Just a little sketch, it's the vegetal galactic!! Human and vegetal lives in peace!!

SuperXCM
10-20-2004, 01:51 AM
Ok, it's my first idea. It's the vegetal galactic! The human and vegetal, lives in peace and colonize the planet. Using the power of vegetal, the human can connect all the planet... It will be cool!

I like vegetal and flower! :arteest:

SuperXCM
10-20-2004, 03:09 PM
For the story :

First think to say, there no conflict here, and no war, just union and cooperation. Plants, human and other galactic race will be unified and construct together ours universe.
Around the center plant (a big flower), the humans and other races connect the different planet using the vegetal. All have understand that the technology can live in peace with the ecology, and they stop to kill and destruct the planets. They understand that the future can be beautiful, and that the vegetal can help them to evoluate to the "good way".
Now, all races of the universe work on the same project, the Galactic Unification.
Using plants and "eco-technology" - a new sort of technology using power of vegetal - all planets will be connect to the central flower. And all races will live in peace.

---------------------------------------------

It's just a idea. Ok, i know i'm a little utopîque (i don't know if it's the same word in english :hmm: ).

--------------------------------------------

The scene's moment will be at a new connect between two planets.
All the ship converge near the connection and help the plant to make the connection.

I hope that you understand what i wanted to tell. Sorry for my bad english...

maybe you can do a kind of mutant human, becuse of the time living whit the plants
some kind of girl god of the plants i dont know english eighter.
kind of girl that have some kind of control of the plants, like in batman forever.
cool ideas you have.

good luck, and remeber the most important is to have fun.

SuperXCM
10-22-2004, 03:21 PM
Jab': Thank good luck too, want to see your final work!! :)

Genesisa: Thank too!!! Yeah you've got a good idea! It's not the control of the plant but more a cooperation, but of course, i think, that a mutation is "inevitable" (i don't know if this word exist in english  ).

Thank again guys!! Good luck and like Genesisa sayd : remeber the most important is to have fun.

I like the whole symbiotic plant theme here - and it's a very original idea for this entire challenge. Hope you'll make the best of it

Sidenote: Yup, 'inevitable' is the same in english, though it sounds a lot cooler in, say, french.

Lombardo, how the heck are you getting that great translucent glow effect on the light ship??? It looks similar to the gas flame shader in XSI, but you seem to have more control over it. Is it just textured to simulate the effect, or are you backlighting and using some sort of incidence effect? VERY curious to find out how you achieved this!

For my light ship, i make it on 3D Studio Max 5, with procedural map (Translucent shader ) using falloff and playing with self-illu. The "flaming effect" is a blend of these procedural map using a bitmap as mask. Is very simple! :arteest:
No backlight, just one omni for the screen that i post. ;)

Hi Lombardo....................Too fast,into textures already.

My thoughts on texture pallette/color scheme would be to give more transparency to the parts.Giving much more of that "Organic look" you are going for.......Perhaps a more aqau marine effervessant look. And a more "Burgundy" for the red.burgundy being more red/black........Ok just some thoughts, hope they help some.Keep on keeping on over there in belgium ;) ...........................:arteest:

• However i can't deny the beauty of Destruction and big explotions, i hope peacefull images like ours don't get the kick when evaluation comes, anyway I must say it has been a very inspirational challenge and i hope it brings out the best of us all

I wish u a lucky challenge!

I was having the suspect they weren't final. You're right about the transparency, maybe with some more of it it will look more organic.

That was the problem in my comment (sorry if I wasn't more specific): the organic feel of the red texture is really OK, while the blue one seemed a bit plastic. That's all, SuperX! :o)

So i don't know... For challenging my-self i think i will do all with the default scanline of max 5...i will see... for now.. i'm always on Flash and the website that i must finish... ...
And, yersterday, playing with flash, i will have a illumination ... perhaps i will change all and do with the Ink&Paint texture... :lightbulb

Here come my "final" composition... i will change and add some details.
but the base is here.
According my first sketch and concept... all the ship converge to the connection point.
Of course, i will add more ship and details on the vegetal.
I draw for now a third ship, that will be more mecanical, it will help the connection.

Very cool composition, dude! This will be a very original final image.

The only crits I've got is sort of a minor point only, and merely based on personal preference, so feel free to totally disregard - but it would perhaps be a good idea to avoid getting too much of those saturated colours... Think of it as a part of the composition, saturation in some focused areas, while other secondary areas might be less colourful.

Alright,Lombardo......................very nice update, with some wild and fun to it.Nicely done.I already mentioned before that I like the organic approach very much.......This last update shows again more promise with results,James MK brought up a good point, and if I could add a thought here.......I think you would be better off in the long run to show glimpses ( or small parts) of certain textures, devide up the pallete more, sometimes by having less it shows more,Ok just a thought..............Keep a good watch over our Belgium (;) ) and continue on like this...................very nice Lombardo............:arteest:

Very nice progress, Lombardo! Sorry to hear about your computer problems, but there are still almost seventy days left in the competition and you've made such rapid strides it looks like you'll be done well before the deadline anyway.

By the way, the connector model is has so much interesting detail that I think it could benefit from a little more variation in color and texture. The almost monochromatic appearance masks a lot of the effort you've put into it, and in compositional terms it dominates over the ships ... but mainly the different components you've built it out of implies different materials, which is why, I think, the color scheme of the connector doesn't feel as successful as the ones you've chosen for the ship. Still, you've got plenty of time to test things out, since you can always do pen and ink color tests even if you don't have your computer available.

Best of luck!

When you have free time you can simply knock on a surface of various subjects (wall, wooden chair, the glasswares etc.) .The sound will give you an idea with what there should be a surface of your objects from which of materials it is possible them make. Hi all, i get back my computer, so i can work now, ... when i didn't have my computer, i think that i can add some light on the central plant. To look it more "alive", feel of energy also turn his texture more vegetal, more plant, like perhaps if you know "Jayce and The wheels warrior" (it's the correct title in english?)...and add beginning of texture in 2 planet.. but it's just a test.. difficult to work again in 3D... after this time.
But a lot of idea in my brain... must "defrag" all of this :p

hey dont feel bad about being put out of action. I spent a good deal of last week horribly ill from food posioning. I actually had to go the hospital, it got rather bad. When I got better and saw how far ahead everyone was, and how many new entires there are, I felt kind of out of it. But what the hey,... just participating in the challenge is great. I've been learing alot and using a whole slueth of new techniques. No darn bug is gonig to put me out of competition.

Either way your work is great,.... but I like the previous "translucent blue" shader you had for the vine stucture. This planet texture just dosnt do it for me. The colors seem so flat compared to how they were before. I really think you should reconsider the new shaders...

Hey Lombardo - good to see you back!

Interesting update - this is really turning into something very unique - the colorset is way cool, keep going! If any crits, I feel that the center planet is dominating a bit, stealing focus from the nice organic shapes. Now you can continue to defrag :)

I am having some serious problems with the color composition. In the final image the differnt colors values are in competition with each other, and the differnt areas of color, because of their optical conflict become discontinious spaces. Addtionally I think your image is beging to use far to many differnt colors, both in hue and value.

I have taken the liberty (forgive me) of testing some alternative solutions to the color treatment of your image. Of importance it should be noted that throughout this alternative there is an underlying unifing color ( in this case orange as you've guess my fav color) that works to harmonize the differnt color areas of purple and green and blue. This of course is only a test and you could try out differnt combinations, the important thing that more attentions should be paid to make sure the colors are harmonious throughout the image. A helpfull tip would be to from early on choose a specific and limited color gamut so that during the production process all the different elements maintain color harmony.

yes Stefano, i like too this attitude, it's a cool environment to learn! (i don't know if it's correct in english?).
I've one question for all;
i can decide me, it is better to try now in 3DS Max to give the good color and contrast, or i must place color and then adjust it after with photoshop... i know that some adjustement and compositing will do with photoshop, but until where i can change my 3Dmax texture?
I've tryed to change my texture in max to get some color i want but, now in photoshop, i can't get the good color, and the details is too contrasted, and "burn"... also just the render of max is not correct... it's not the good color.

WazaR

I would suggest that in 3dsmax you use dull low saturation colors, do the render then in photoshop adjust the hue and saturation using color layers and differnt color transfer moods. Remeber that the final entry is an image,... so you can cheat ALOT with the colors.

You can use textures in max with bump spec and gloss channels, and for diffuse use a texture but try to keep its color gamut low so that it can be later adjusted in photoshop.

The process I used for the alternative solution is as follows...

load image
use *auto levels* to get a better contrast with the burned look
reduce the saturation of the purple color in the middle
adjust saturation of purple color to be more wine red
create new layer, transfer mood *overlay*, paint in green planets and nebula
create new layer, fill with blue, erase lower 1/3, lower opacity, change transfer mood
create new layer, paint in purplered on vine´s stucture, colordodge transfer mood
adjust sharpness using *unsharp mask*, give it the gritty look
create new layer, fill in organe, change transfer mood
create new layer, paint in white high lights with overlay transfer mood

thats about it.
Just keep in mind that for the final production you will have to do this process for every element.

I don't know Lombardo, I'm kind of split in this color thing. On one hand, I completely agree with WazaR that picking fewer colors and balance it more will give a more harmonic image. On the other hand, your colortests are so completely wild, I've seen nothing like it! The contrasting colors give a really good energy. I think you could really pull it off, using high saturated colors like this, if you balance them by bringing in fragments of them in different places in the image.

Hard to explain - let me show you

Just added some random dots to make myself clearer.

Keep up the good work - this is really a fun thread to follow:thumbsup:

Personally, I'd try to get whatever is possible from the 3D app. That's because color correction in Photoshop is... well, color "correction". I'm no Photoshop guru, quite the opposite, but I think that having a very good and satisfying starting point is way better...

Gunilla--->Thanks a lot! I understand what you want to explain... you're right too... for now i don't know which i prefer, i think it will be a mix between the two, i want to keep these "wild color", but, for the central plant certainly, i'll change color... the link of WazaR learn me a lot, :arteest:
For sure, i'll keep my style on the image. But with some "upgrade" ;)

For now, i continue to modelise the last objects, 'cause there are a lot to do, the vegetation on the central plant, is not finished, this cylindre is just to have a path, now i modelise it, and all vegetal that they attach the planet must be modelisate too, like the central plant. I want to put a lot of details on it. :wip:
I would like to thanks you again, for your explain, it's cool when we got some different comment. I think, it's because comment are different, that the image can be better!!

Doublecrash---> Thanks man, your opinion is welcome of course!
I'm agree with you, but, the problem was, this "color dodge style", it's difficult to obtain it with only max, my texture must be correct in max, but some mix and compositing in photoshop, can help. Just duplicate the layer in photoshop and put it in "overlay", , it can help for sure!
It was also difficult to change all my texture, all are procedural do it in max, only bitmap for mask, and change all the color and attempt to have something like i want take a lot of time, and finally don't give what i want... :banghead:
But more i work with this, more i can understand a lot of thing, and now i can think about my future image, when i work on 3Dmax, i adapt my texture to have the effect i want after in photoshop. I'm also agree with you when you saied :
" I think that having a very good and satisfying starting point is way better..."
I think that a good work in max, can be easily better in photoshop, if i like already my image with the render of max, than, work on it on photoshop, it's pleasure, and give a another dimension of the image. It's just a upgrade. ;)

Thanks for your comment all! I think it's a good discussion we have here... i'm learning a lot.

Raw renders, be it from maya, mental ray, or even renderman, RARELY are "just right". Color Correction and post post production on 3d renders are a big part of CGI art. Seeing as this is a still image it is HIGHLY recommend to create flexible renders that allow for maximal adjustments because you will be spending quite a deal of time tweaking differnt aspects of the image until it is "perfect". Creating renders that leave you little room for adjustments seriously limits your visual options. Also, in the FAQ the mods even stated that color composition and photoshop adjustments were highly recommend, as long as the mayority of the image is fundamentally 3d.

It is somewhat odd that people from such diffrent backgrounds can get together, use a common langue of english and work on creating outstanding art. Cgtalk is a pretty cool place.

I think one of the best things I've done since I decided to switch to XSI is to participate into this challenge: just reading people's comments and posts is a sort of "continuous tutorial" :D

hi:) your idea getting cool! i thing
DOF is nesessary. For getting colorful harmonic image just could use some simple formula: for exmp. you have 3 neighbour spheres :red ,blue, yellow- it must be a little bit form every color on each sphere + color from entire atmosphere.

Lombardo, maybe this will make you feel better about using Photoshop for color adjustments and other tricks: the "FX Tree" -- the built-in compositor that comes with XSI Advanced -- contains a number of filters for adjusting individual frames or batch-processing raw render output. Anyone who has ever used Photoshop will immediately recognize that these tools which have been integrated into this very expensive bit of software are basically just Photoshop filters. No more, and no less. :-) In fact, I'm willing to bet they're licensed from Adobe.

Is it handy to have 'em in XSI? Sure -- particularly the batch-rendering of the filter effects. But what it all comes down to is that "state-of-the-art" in 3D has as much to do with workflow efficiency as "can my renderer do that?" In the end, when it comes to a still, the only thing that counts is how it looks.

Thanks Nuclearman!

I never used XSI, in max there is the video post too, i think the FX-Tree is something looking like it. But certainly more evoluate.
Now that i understand what i can do, i've find my final render, it's sure. I've done some test, and it become very cool. I'll must correct some details, but i hope to post soon.

Hello all,
here a update of the next modeling, i modelise the connection bridge, it is in construction, we can see the vegetal (transparant) and the metal come to it.
But i have a big big problem, the image here is the only i can have, and with a low resolution. My computer can render it ... this object has more than 350 000 poly... :( but i must duplicate it!! And i need two like this!! :'(
If anyone know a good technic to optimize? But i want to keep the original form.

Thanks.

Lombardo..............I think your best bet is to instance if you already have'nt thought about that, and also consider using just two,not three connection bridges, two will be just as effective as three I think.................Plus look into compositing,it can be your best friend........Let me know more about what you are up against,I might be able to help in a more precise way..........I'll be looking for you, work hard and well...............:) :arteest:

Thanks Virtuoso!!

I do instance, but i need to do two differents. But it's too many poly.
I've find another thing, my max file make 150meg, but it was fragmented (2.120 parts) , i did a defrag, now is more fluid also when it save.
I wouldn't saied i need 3 connections, i would like to said i need to make 2 connections, copy it one time. I don't explain correctly i mean.
But now after some test, i will do only one like this.
Coming around the central planet.
And i decided also to do the box that are around the connection, more simply, now they are only box, before, i have modelisate them :
http://www.superxcm.com/cgplak.jpg
too more poly for a box. We can't see it, it was too far. :banghead:
For the composite, it's a good idea, i must do that.
And stop my brain a little,... don't try to make too much. Specially when the objet is so far. ;)
Thanks again my friend!
And sorry for my bad english!:buttrock:

Gunilla
11-24-2004, 11:30 AM
Hey! Somehow I managed to miss the bridge - looking so great! And colors are wonderful ... lovely!

As for poly count - if instance or reference of the object isn't enough, perhaps you could just bring them into separate layers for rendering? I've never tried this but perhaps it could work.
how about using the optimize modifyer - would that help?

Hope you find a solution and keep bringing us stuff like this

SuperXCM
11-24-2004, 04:23 PM
Thanks artemesia66 and Gunilla!! :)

The poly count is not a problem now!! I've replace the "complex box" by simple box (look at the image post before, it was my metal box for the bridge, too much poly ;) ) , now the connection bridge has 10.000 poly, it's more easy!!

Thanks again for reply!!

• You've got some cool updates since my last visit!, I do agree with Centavrus about coloring, also with visrtuoso about the bridges, you can also use only one and use post compositing
to add a million bridges more, so you don't have to overload your scene ( I use after effects, but Photoshop works excellent, also digital fusion or combustion are cool choices)

• It would be cool some dark blues and some dark yellows in the bacground, as it is now seems too magenta

• Good to see your evolution pal!

Good to see an update!

I'm not quite sure about the toon shaders for this pic... it looks cool, yes - but I think the earlier falloff style looked better. It might be the size of the image or the scale of the ink but I find it more difficult to see the nice modeling. Perhaps if your previous shaders hadn't been so nice I would have loved this :) Keep trying though, I might change my mind.
Looking forward to the next update

I really like the direction this is taking. One thing for me--the two halves of the image look like they're done with different techniques--the right half is monochrme/sepia, the left half has a colourful toon shader. IMHO, I think you need to introduce some small amount of colour into the right.

Ok, here a compositing with the part, but "à l'arrache" like we say in Belgium... it mean, very very quick!! (Render the part->Photoshop->Cutwith polygonal lasso->Past ;)), my glow are too big, i must correct that... and perhaps the new plant are too slim...( i don't know, "slim" is the good word?) Perhaps they can be more big, but i don't want that they take too many space on my pictures, they are not the most important on my composition... what do you think?
I also adjust a little the saturation, like terraarc sayed...

...................I would agree that you should single out or show off a primary model/piece of your work, this will center the viewers eye, than they can look at the parameters of this piece........Allow the eye to flow from a central figure/item to the surroundings.......

Either way,you have a very intense and nice piece here, nice work and real interesting Lombardo........keep going strong, and i wish you the very best........:buttrock: :)

All comments are very welcome!!! Because i'm not sure for this changement.

Ok, i explain ;
i want to put a giant robot in the middle of the image, as he comes to the camera... in his head we will see the pilot and cokpit... to show more that the robot is giant.
I don't now if it's a good idea... but perhaps put in the hand of the robot a crystal flower... sign of hope... i know it's a strange idea!!! :$
C&C are welcome as always!! :p

Sorry for this ugly sketch :s

Hi Lombardo...........I think the robot is turning out really well.very nice design and flow to the modeling.A nice almost organic feel to it.I could only suggest the feet to have some added size........As well as the hands, but for the hands that's just a taste thing. The feet do need more size to handle the frame of the robot.........

But still I can say this is a very nice piece of work,I really think alot of it.Really weell done.I'll stay tuned, but you know that already ;) .........Again two thumbs up........

Ok, here a update, i've put the robot with texture ( leg and middle of body are not meshsmooth) on the image and also put some black rectangle on the top and the bottom to see that the robot get out of them.
Not color correction on the robot for now, and no compositing, just put on my last update.
I'm not sure for the flower texture ( omg so difficult to modelise...:'( )...
I'll change again the position of the ship, put them on the right.
Hope you like this update!

The robot turned out great mate! Fits pretty well in the image...and I like the saturation...it makes it come out from the rest of the image....

Only thing I find off is it's position....it's completely hiding the ship...

And an idea....instead of showing the pilot inside....why not showing the reflection of the one he gives the flower too....like that astronaut image reflecting earth in his helmet....:)

My friend....you've already done a whole bunch of great work....:bounce::bounce:

Hi Lombardo.............Your efforts here sure are paying off.....Lots of nice eye candy.each piece turned out real nice in there own right.......The robot is a wonderful job,Really a nice design and overall piece of work on him.The flower is a nice delicate touch, the extra hard modeling was worth it (;) )..........

I can only suggest at this time to seperate the ships from the robot a touch, possibly scale down the robot a touch,a nitpick.................You've done a wonderful job here Lombardo, and earned a Worlds best Belgian beer, well many of them for your efforts, but wait until the challenge is over to drink them.;)

MogodtBackAgain---> Thanks! Hehe, "extravagant", it's a french word, no? ;)

terraarc--->Thanks my friend!! Happy that you like this update. Agree for the position of the robot, also if i wanted change the ship position, i've change the robot too. Now is more in the middle, and the "flower-light ship" from the left top are now on the right, and the "vegetal-wave ship" (like i love to call it :)) is more on the left, coming from the bottom behind the robot.
I hope to post soon a update, working on some compositing.
For the reflection is a very very good idea, i'm not sure now for the cockpit, i'll try your idea.
Thanks again!

Russel_Nash--->Thanks for reply! Can you be more precice to what bother you in the head  ... It can help me!! Perhaps i can try to change the position of the head protection, for now is turn to the back, perhaps i can try to turn it, to come front of the head. Hi, I like the last one the most. As for the head, I think the visor is to flat. May be you could add some more detail here. On the other hand it looks like some kind of screen, so may be you could simply add a picture. But this is only my personal point of view.

The overall design is amazing. :bounce:

I think the last or the one before it looks best. Both are really nice - either way, I'd suggest you make the rose more saturated than the rest to have it stand out more. Imagine the last one with a burning orange hue just for the rose... But I'm sure you'll figure out a way to make this become a splendid final!

Oh, and I greatfully accept your invitation for strong Belgian beer - my guess we all need some when this is over

Goul
01-11-2005, 03:53 PM
II prefer this version than the two one before , wich were a bit flat !
I'm agree with gunilla for the rose ,it could be better a bit more saturated !

For the rest .... => i'm fan
Unique style and very nice realisation !

artemesia66
01-11-2005, 05:18 PM
I think i like the most recent version, but IMHO the rose is a bit lacking--its colour is too uniform, and not strong enough. I think the stema nd the flower should be diferent colours, and I'd saturate the petals more. just my 2c. Anyway, great work, well done.
