Awfully solid sketches and very very interesting designs here.... No doubt this will turn into high-quality stuff. And as far as space slugs go, I'm certain they will need double-strength G-suits.... just a thought :D

Nice start to the spaceship. Excited to see this thing textured and the character. Quick question though: How well will you be able to see the pilot in the spaceship?? Unless you do a couple snapshots with close ups and a couple showing of the spaceship.

http://texwelt.net/slug/slug_rend4.jpg
yes, two pilots will be visible.
- the very close-to-camera one, and the one in the ship, at the center of the image.
if everything goes as I want, the composition will be very close to this grey render.
On the battleground will be secondary action, slugtroopers fighthing Evil Atomic Albino HedgeHogs.

nice models.. very consistent design.. but I think the hedghog is supposed to be very large scale right? Right now he looks very tiny and cute, like a toy.. I'd suggest some basic plating all around and maybe some tiny bolts to suggest scale. good luck man!

The ship looks like it's 'old', bit like wwII planes look old for us, yet it clearly belongs tu some future civilization. And that's what i really like in this design. Only thing i don't like is the pilot's 'bubble', i'd make it look like in early jet-fighters, more'sturdy.
great set of "droids", just the glass on the cockpit looks too thin. i'm very interested in your lighting/rendering.... lighten us.

I really like your designs and that ship is looking real nice. The glass does look thin tho. maybe adding thickness to it or increasing the refraction a bit will help.

And obviously the textures are just as great as the modeling. That ship looks better than what's allowed unfortunately, so you'll probably have to redo parts of it to make it a little less excellent.

This is definetly one of the best so far! I love the model and texture work, the concept, everything! How did you make those clouds?!? The only suggestion I have so far would be to make the slug's skin even shinier, and perhaps the terrain's flat tops could be at different levels. But damn, I'm truly amazed!
texxx
12-14-2004, 05:48 PM
Thanks for the comments,
-> teraarrc : i will try some sss, if some time remains. I'm not very familar with this technique.
-> m@ I've made some displace tests to make the "mantle" more "granuleux". If time remains too.
lotaH -> Yes, I've used the max unwarp modifier.
DrFx: -> the clouds are roughly rendered with afterburn, but essentially photoshop painted.
The terrain needs more geology levels, but it will be 60% covered by differents objects, so it will be ok like this.
Hey Fred, just want to say you r my favourite to win this thing!
I love your work bro, keep it up!

hi Fred
it's worth it to drop by the grand space opera threads. your work shows how sweet you are...i mean how diligent if thats the word. traditional sculpting is my specialty and i see that the slug is a little rushed. well, its a reference, so it's fine. but i can't say anything on your modeling, texturing and lighting. just keep working, less talking, but atleast write something, like steps on how you make this things?????? looking forward on the final image.

Hi Fred,
I just came across your Space Slugs. I like it very much!
I just wanted to say, that my entry will feature also a few slugs, but they are not used as a character, as in your work, but as some kind of interplanetary spaceship. So I hope nobody is offended (in fact I read of your work after finishing the basic skin textures on my wip slug).
Waiting to see more of your great concept.

So awesome!
I wish the landscape had a bit more detail / irregularity specifically on the cliff edges but... I think the style you have now probably fits better with the whimsy in your imagery.
When the heck do we get to see the whole image??? These bits and bites are driving me crazy!
:scream:
Great work so far!

Looking very good. There is a minor detail, however, that I think would improve your image. The clouds you rendered in the background seem too detailed and they don't really contribute to the overall image, I think. By removing them, you could get a clearer idea of the surface of this planet and it would also increase the sense of depth.
Great work!

IMO more dramatic lighting and overall color grade would not harm. Light above the clouds is usually pretty harsh, and here it could make things 'pop' ;) more

as usual, your every next step is great. I have a small idea... I think that this pilot would rock even more with some sort of toothpick in his mouth:)

Man everytime I come in here I see work that totally blows me away! The SSS is great, but what really blew my mind was the texture of the skin on the whole....
Fantastic work as usual, nothing much to critic...

i like this material on the pilot better.. because it looks more wet...
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/entries/7/4155/4155_1102964596_medium.jpg
maybe you can make your latest update more wet also..
texxx

Denman: im fact, the glossiness settings are the same, only the light is different.
I will try to make the slug as slimy as the render you have posted.

Hi Fred!
Nice updates here  Damn Your good at texturing!
Are the hoses suppose to look that way, i mean this huge amount of specularity, maybe they would look better when looking something like rubber, dunno.
Anyways, keep it up mate!
texxx
01-04-2005, 10:23 PM
yes, kakshk, this way, they look like shower hoses.
I like the wet version better too. If you can some how can get the skin shader to have more red in the epidermal layer of the shader it would really sell that skin.
