Here is another layout tweak. and some more lighting and the ships.
I did a few things in PS to help with the next time I am in 3D.

Hi KOryH,
nice update... just one proposal: Maybe there could be an additional strong lightning coming from the viewers place. Some alien light or whatever just cool enough to grap the attention of this explorer standing on this vine.
KOryH
01-05-2005, 06:26 PM
Yeah I am planning on having quite a number of natives hiding in the jungle and one greeting.
they will have some lights with them. but I want to keep then mosly hidden.
I need to play with the contrast and all. that will come together in compositing and PS at the end.

The hair of the character is great, which software do you use?

01-11-2005, 01:32 PM
hi, great work ... I like "3d made forest" in general :)
how did you make the moss ? some plugin, or hand painted ?
KOryH
01-11-2005, 08:08 PM
Thanks guys for the comments.
For the hair and the moss I used Sasquatch in Lightwave. and comp'd it in .
Hey dimitris, Thanks. I will be playing with the foreground a bit later. I need to add some characters in there too. I will be doing some subtle volumetric light to add some atmospere and depth I think that will add to the overall tone of the picture.
See ya soon!

I can't wait to see your all together!
I am still amazed at some of the detail you and some other guys have in thier images.
It's very inspiring
Looking really nice, great mood. I love how your composition tells a story when read from top to bottom.
Though, I think your image looks quite flat. You could achieve more depth by blurring the very close foreground elements and/or by making them bigger. And also by loosing some saturation and contrast on the furthest ships to make them feel like they're big and far.. The best, I think, would be to make some half inside the clouds.
Also, lighting wise, the athmosphere would benefit from a stronger backlit effect (since 2 suns are on the back of the image) , and subtle translucencies on cloth / vegetation / sails.
Good luck for the final sprint, all the best!

azazel

some shape of distant montains on the horizon would add to the depth of the scene as well.

Yeah it seems like I relly need to tune the ships a bit to get a better sence of depth and scale. It has been something that has bothered me. I am also thinking of a little DOF but not
too much. I would like to keep it illustrative as much as possible.
I will be finishing tonight.

I love the designs and theme that you choose to use: very original and creative. :)
The only thing I noticed (and this is just my own nitpick, so you can take it with a grain of salt) is that, if the explorer was offering his hand of friendship or whatever to the little inhabitant....
wouldn't the guy get on his knees so the little dude can reach him?

I've received several questions about what the explorer is doing.
That’s a good thing. Questioning the image is what is supposed to happen.
This illustration is telling a story and it is up to you to come up with the outcome.
There are several things that can take place after this particular event.
It is left ambiguous in order for the viewer to bring his or her own opinions into the viewing of the picture.
Maybe it's a little sophisticated as compared to grotesque aliens and explosions and laser beams, but, come on, we are all artists and I expect a lot from you.
I am expecting you to enjoy pretty pictures AND think.
You deserve nothing less.

Old latin saying seems at place here: "si vis pacem, para bellum" hehe not sure if it's intentional, but i kinda see it that way. ;)

squibbit don't worry I felt the same way. It took me a while to figure out how to do what i wanted to do.
azazel I am not sure what that means but it sounds good anyway.
it IS intentional that he is both reaching his hand out in friendship and for his gun.
what is his true nature?
Is he even the first explorer to be there.
what will the natives hiding in the jungle do next?
who is in greater danger, if any at all?
who knows?

In this case, doen't seam that "historia magitra vitae est". :-)
By way, did you know that in the last Italian financial law 2005, our dear Silvio Berlsuconi has set up 2 millions of euros in the next 2 years, to finance the development of Cristoforo Colombo's "image"? And that the same law reserved, for example, only 500,000 euros to youth cultural projects?
No? I think that the majority of Italians don't know that either.
Good Luck. It's really a cool work...and I understand the meaning of that gun...don't worry.

agree. excellent work. it's not just modelled, textured and put together (somehow) - it's the work of someone who know what he does and worked for the athmosphere, not the technical things... and i must have said that before, but i really like your concept drawings KOryH. hope to see more from you in the future i wish you a place in the top 3, you would deserve it.

Thanks so much everyone,
I worked really hard on capturing a mood and a moment.
I feels good to know that people are responding to that.
It is these kind of moments when an artist can connect to the viewer
that make all the hard work worth it.
It was a long stressful and wonderful experience.
I am glad I had the opportunity to take part in this Challenge and be part of such a
warm and intelligent artistic community.
All the best to everyone who took part in the challenge and to the people who just
observed and felt compelled to give suggestions and comments.
Thanks again

and i must have said that before, but i really like your concept drawings KOryH.
I do too actually, although I think what impresses me most is how you seem to have brought those 2D and 3D skills together into a style that really compliments both.
I am more than a little envious :)

Hi KOryH,
This is by far my favorite entry. I love it. The concept is very refreshing. Your lighting, modeling, palette and compostion are flawless in my opinion. And it strongly conveys a story.
Does the skull in the foreground imply the creatures are hostile and will kill the humans?
Great work and very well done, good luck (especially with your dial up connection :))

Thanks piggy, I do mostly 2D stuff here at work, but at home I get to play in the Third!
I am still a slow modeler and it takes quite a bit of messing around to get what i want,
but it's fun and comes in handy to some extra stuff.
Stupendoh, who knows? thanks BTW those are kind words
essence, thanks it took a bit of planning and trial and error. Hopefully I will
get a chance to show a bit more of my process in the weeks to come.
as i look at the image again,i want to say congratulation in advance because its just great..... regardlesshttp://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Hmm... I think this is a very important statement. Quite often, mostly in these challenge contexts, I see some veeeeeeeery skilled modelers/texture artists working on individual image elements with sometimes inhuman skill levels - only to end up producing a final image that doesn't work at all... And conversely, I often spot guys with a solid 2D background who recently "started experimenting a little with 3D" who end up making final results that usually runs circles around skilled, but purely 3D-oriented artists.
I can only conclude that in terms of producing final and artistically valid work, there's no escaping the fact that a solid foundation in 2D/traditional arts is imperative... or that such skills should be acquired without further due. This would perhaps not necessarily imply drawing or painting skills, but could maybe also the eye of a great photographer or cinematographer, i.e. compositional and lighting skills, and simply being able to tell a good idea from a bad one in terms of visual impact.
I've personally been playing around with 3D as a hobbyist for more than four years now, but not until very recently have I realised what I said above....
Hmm... well, this is a great piece of work, possibly the best in the GSO challenge... and I'm off to try and learn some more 2D :D

good Idea, I've seen your drawings :D
and KOryH I hear you, speed modelling is not my thing really either, I find I have to put myself in a totally different frame of mind when going from 2 to 3D.....I actually have to think......slows me down immensely :argh: :D

ha ,
I actually know what you are talking about, as far as slowing down and thinking.
It's not so much that I don't have to think I when I draw, it's that when I am in 3D all my
decisions are more deliberate and conscience. This is what slows me down.
Also there are so many more skills and steps involved when creating 3D.
My co-workers here in my department, wich is ALL 2D, are amazed that I can do 3D at all.
However, I am constantly reminded that compared to the guys in,say, the MODELING department, I am a usless hack. Man, those guys are amazing. Inversly, they think it's amazing that we can draw.
wacky huh?
Anyway, I am glad that this has started some fun conversations!
keep up the comments and insights, they are always welcome.

guys aren't you getting a little ahead of yourselves, AFAIK the start of voting hasn't been announced yet (would surprise me anyway) and I am sure if there is a problem they'll get it sorted
and what you were describing before KOryH does indeed sound familiar, but then 3D is still quite a technical environment in comparison to 2D, it requires a different way of thinking
KOryH
01-19-2005, 06:03 PM
Hey FlyingP,
Yes perhaps a little ahead of ourselves indeed, but, I would like to take care of it sooner rather than later. I will be doing this off line so no need for further comments on the matter.
Back to art...
I don't know a bout that. there are some people that seem to modle as fast as I can draw.
I think tha it is a matter of comfotability to the tools.
like the difference between watercolors and oils.

agreed on the other issue
and yeah a lot of it is indeed a case of getting experience with the tools and the environment, just it's still a case for us 2D guys as well, that we have to start at the begging with 3D like everyone else, the skills needed a very different I feel, with exception for a good feeling for lighting and composition perhaps

eerrr eeerrr eeerrrr.....user....errorrrrr....
all fixed.
the luxury of having a good idea of where you are going is invaluable.
meaning. planning out the image with a fair amout of detail and direction
goes along way.
As part of my process, I jumped back and forth between 2D and 3D quite a bit
in order to figure out what was going to work.
I did the most experimenting in 2D because it was quicker for me.
once I had a plan and a 2D "template" for the peice everything in 3D was much easier.
I made the mistake early on to jump into 3D before I had my head really wrapped around what I was trying to do. I lost a lot of valuable time.
Luckily I tok several weeks off, because when i got back, I had a fresh look at it and realized somethings that should be changed.
Another thing planning in 2d helps is in knowing where to add detail and where to not be too concerned by the lack of it.
For example, I don't have much of anything modeled in the back of the ships, beacuse they are not in view. I had originally planed to model them completely, but that would have been a waste of time for the final composition.
blah blah blah,
sorry it's late and now I am just blabbling on.
Anyway,
thanks for all the support.

hmm... i just read those nice posts about art - it's something which makes me think for a longer time now.... those spezialists who are really awesome in a particular thing... it's something which makes me envious to see how someone can draw, and how anotherone can model, and the third one can create great mood with simple tools.... because i am not a spezialist in any form... which means i'm interested in so many things, i really CAN'T focus on a special thing and do this all the time. so i'm relativly useless for the big industry, i think.
at work i'm programming tools for 3ds max and realtime-engines. building low-poly models and stuff. at home i try to draw, write and visualize things, because i feel i have to. but i think i'm not that good at it (comparing to the great guys here). hmmm... just thinking, sorry :)

yeah its about proper disapline and planning. that is what makes an artist more professional.
do what you love is my best advice.
you will love the things that you are good at and be good at the things you love.
that's my belief anyway.
And Yeah I was the lead concept artist on a couple of those games. I haven't been at the company for a couple of years now but still have some close friends there. They were fun games to work on. I am always amused when I find out how much chicks dig those games.
I am glad someone is playing them.

you have create a beatifull image.
i think that the most intresting thing in your piece, it's that you really get to put the spectator in that universe of yours. the scene makes you wonder about the story of the characters and eventually imagine an adventure. sci/fi meets 1492's in another planet.
really great!!!

I try to do more than just the technical stuff so it is nice to hear people like it.
I had fun putting this together and it really was a challenge for me. I don't do this type of sci-fi too much. So it was difficult at times. The support here really got me through some of the creative blocks.
I am glad I participated in a challenge again after a couple of years away.
