Hi all!
couldn't resist entering that one. This time I'll do something.
Here is my little background story:

Humans are no more. Their gift to life was lamarckian evolution; now, life understands itself and the universe that surrounds it. It can change its structure in real time to adapt itself to any changes.
Very soon, it was clear that to expand in the universe in an efficient way, life should find a way to capture stars and use their energy to the maximum, as "engines" for higher level organisms,
to travel in space in the crusade against entropy. Any other ways of retrieving energy from the universe have been proven more destructive.
So this is the big enterprise. First to transform earth in a high-level "catalyst" to inform matter that is drained from the solar system ( mainly the giant gazeous planets), and then grow up the solar organism from the orbit of mercury.
After that, travelling space and eating stars to feed the organism, and put "seeds" in other systems to inform matter until the whole galaxy is a living thing.. and then take control of the black hole in the center of the galaxy as an engine for the galactic organism.. etc.. etc..

The picture I will create takes place when the earth is still growing and uncomplete...
it is bigger, less dense than the current earth, and almost all atom of matter are used for the organism, which is like a gigantic cell : its atmosphere bends as enormous pseudopods grow into space, and inside, roots, canals , tunnels, chambers of matter and energy transformation fill what once was just solid or liquid rock.
In orbit, the leaves of this "earth-tree" gather a bit of the waste of energy that is solar light. One day it will not be a waste anymore, but not yet...
From Jupiter and Saturn come back gargantuan whale-shaped animals, who during their long travel in space have synthetised unnumerous amounts of aminoacids and highly informated proteins from the gazes they have gathered on the giant planets.

Inspirations : pictures of earth from space (of course), natural shapes, fractal shapes, english perpendicular gothic style, proteins, molecular organisation.

Good luck to all entrants, and have fun!

Here is a little sketch, very rough .. my final will be very different from that, that's just a test to find the feeling of planetary view and big scale. The surface of the earth will be far more tridimensional, with things going in and out, atmosphere bending, clouds following the surface variations. .. and the whale thingy will certainly not have a tail and things like that.
Stay tuned.

Incredible story there m@ - quite original and evocative - i like the idea of seeing all of the universe with life and that this could possibly be the moment when 'seeding' begins.

I think the ideas are nicely translated in your rough which is already conjuring an epic and timeless feel.

Stunning as always. This piece really stands out from the mass with it's style.
Hard to tell yet what size that structure is without any comparison to other elements, maybe it's the tower like element you have in your first sketch. Anyhow I'm sure it will look great in the final.

Wow, this is like the best story ever! The grandest duel: Gaia vs Entropy -the ultimate battle for life... If this story reads off your final pic, I cannot imagine a more complete interpretation of the subject...

Of course, the physics of today entails the battle to be decided. In favor of entropy, but it is not in the nature of life to give up :)

yoff : thanks a lot! yeah entropy would definitely prevail, since the simple fact of sustaining the life of an organism elevates the entropy of the universe around the system... but at least it tries to make the entropy augment less quickly!

----
If you didn't really understand the story here are some explanations :

well, it's my view of the future of life on earth and beyond...
First, humans discover how genes exactly work and they understand all the laws of self-organization of matter.
Then, by perfectionning their machines, making everything smaller and smaller, they stumble on the same obstacles as life has encountered during evolution of cells
and they are able at a certain moment to create new lifeforms, that are the best machines possible, since everything inside them has a definite purpose;
and so they can create anything they want with the energy that is given to them.

At a certain point humans themselves become futile in evolution because what they have created does everything they can do, but better

seen from a distance, mankind in this context and in the evolution of life can be seen as a step forward for life, in understanding itself and the universe that surrounds it, and in beeing able to transform its varieties at will.

well a way to make you understand: cars, now , are almost like animals ( they eat petrol (=concentrated solar energy)), they have a motor that is like intestines + heart + muscles, wheels that are like arms and feet, a skeletton, and they sh*t in the streets... (we have not much evolved since the middle ages, at this time it was pigs, now , cars)) . But compared to animals, cars have a very low efficiency, you need a big manufacture and wastes of energy to create them . In some time we will be able to make all parts grow like living tissues, and by understanding the laws of genetics and self organisation, maybe be able to create a car that grows entirely from a little "cell" if you give it the proper environment and energy... and if that is done very well, there will be no distinction between life and technology ; of course we will need to create some sorts of "enhanced" tissues and cells
that can be very tough, and work with more energy.

So in this future life is very well organised, because it can think, predict, and transform itself at will and generate new lifeforms for specific purpose ;not like in the past (now and before ), where only natural selection was at work : here, it is lamarckian evolution (=cultural evolution : we need something, so we create it).

so life knows that it needs to extend in the universe to continue
for that, it needs to travel in space
but every previous attempt to colonise space were not very succesful
because the energy it needs is too big... and life knows that the only energy source that can lead it to where it wants is the sun
like it has always been
so it plans to extend itself around the sun and "take it" as an "engine" to travel in space.

well my image will take place while life is still growing on earth, not yet around the sun
and when earth is a whole organism
no more soil or rock
a big beast
still quite round
and it needs to grow more
so it drains matter from the other planets of the solar system
like jupiter, saturn etc
and those "whales" are the organisms that carry the matter from the planets to earth.

:)

Great story and even better concepts :). I can't wait to see more. I have to admit that there is one thing I also thought of: using the sun as a energy source, but in my image planets will depict building the planets on suns(by decreasing the molecular size of the suns gazes and using it as a core for the planet) :). Well anyway keep it up and good luck.

Hi M@!
Your story is getting aready epical dimensions! And the concept scetches are really great :)
Aftre reading your explanation, I know U will like Alastair Reynold books! The civilisation is not so far developed as in your universe but there are many similar ideas :)
For example-huge suborbital gisslers, which transport passagners from spaceships on planets and vice versa. And the pilots aregenetically mutated whales, who are brilliant navigators. Actually the spaceship and the whale are basically same being-the ship is usually builded around whale :)

I like the whale ship, but since this species is all biological I picture a different type of propultion for the ship. Maybe a solar sail or something along the line of solar energy. I guess when I see the stream of energy shooting out the back I think mechanical, something biological would be more organic.

My guess is that you're working on form right now before exploring colours. You mentioned a couple of times that the visuals don't feel tridimensional enough. Perhaps an integral part of the interaction with earth-matter and space-void will be the gradation and play of colours. Partial transparency and translucency may also help you out. The images look very frosty right now with the stark black-white forms. I'm not quite sure about what I'm suggesting, but it is a thought.
The images remind me a bit of my sketching style; my pen has an obsession with edges. It bounds and defines the forms before they even have the chance to evolve or develop.

Pufferfish, Virtuoso, Panupat, D-3, pBarrelas, JamesMK, DimitrisLiatsos : thanks a lot guys, your input is motivating!

Borro : thank you! Using the sun as the energy source ? I think no human can claim copyright on this idea...;)

taavi : thank you! I will definitely check Alastair Reynold's books.

Mr Glass : thanks. actually I don't really see the problem with that kind of propulsion.. it is organic, but in a very advanced form.. they stock solar energy in antimatter in the specific tissues on earth (don't ask me how :p , but they have cells that do that) , and then they use antimatter reaction with gazes for propulsion.. they also use a kind of "quantum crawling" (don't really know what it is yet, but they sort of use the matrix of the universe and find some "lines of power" that we don't yet know to ease their trip in space ) that is materialized by the things under and just after their main fins. It is all biological, but very evolved... and I agree that it is hard to give that feel in the design. That's why I'm still thinking on that. (I don't want to go the "easy" organic route... meaning tentacles, slimy things, etc.. at this scale, life needs to be very organised and has not much freedom in forms, so it can't really have the chaos that usually rings with "organic" )

TiTaNiuM sAMuRa: thanks for your suggestions. And yes colors are not really worked yet.. I'm rather in a design/shapes phase than composition/colouring .

Good looking concepts, but lacking the pivotal/epic feel described in this challenge.I don't know about that: there are all different variations to the term "epic". If every entry was the same idea/theme, why hold the contest to begin with?
Personally, I think his concepts fit the Challenge nicely.

jonahhawk

Hulloooo Mathias,
Your story is vast and indeed epic, one dealing with not only history but evolution, the ultimate history. The challenge in any single image is to tell the story to the unitiated, the inocent passer-by. There is a great deal of detail on a micro and macro scale. It will be interesting to see how you show those details and the growth and evolution over time, instead of a single captured moment in that evolution.

The whale is beautiful. When I think of natural propulsion I think of jellyfish or a squid spirting ink and darting away. there is no reason why a natural living vessal could not expell a continuous stream of matter (or antimatter) as a means of propulsion. Think "The Bugs" in Starship Troopers.

Really, if I were naked and floating in space and I... expelled gas, I would propel myself through space!! Given my the right diet, I bet I could reach great speeds!!

kepp up the good work!

Jonah

austinkyo, pinnamraj, ArtisticVisions, jonahhawk : thanks for your input, much appreciated.

simoncvy : thanks, and you're totally right.. those are just design sketches, I have to concretize some quite abstract thoughts, I'm not working on the composition yet :) I'm confident in the epic feel my image will get in due time... I'm not hurrying :)

Truly very interesting.

Your ideas on design show allot of thought. I believe that the reason your ideas are "working" has to do with the play of scale and perspective from what we would normally expect.

At larger and larger scales, the universe takes the form of ever simpler physical forms, in this case spheres. Only at smaller scales does the universe begins to break away from near perfect geometry (with the extreme being at the quantum level were the physical universe loses all sense of deterministic stability) and begins to bifiburcates into more complex and chaotic patterns, which in our scale are the kinds of things we’d call clouds and mountains trees and whales. In your work in essence you seem to be running the universe backwards, and creating ever more complex forms at ever larger scales. This is refreshing and innovative.

On another level the idea of an organic existence at a macroscopic level plays on the concept that we are all part of one single living organism. I'm not sure if this is a strictly environmentalist work, but I can see some influence from that ideology.

As for the design itself, great work!

I am wondering if you have gotten any plans on how this will work out in a final composition, there are allot of elements and I'd like to see your idea for how perhaps you will get them to all tie together....

Either way great work or I truly appreciate the intellectual process behind this peace.

NicoDN

I love your whale, Mat !

Concept isn't new but could be very well used in the way you're taking.

mv
10-26-2004, 08:42 PM
WaZaR : thanks for your reply.. and no, I don't think that's really environmentalist.. not in Lovelock's Gaia style. Here, the consciousness life and then, the whole earth gets, comes from the humans. And when I say "earth is an organism" I literally mean it, with vessels, tissues etc, not the environmentalist biosphere vision.

NicoDN : thank you. Yeah, whales have a shape that really seems to go well with space! actually I'm giving this head to that organism to have some familiar look in the design. Since there will be no humans there, it will be hard for the viewer to attach to something he knows.

----
Well not had much time to work on it since last designs. I've yet to find the good image that could have the "dramatic" view the Space Opera theme requires. I should figure a simple way to make understand the threat of entropy, but that's not really easy :S .

In the meanwhile, here are some thoughts about the "whales" :

They actually don't travel in space by propelling. Under their main fins and after, they have "tissues" that unfold the chaos of quantum void and weaves some kind of "wires" made of the fabric of the universe. After that they grip on those wires with the tissues in their tail and thrust themselves forward. That makes them move not very very fast, but has a very low energetic cost.. it's more a structural and informational heavy process.
In their relatively long travel between the gazeous planets and the earth the matter they have stocked matures into living things, they have like a big bee-hive structure inside, and some of the matter becomes other whales, and all kind of "animals" and basic living tissues that can be used after in the earth system. We'll see some of those organisms playing around the city kind of structure they have on their back.

Really interesting story and wonderful composition!!
The same idea of evolution is eating my mind for quite a time, it seems really as the most obvious evolution step "immitate the nature" she know better, she has survived a loooong time, a lot longer than human!

Whale-ship looks gr8, maybe adding some plangton eating in the scene. Or even better big fish-ship eating small fish-ship nature rule visualization. Some personal thoughts

Keep them coming our way!

It is nice to see a very well thought out concept expressed in an illustartion. Who said that sci-fi art had no soul??

Intersting thought on propulsion, I was wondering if you are planning on showing this whole propulsion/generation process in the final composition?

So this image will be devoid of "human" life, instead everything will be organic in nature, there will not be a line separating the living from the "non living". This seems an intersting take on unification theory.

Looking forward to more work from you.

Buena Suerte amigo.

the organisms that grow inside the big whale grow as living forms, with a mind quite similar to human mind. They live in the same time in a virtual world where they have virtual hands and stuff so they can evolve in a human way. :)

I really like your designs, the crossing of organic living things with the space theme is something I also am thinking of for my concept. Perhaps the scene seems slightly empty now, but I also think that adds to the atmosphere.

I think there will be finally some humans .. last remnants, biologically immortal, they are in symbiosis with the earth organism, almost parasites. They are kept alive by the earth organism because they are seen as the "degree of freedom" of the system, the chaotic element preventing the system from crystalisation and sclerosis.

As I'm going to do a 3d layout for my final composition sketch, I did a low poly design of the "whale", which will also serve as base for high poly versions. the design has a bit evolved. That thing is very big (500-800 kms long), the belly is full of gazes from jupiter that have, during the trip, evolved into organic molecules and organisms, who have grown and learned, while going up. The teal zone is the zone where the higher level organisms are living. In orange, in front, that will be more detailed, fractal kind of arboresences, that in their tips take the fabric of the chaotic quantum void to weave an organised mesh on which the whale can "crawl" with the organs in its tail. The orange lines represent the organised universe fabric... which after a very short time returns to its chaotic state.

...That thing is very big (500-800 kms long)...

Now THAT is a seriously HUGE "spaceship". Will be a challenge itself to bring the scale visible. 500-800km gives you a alot of space for details. Great, can't wait to see the final one.

-pfish

mv
11-09-2004, 10:56 AM
thanks guys. It's not a spaceship... it's an animal ;) .I tried to put in the design all the functions he has. Gaz carrying/evolving : big belly . Vestigial aerodynamic form (used during the growth in jupiter) : the compressed whale body on the top/fins . Mode of spatial propulsion: the orange things/ tail .

About the mode of propulsion : an analogy is, think some one wants to walk on water, he freezes the water in front of him to do so, just in front of him, a bit further at each step, and then behind him, the ice melts again. Just here, water is the chaos of quantum void, and ice is an organised "crystal" of quantum universe.

I have still a bit to work on the overall design, and then the detailing will make more sense ;)

Pufferfish : hehe yes that's quite big. Most of that scale effect will be understood since the foreground will be inside the teal part in the diagram, looking forward.

JamesMK
11-09-2004, 11:16 AM
That looks like the starting point of a very accurate workflow... rough volume and colours like that. The overall volume feels pretty good, maybe the belly should extend backwards a bit further still, making the tail segment proportionally shorter, because the sideview looks to me a little bit more like a fish fry than a whale, proportionally speaking.

The background story gets better by the minute as these Hawkingesque implications of yours get explained.

Executive summary: Cool schtuff

mv
11-09-2004, 11:24 AM
thanks James. Yeah it's important to start with rough 3d designs, it makes you gain time in the end.
I should stop calling it a whale cause it's not a whale :D .. actually it has more like a dolphinesque head now. But you're maybe right about the belly, it might be more harmonic having it continue further back, but I want really to have this disproportionned sphere, to show it's full of stuff, almost on the edge of cracking. I will try different proportions later though.

JamesMK

well I started working on a lowpoly model of some structures on earth's surface for my composition sketch when I got carried away around a bit, found myself trying to model using only convex hexagons. Anyway that's quite an idea of some patterns that will be seen everywherer in my piece. Feels like it's shaping up, doesn't it? The top left area struck me as a little busy, but the rest certainly looks like it could work very well indeed. Particularly with a banana moon.

Looks very good. You've managed to give it the grand feeling now. Ok, its been there but now its clearly visible :) Would have been cool to see your 500km whales though, but you so well explained the reasons so I really gotta second this idea. Fine composition.

Keep em coming..

héhé,baby,is it the moon from the planet of the apes?lol
I like the feeling through this picture, something like relaxed atmosphere and immensity, congrat'.
However,to me, "Space Opera" don't mean only put planets and stars here and here. What do you exactly want to express? The signification of your picture is not clear enought for me..To add bunch of details could be dangerous if you not respect this rule before. The best things could be simple in signification and complexe in details.
please forgive me,if i'm wrong :)

Do you know Trankat ? A french Comix drawer.
He made a Comic call "HK". In this all spaceships have form of sea animals.

Here is a little sketch, very rough .. my final will be very different from that, that's just a test QUOTE]to find the feeling of planetary view and big scale. The surface of the earth will be far more tridimensional, with things going in and out, atmosphere bending, clouds following the surface variations. .. and the whale thingy will certainly not have a tail and things like that.
Stay tuned.

That is a cool concept. I'm not just saying this - it is inspiring to me.

hi Mat! it's nice to see you guys busy with your entry. very nice modeling btw. is that her final position? imho, i think it's more creative to show her frontal BUT with a light above her right or left, just enough to show the chest area without showing any details "below". anyway, it'll be nice to see the progression. good luck!

As you can deduct, I can't finish the challenge in time.
I just drop a line to say big thanks to everyone who supported me, none of the work I've done here is lost ; the challenge gave me a little boost to explore and construct some visual ideas that I wouldn't really have had the motivation to without it.

Anyway; thanks again, and good luck for the final run to all the entrants, see you around !
