, scientists had selected 7 possible planets. Robots and sattellites were send to check out the area and report to the labs. The results was postive and samples were taken and exemined. 3 planets of the 7 showed really positive samples. One planet had the highest comparisen with the moon surface around The Icy Rocks. Obviously a team had to be send to the planet. The mission was to be one of the most important missions ever to come in the history of space craft. The newest technologies were used. A Highway was created to the planets. Bots build little rings containing virtual black holes. The technique basically worked like a teleporter, you go in on one side and get out on the other. After test, the first human team was to be send to this quir planet.
Present happenings
Now here is the part where I'm not entirly sure. I've thought about my concept and I think it would be more usefull to create a team. It would be quite illogical to only send one explorer. At least one scientist will have to come with the explorer and there will probably be need for people like an biologist and an historicus to record things about the nature, plants, trees, earth, people etc.
Now I'm thinking about the "twist" It's pretty complicated. I really like my concepts, but I'll have to find a good situation in this whole history, which is epic and nice to look at, with the "twist" ;) I've wrote a bit of the history now and I think I'll start to write some more about how the party gets to the planet and how they react with the people there, what events will take place, discoveries are made, first encounteres, meetings etc. Write some more stuff about the people and nature on the planet, make up a little history, just type away and check out if I have any usefull ideas in my head. After that I'll probably have a really good idea of what I'm gonna do and all the mess in my head will be cleaned up I can and make it one big image to show you guys. I liked my previous idea, but I've got to evaluate some other ideas to check what would be the best and most epic thing to show and get this thing rollin'!! :p
Thanks for reading all this and be sure to check again soo, because there will probably be (alot) more ;)

Well done! Very detailed. It was a good read  I like this universe you're creating. As for the twist, as you say it will probably reveal itself just from more writing. I suspect that if you define the moment more -- 3 explorers entering the king's chambers, observed by attendants and guards and whatnot, meeting an alien race for the first time -- that the twist will emerge organically. For instance, there are a few pivotal moments at the beginning of the first Alien that would make great book covers -- the crew enters the Alien spacecraft and stands in front of the giant pilot; the crew discovers the pods for the first time. Although these are both creepy examples they have extremes in scale, they're not immediately about graphic violence (not yet) and they are about "first contact". I guess the crux of my example is bringing two things together that don't match, heightening the differences to make a visual concept clearer, and then manipulating the environment to create an emotion. The environment is very dark, the camera angles are skewed, etc to create tension.
Keep going!
userBrian

Wow. I see about your development of concept philosophy we were writing about in markw7's thread! I would also tend to go with the second concept. But I wouldn't show the back of the Earthling's head. You could show him in profile, after all he has to sweep his head to take in the huge size of the welcoming meeting. It could show the moment when he encompasses the vastness of characters he is faced with. Shades of a Star Wars bar. And I like the huge window curved arround. Reminds me of the mirror at the Moulin Rouge. Lots of strange ships with telescopes can be hanging arround getting a glimpse of this auspicious occasion! I'm working on some spaceships in 3D myself now. Lots to do! Yay!

markw7, Thanks man! Really apreciate the support. I'll write some more things out around tommorow night. About the alian movie. I've never seen it :hmm: I think I saw one movie, but that was some years ago and I can't recall much of it, I'll see if one of my friends happens to own it
userBrian, Yeah, I like to work it out and get the best idea possible. I could of course have gone with one of the original ideas, but when I work this things out, all kinds of possibilities enter my mind and I can see little flashes of images apearing in my head and I get all these tingles of exitment in my stomach becuase I know it will be cool if I work hard :D
I'll show the faces of the humans for sure. I figured that out some time ago and in the previous post I stated that I'll probably will use more than 1 person, so don't worry, you'll get a good look of him ;) You also understood the big window thing very well, that's kind of what I have in minde
Wow! great concept you got there, but you are missing one point, or I missunderstood your writting (probably)
How long did it took after the implant was made on the moon, for humans to walk around the place with no suit. I still think, you should give it a long period, I mean the place has to get used to the "air" It will cause a raised in bacterias unknown by men.
I don't know I think you should add some sort of transition change in there. After reading the whole thing out. I realised that the period of time is too short, I think you should work just a tiny bit in the scale of time .
- cheers!

I've made some quick test shapes to see how the model will react to facial expresions. It works quite good, the mouth shapes works pretty well and I'm happy about it :)
Some thing I should work on are:
- the masses at the brows, to make a better brow squeez.
- improve the mouth-crease-loop (which isn't really there atm)
Cya!

Great work you have done here... there is one thing I don't like and I think you should re-consider... The nostrils are kind of weird looking... I mean, he has such a big nose, I think you should reconsider the nostril design. Look at yourself in the mirror and stare at your nose "nostrils" I know this is not an human "but its a humanoid" there is no much difference from this character to us, when it comes to fisical anatomy (muscles, facial muscles, expresions, etc) But overal, it looks very good.
Congratulations!
-cheers; keep the good work.

Here are some more model screenies.
I updated the head topology, it's much better now IMO. The ears are like in the concept now.
I also started working on the body. I kept it simple. Blocking out all the volume and after that I'm going to add details and little borders, fancy things, juwels etc. As for the leg, it's blocked out too, nothing fancy, don't even have feet. The leg will be quite detailed since most of it will be visible.
tell me what ya think!
Well like I said before! Great job man!
My only concern is the shape of his head and the size of his brain... For a creature so smart/wise it doesnt have a front lobe and this might cause problems in the way this creature develope his functions and the way it makes desitions. I think the back of his head is ok, but the way his cranius is flat (front and top) makes me wonder... where is the brain...
Again this is my personal opinion..
- Cheers!

heya..
the modelling is coming along nicely, I like the test shapes you posted - more life into the character.
I'm not a fan of the nostrils tho, but that's my 2cents
Where are the updates??? I have been gone for about a week!!! common get back to work dude! :)
-cheers

oshiroii- Your last post was 11-03-04. Today is 12-28-04. You are missing in action.
This is exactly what I didn't want to do. That's why I just built on just about the first
thing I had in mind. I knew if I got started I'd have a base. And I never dreamed I'd
add that Opera Singer! Actually I could have stayed at the dream stage forever and
never thought of him. My ideas come from what I have, and trying to add to that, not
constantly re-inventing the wheel of original spark ideas, but who knows? You've got me thinking, and I like your approach. I think I will use it next time, maybe I wont get stuck
with a crazy opera singer! Best of wishes for the new year!

Should have posted this earlier I guess, but here it goes:
I've spend a lot of time to school and I worked on a lot of other things. I've done quite some 2d animation, research, life drawings, anatomy etc. so I got pretty much distracted from the project, which isn't good, I know. The real bad thing is that I'm missing files. The head files are ok, but the files in which I worked on the body seem to be errased from my computer. I've had way too many computer crashes and corrupt files and finally everything seems to be working ok, but I'm still missing some things. I'll work out the king and the guard some time, but I think this project has come to an end for me for now  Thanks for all the suppport and best wishes to you all ;)
