I was following this tutorial and all is going well but I can't seem to figure out how exactly he's adding these "shaders" to materials. Here's what I'm talking about. Thanks in advance.

Click the arrow to side of the texture field (could be either side depending on version) and a flyout menu will open listing shaders and other functions.

I see where you can add the bhodiNUT fallloff but I'm not getting all the options he's getting I just see the edit function for the gradient. Is there an arrow I'm missing? I must be blind or something.

I have a bhodiNUT fallloff material but I notice there's a lot more options available other than the edit gradient dialog box. Am I missing something? I also notice it's two tabs at the top that display "basic" and "shader" I'm not getting that even after loading the falloff material.

If I understand you correctly, the answer to your question is that you click on the material in the material manager and then drag it unto the object in the object manager. This action will add an icon to the right-hand side of the object. This "tag" not only indicates that a material is assigned to the object, it also has many properties. When you click on it, you'll see the properties in the attributes manager. One of these is the kind of mapping you want. Here you can choose "spherical mapping". Here you can also change the size of the texture, make it seamless, tile it,...

etc etc.

All correct, but you have to click on the material inside the material manager to bring up its properties in the Attributes Manager. Once you do that click on the "Basic" tab in the AM and you'll see all the material channels that are available. As you check the channels tabs appear. Clicking on the tabs brings up the properties for the channels. Inside most of these properties panels there is a field labeled "Texture" which you can click on to load a bitmap. Next to that field is an arrow which brings up the aforementioned flyout menu.

Tutorials are a great way to learn but you might first want to have a wee peak at the manual. :)

Perfectus, perfectissimus, superbus.

Even the quickstart tutorial tells how to do this.
