Just reserving some space, just in case one of my ideas works out.
I have been thining about the reinvisioning of a historical battle or event
but turning it in to a glalactic scale.
for example: what would D-Day look like in space 400 years in the future?
or Lewis and Clark 2215? How about space age Christopher Columbus or Ferdinand Magellan?
I am looking forward to seeing everyones progress.
these challenges have always been inspiring to me.

Hello Kory............Lewis and Clark 2215................. space age Christopher Columbus or Ferdinand Magellan...................Very interesting.Special ideas.I picture a retro-futuristic design with this in mind.I wish you the best, and may the high poly counts of a true Space opera go with you.................:arteest:

This is a first pass at a distant future Columbus.
I am thinking it may be a triptic...
I have an other idea that may be cool too.
Same theme but just a single image.
let me know what you think!

Nice ... very nice .... finally something different frome space battles and huge spaceships. It all depends on the judges character. If they apreciate at the true value an original ideea, you have a huge advantage... if they are more impressed by huge fleets and alot of destruction, you don't stand a chance....
As i see it: you should do the view from a cave or some sort ... and as it would be through the eyes of a inhabitant of the planet... not necesarily humanoid .... nor a green/gray alien :) ... the base ideea: "columb" discovers this new land, but that is not a "nobody's land".
Good Luck !! .. i like your ideea.

Well theres a tiny problem if you use the bottom concept like you drew it. I don't think it would be all that great of an accomplishment for that guy to cross the ocean if a city is like a mile away... :)
miketche
10-20-2004, 03:56 AM
I think these are epic! I really like the top idea. And the bottom would be my seconed choice. Maybe if the ship were even bigger in the bottom one, that would be great.

Nice theme and really beautiful concepts!!
I'm not sure what the rules are on a triptych..? (i think it's a great idea) Maybe it's worth checking on the Q&A thread before you get too much done...? You might have to revert to the single image (a development of the last one on the beach would be my favourite if you can really make it seem he's arrived from space... natives are a good idea too).
Good luck... the 2D's looking fantastic... can't wait to see the 3D!!

Here is a quick pass at Christopher Columbus 2492. I like the direction this is going in. Now on to the 3 ships.
That is going to be my greatist challange.
I'm not so good with the Sci-Fi stuff.
I guess that's why I always do it witha historical twist. That way it is closer to my comfort zone.

nice concept!!
i used to live and work on a replica of columbus' 'Santa Maria' (the one used in 1492:conquest of paradise) so this gets my juices going...

Hey KoryH ... nice to see u again , u and your work man....I like the historical twist u are giving to the look of your character.....and from the prev concepts ...i like them both very much althoughi have to say that the first one (view from inside spacecraft) reminds me a lot of StarWars ...a classical view where Darth Vader turns around and go in the com room to choke to death that admiral...lol....the other one with that guy on his knees is so great ...they look relaxed as if they found a new land.
Have fun ....

Great idea , dude ! Excellent pics , also !
You would have done mighty well in 2D too , you in that too, or just 3D ?
tough luck eMPeck :(
well , your Columbus is from the year 11000 while this one was from what,
2500 ? so it's not totally the same .. You could still work with the idea ,
maybe choose another explorer ?

Seems that there will be more "historical" images- I am going into similiar direction by myself (of course I do not want even to try to pretend I am as good as You but it's always good to see somebody thinking along the same lines).
Lovely character. I am not sure about first concept- IMHO third images palette doesn't seem to go well with other two but...well.. that's just a sketch so it will be probably refined I guess.

The top of the tryptic is by far my favorite part. Although doing a tryptic would be a cool idea, I think the image would feel a lot more epic on it's own.

This is a Fantastic Idea/Concept! That sketch/painting alone gave me goosebumps!
I look forward to seeing how this plays out!
KOryH
10-20-2004, 06:44 PM
Thanks everyone.
If I do go with the tryptic, I will most likely re work all three images.
The original ones were just to get my idea out of my head.
I'll do some more research and drawing.
I would really like to have each of the panels to have its own color theme,
then they will work better together.
If I go with a single image I have a few pencil sketches of that too.
I just need to get them in the computer.
Still the real challenge will be the design of the ships. I want to retain much of the original design, but you know cooler and spacier. he he.
I would love to get that familiar but strange and fantastic feel.
wish me luck!

I'll do it when I get home, that is, if I don't for get.
I think this one would be the canidate for the single image.
Thanks for the support.
Oh man ... patiently waits for next sketch. :D
These are really nice Kory. I kind of like the bridge scene since it shows the captain and his ships as they journey across the galaxy. However, it is a bit "Star Wars" like, as already mentioned. I'm sure you'll have the details worked out better.
Always been a fan of your 2D paintings & I'm looking forward to seeing this one in the final judging.

Here is another concept pass.
I refined the final panel and I think I just may focus on this one.
I still want to push the foreground a bit and may fudge the composition some more.
But, basicly this is it.
I still need to do more research and design the ships.
nice concepts men!! very nice!!!
Best luck!

The new landing concept looks slightly more dominant and powerful than the previous one, so it's very effective towards the whole grand theme.:D

10-21-2004, 06:26 AM
hm... I really like the pose & coloring of the purple sketch. The color of the sky seems more alien, which I think is a good contrast to the historical motif... and that pose is very emotional.
The last sketch was a little over-the-top in the retro styling, imho. If you can maintain a good balance between past & future I think you'll have an excellent piece on your hands.

10-21-2004, 06:33 AM
This last one is really great! I wish You good luck Kory! I think I won't compete directly with You and I'll pick different subject :) I already have few new ideas.

Again - wish You good luck, and waiting for 3d :)

10-21-2004, 07:32 AM
Like them all.But the last one seems less compelling, more toned down than the others. Not enough going on visually action wise.I know the moemnet is grand with discovery and all,but perhaps more action for spice would be good,Something more than just saucers or spacecraft, something fresh.Well just thinking out loud, what you do have is very good,I just think a bit more spice.:)

Thanks for the support.
I will be tweaking the coposition a bit more and strt developing the ship in the next few days.
I need to start pacing myself. We have lots of time I don't wan't to burn out.
I is fun seeing everyone take off so fast.
For me the hardest thing will be the modeling, So It will really slow down then.
No new sketches for today, I am building a ray-gun for my halloween costume.
So I had to work on that lastnight. It's fun to get away from the computer and use my hands for something else.
Thanks again for all your suggestions and kind words.

I am glad people are digging my work. I must be doing something right.
It means alot to me that there are so many supportive artists out there. This is such a great community that is is fun to bounce ideas off you guys.
duddlebug. yeah i really wanted it to feel like the original ships. I will have some solar sails or some thing like that too. They are retractable for re-entry and stuff.
The one thing I am going to play with is the width of the hull. I am thinking of widening it a bit. That will probably happen in 3D. I'll play with the porportions untill they feel right.
I am glad that the idea od space Columbus is actually appealing to people. I originally tought it could bee cheesy. I still need to be careful and not got too cliche. Creatingb iconic stuff like this is a thightrope walk.
Thanks again.

Very, very cool! I think it's more Columbus discovering the new world then Lewis and Clark... But what the hell. :). It's really interesting to see how you're fleshing out this idea in sketches. So much about the story is coming out in these. It's really to bad they don't let us do a bunch of images or some kind of sequence or something. I know the challenge is to tell a whole story with a single image but I just think it would be great to see all these images come to life in 3D. Anyway, the only comment I have is that I'm not to keen in the ships looking so stylistically like Ocean going sea vessels. Not that that should discourage you. It's just a matter of taste. :)

Thanks everyone!
No visual update today. I didn't have time to upload anything from home lastnight.
I did a design of a landing craft that the landing party will be getting out of on the beach.
I am also going to pull back in the composition a bit and show some more of the shore. So we can get more of a hint of the alien environment.
I started modeling the Santa Maria. Then I will salvage and rescale stuff to cobble together the other two ships. good ole "kit bashing" like in the old days.
BTW can anyone point me in the right direction for vehicle and space ship modeling tips and techniques. I have never done anything on this kind of scale. Some advice would be great.
Oh Yeah, the Chris Columbus model is started as well. I have done lots of characters, so no problem there. I might put up a pic of the non-textured model by weeks end.
Thanks again.

Hi Kory........................very nice indeed. For me he is just fine. But somewhere in me there is a love for caricatures, half human half toon calling out.A stylized more fun approach can work as well.......................You have one fine Christoper there, but perhaps a more ("Shrek like ;) ")influence would be more fun..................Just thinking out loud........Love your concept, such elegance and style, and I think a fun loving caricature would be just the spin on the entire thing....................Either way I'll be watching for more all the time............Nice all the way..............:arteest:

Hey, thanks guys!
I got some more work done this weekend, not much, but some.
I'll post some images when I can.
Nomad- Thanks for the images, the more reference and inspiration the better.
dom- I agree about the arms. They do seem a bit long. We'll see where I go with the style.
TiTaNiuM sAMuRa- I will have something in the forground that would lead one to believe they are not alone. I'll keep it hush hush for now. No need to give the house away just yet.
Virtuoso- thanks. I think I have the "Shrek style" figured out wink wink
Although I would love to do more of a wacky thing I think it may seem out of place with the theme. It will be a balance I will try to achieve.

Hello KOryH,
I think that the landing sketch #30 is the way to go...it's really evocative and could offer many chances of development....really nice...
:) :) Looking at your thread I noted that you and the others called Christopher Columbus....Christopher Columbus; but we in Italy call him "Cristoforo Colombo", and everybody there (in Italy, I'm not there at the moment) think that Christopher/Cristoforo was italian....I had a doubt and I looked at the Wikipedia...what I discovered? I found that there are doubts that he was Italian.....people in Portugal think that he was Portuguese, in Spain that he was Spanish (I know that because I went to Barcelona and there is a square and a statue dedicated to him, Cristofer Colon).....all that I'm saying has quite nothing to do with CG, anyway...It could be really funny if you will use some kind of out-of-the-lines flag, I don't know, like the Giamaican flag....it could be really funny and you'll drive crazy hundreds of people...:) :)
I think that you are developing a great project...Have a nice work. Bye. :)

I really like the style and idea.
Have you thought of including some of the local inhabitants watching from a hiding place? ie. in some bushes/behind some rocks in the foreground.
Might add to the drama and say something about the arrogance of man and the repetition of history......
... or politicise something more than you want! Just an idea.
KOryH
11-02-2004, 12:24 AM
Besides having many a country of origin Chris also was with out a doubt NOT the first one to discover "America" and certainly not main continental United States.
I will include clues in my image that would suggest prior inhabitants.
The arrogance of western explorers is something that is interesting to me.
the well it's "new to me" attitude is pretty naive or even ignorant.
That is why I choose this particular subject. It is totally laced with controversy.
The assumption that an inhabital planet would be uninhabited is a bit silly.

In Australia we had "Terra nullus"(sp?) which was a legal document made by the British that stated they did not recognise the ownership of the land by Aboriginals.
It's like a statement that admits they knew they were doing the wrong thing in some ways...
So the subtext of your piece is pretty big!
All this aside I really like the look and style of the piece so far.
Keep it up!

Also the symetry will be one of the last things I fix.

As for the textures.. it's mostly just local colors and simple procedures.
except for the face, I actually painted that one.
Luckily he won't take up to much space in the final image. also I will swap some props and have my bg characters too.
I have experimented with com cloth sims for the cape. they look good so far.

He truly looks like an explorer! The hair don't work to well for me though
The new concept looks good, but in my opinion not to Grand Space Opera.
Maybe if you add a whole fleet waiting in the far background. Like a whole civilization migrating to this planet and this space Colombus is their leader, showing all this burden of responsibility on his face.....
Anyway keep it up!
that last concept sketch is looking great. The graphic stripes are a nice addition too. But him standing on a root looks a bit strange!
I like the textured face . I'm not very fond of the white short hair though, but I understand that long hair isn't easy to get. But if he's seen from a bit far, maybe geometry and texture would be enough?
keep it up!

Hi KoryH,
I personaly really like your last sketch development with the integrated vegetation. This gives the picture some kind of mysterious mood. I also tried those kind of mood/style in my sketch 7 but I have to admit that at the same time it forfeits grandness because the content (characters, ships,...) gets framed to much by the environment. But I think it´s worth it to keep this idea. With some modification it could be possible to establish some grandness within this composition.

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I am still searching for something that will take the idea to the next level.
I feel that I am on the right track, but it needs some more fudging.
maybe that will come in the 3D layout. I would rather solve the problems in 2d first.
As for the abnoxious borders? well I was trying to work with in the original dimentions
so I had some pace to fill. On the final image it would be more subtle, like a simple star chart for the nastalgia feel. Right now it is cranked up way to high.

I think you have an excellent eye for mood and atmosphere.A high level of class is very prevalent in your art......I love the feel, the whimsical touch................The colors are beautiful, not over stated, just right, rich.but classey, not over done...............The modeling too is coming out aces.......Just a very nice piece of work on all cylinders, and an escape to a wonderful beautiful place,I sure would like to book passage on that vessel with "Future" Columbus.....See what you can do for me Kory..............;)
Beautiful piece, and I certanly look forward to seeing this progress............:arteest:

heya..
looking great as always...
I'll admit I'm kinda worried on how similar our projects are, I'm also going to have ships landing in the background... but in a challenge this big, there will be artists having similar ideas, great minds think alike as they say..
waiting for more!

some more development on colon.
I wanted to do this for a while I finally got a chance to. I wanted a character to look as if he could be bad or good.
I also decided to stay with my true callign and give him a bit of style.

I like the lower right version best,,,,,the smile brings alot of warmth and gets me closer to the character,I feel for him more,I care more because I like him........The others are nice too, they show there is another side to him as well........hair looks wind swept, and is a must, lose the bald look,if you got it (hair) flaunt it........;) :arteest:

I'm glad you guys are in to the direction I am going with the character.
After a few weeks of "realistic" stuff I couldn't stand it any more.
In my final image I want to have a the viewer asking if this is going to be a friendly place
to settle or not. And visa versa, is the settlement going to be good for the new world.
Not quite in your face space opera, but hopefully it will convey a story and be cool to look at.
thanks again!

well I'm back to work, but not on this.
I've been tending to the family.
The In-Laws have been in and out and finally we are alone.
Tired, but, alone.
Anyway, I will be getting back to work on this very soon.
I have done some more things since the last image post but haven't posted yet.
I'll try to do that tonight.
I am still working out the final composition. Then we will see some real progress.
Thanks for all the comments and suggestions!
see ya soon!
hey Kory, real cool update. not to mention the lighting effect and the subtleness of the moss....very eye catching and smooth to the eyes..... close to the real thing..... reminds me of kong set.... keep up:thumbsup:

Man you are scary, you can paint pretty good, that last painting you did (guy standing on vegatation) i think would compete on the 2D side, it's up there in my opinion, if you just brushed it up a little, i could see you winning...... ha ha ha, why not?. The 3D looks awsome as well, though there isn't enough to tell , from the leaves and the tree trunk, i think you will do some damage in the 3D section, consider the 2D side as well because it qualifies in my opinion and it seems that you just bang it out great paintings with no sweat, so, with just a little push on the painting, i think you could win both sides. I only hope to paint as well as you sir.

Do excuse for the (repeated) ask, but which the software that you used? To do the hair? Which the technique?

Oh Hey more replies,
Sorry I am so slow!
Don't worry I am still working on this. I just haven't had the time to sit down and up load any images.
some of the tings I have done are...
A group of "natives"
More vegitation
Final modeling and poses for Chris
composition tweaking.
As for the question about the hair.
I am using Worley Labs Sasquash and Lots of trial and error.
And I will not have time for the 2D part. besides that's what I do for a living and the 3D is a challenge and fun for me!
Thanks for the kind words!

I like it, one with feeling. The new face on the dude is perfect, yes he
looks like he could be good or bad. The background fading is nice. That
is just what I am working on now. Gotta add a foggy starry sky with space art.
All i can say as a crit is maybe make the guy a little closer to the front. That
is just make him a tiny bit bigger. Or not. Great the way it is. About time I
checked this thread again! This one goes to 11.
