View Full Version : Flickering lights during render

Hey,

Here's my latest dilemma: I render out a series of frames. I have one directional light in the scene with a shadow map of 512X512. I'm rendering tif files with an alpha so I can comp them with some other files later.

Any ideas? Here's what I'm ending up with:

Do you have the same problems if you turn shadows off?
Same problems with raytraced shadows?
same problems with different type of light (like a spotlight)?

I added another directional light to the scene and the flicker is gone. I don't know hwat it was, but it's not bugging me now.

I'm doing a test render for a crowd shot as a "proof of concept" kind of thing, so the perfect lighting isn't needed, but I do need to at least see the characters.

I'll look into what went wrong after I finish up. It's working for now so I'll just count my blessings and keep going.

I have a feeling that it may have something to do with the huge scale of my scene compared to the tiny shadow map on the lone light combined with the clipping plane settings on the camera.:curious:

I would:

increase your shadow map size. Base it off of the light's cone angle and the quality/sharpness required of the shadows. I'd start in the 2k range and work my way up.
turn off the auto clip settings for the camera. Set the far one to the shortest possible depth and near one to something like .1. A change from .001 to .1 will probably have no negative effects (unless you need to do some really close up work) but the difference in the accuracy of the depth map will be HUGE!
set the clip planes for the lights similar to that of the camera.
