View Full Version : realistic???
cdinic 08-18-2002, 08:36 PM trying to make a realistic looking award featuring that crazy logo Chris helped me create (thanks chris!)
What part of it looks the worst?
what can I do to improve it?
what part looks the best?
I am using MAX 5 with three lights. one SSE sky light from behind. then a spot light over head up front with diffuse turned off. I then cloned that light, cut the multiplier in half, turned specular off and difusse on.
I experiemented with a very complex lighting setup of 10 lights but wasn't able to achive photorealism.
I can change anything to achive a more realistic look, but! the logo must stay orange
thanks for your help!!

Looks pretty good, Something about the lighting bugs me a tad, but I can't put my finger on it.
As far as things I can put my finger on:
1) The Chrome textures on the base and nameplate need some work.
2) The Base is too busy, the marble looks great and all, but it's just a base, it takes something away from the actual award itself, the base should be something as subtle as you can make it, wood, straight metal, but as it stands the two clash.
It looks good, but can look better, keep tweeking.

I like the object itself a lot, but I really don't like the base. The marble is a bit overused in CG, maybe use black polished stone.
Get some reference material on engravings too. The fixture of the logo is out of centre, looks a bit dd.
The lighting looks good, although in this case I personally would use raytraced reflections and whitecards instead of normal specular highlights. The logo itself looks very glossy, so I'd expect more reflections.
Using some DOF would also add a lot of realism.
Softshadows for the main light?

i will vote for black patterened stone for base. also for PhotoR add some fresnel refletion on base to coat it. so it can reflect the sign above
the plate also needs better shader.
the above sign what you want it to look like. gold or just orrange?

just a nice high gloss orange.. basicly I need to wow a perspective client
here an up date.. I made the black stone texture from the old marble I used above. I am currently looking for some nice replacments.
I like the orange logo on the left, but the base on the right.. working on achive them at the same time..
I did add some fernel to these renders but not enough....
other thoughts?

Open the goblet.Max tutorial file (somewhere in scenes\raytrace I think). That file has a good setup for reflections.
The front of the base is very overlit in the left picture. Why not use raytrace for that material too? At least turn the specular down a bit so it's a nice gradient instead of a white blob :)
If I am correct you've used multiple whitecards. This makes the reflection a bit messy. Try using one big whitecard, maybe one that is very very long. It would look very nice if the reflection of that whitecard was one continuos line running over the surface of the object.
Overall, I liked the lighting setup of your first image the most. I do think the reflections of the second image add a lot to the object.
