OK then! Where do I start?
First of all I'd like to thank those who made this challenge possible, cuz it is great, and I am totally over the moon right now (get it, get it? J - oh, never mind! ). Previous challenges have been great too but now I actually have time for this one. So get ready!
I’ll try to explain my sloppy sketches here:
1. The idea of civilization that consumes stars, drains their energy until they (stars) are no more.
2. Actually I have some strong basics in astronomy (J) and I know how it works, so I’ll try to twist mine universe as far as I can (these sketches are just a warm-up). OK then, this sketch represents a star system consisting of 3 different stars that orbit each other. And in the center of this orbit is a… PARTY DOME, the greatest place where to hang out in the universe. Those stars shine in 3 different lights: red, yellow, and white [or blue], producing incredible light shows for the party people.
3. Well, not much to explain here, camping LIVES in the future, in another form though. When the only “wild” place left is outer space. Unfortunately without an oxygen there’s no fire in the space, so it’s just a holographic projection.
4. Space highway, I don’t know –may be some space-car crashes on a light speed could work for this one.
5. A tale of epic proportions. There is this man who protects his home planet from a fleet of invaders, he is invincible, no space fleet can pass him.
6. Just a crash entry by some enormous space ship, could be fun to make… nothing original though, a common eye-candy.
7. “Surviving Victory” – title tells the story. A mother ship that has sustained heavy damage in the battle returns to base as a victor. People cheering- victory is ours!
8. A kind of joke “stop sitting indoors and go play outside finally”. Outside… OUTSIDE!!!
Well those are my raw concepts for now. Trying to catch ideas floating in my head and picking those I like! I’ll try to come up with something original next time.
___
Excuse my crampy english and sloppy sketches.

I kinda like that comicbook layout of your thumbnails actually - there seems to be no lack of ideas here.
Suggestion: The protector (dude) should be called 'your Dudeness' or 'El Duderino' (if you're not into the whole brevity thing) .... Extra points if you identify the movie from which that blabber originates...
Good luck!

:banghead: I can't think of any movie titled that way [exept for "desperado", but thats not really apropriate..., or maybe not - bunch of machos in space, in their saloon like spaceships, fighting each other with their cool-macho-careless attitude -DANG, THATS A GOOD IDEA]
there will be more sketches by the way!

So, you're talking space cowboys now? Why not.
One hint for the movie quiz: Jeff Bridges. A free beer smily awaits the winner.

It's "Simpatico", isn't it?
too bad I haven't seen that one, but google helps!
really looking forward for that beer smily

The Space Highway is the one that grabs me. It could noodle all over, from planet to planet. The idea of a wreck on the highway could be a great part of a bigger story, like someone can't get somewhere on time to save the universe because someone's spacecar overheated and jammed up the highway. Cool.
Good luck, you're off to a good start.
Bret
Big Lebowski is my favorite movie, BTW

I am still not too shure about the way I'm going to go but I really like the idea of "Party dome", other ideas of mine might be later incorporated into that image (like the lightspeed highway leading to the party dome, I like that idea too).
In the image above I'm trying out the composition (fitting in 3 stars (yes those 3 spheres are indeed stars :)) isn't easy).
Anyway some concepts of the models will be made during this weekend. See you all then!
Not bad, but I prefer the star sucking concept (nr 1.) Its more creative and has a bigger sense of scale.
Those glass domes do look more cute to me, not really big and awe inspiring. And it's not the newest of ideas .. (except for the party aspect, which is really cool, the biggest disco in the universe .. 45 dance floors, party all night) Maybe the party needs so much energy, the have to plug in to a star, for all those laser light shows.

well, like I said earlyer, I will incorporate all of my previous ideas into this one.
here's a little secret what I do:
1. at first I come up with tons of ideas
2. then I take one that I like the most
3. after that I create a sort of table of points of interest like that:
need bateries? -8
surviving victory -6
camping "outside" -5
lightspeed highway -9
mothership crashing into atmosphere -1
the protector dude -3
whoever scores the highest will be encorporated into the image that I picked earlyer [at the step number 1]
"a plot is a small boat in the great see of worlds you create"
can't remember who said that [and it was in latvian- so the translation doesn't sound that good], but I think that's one of the best sayings I have ever heard
p.s. and the shapes of the dome will change too, but I'll keep that to my self for now

while I'm still working on the final concept of the dome, I decided to post some of the concepts of the ships flying around it!

Very nice ships. In fact they look much better then dome IMHO- they do have much more character.

well I'm still working on the dome concept! but I am starting to doubt on the giant disco idea!
does anyone like this?, cuz if not I will try to come up with something more interesting!

Have I heard partydome?? Cool, let me in...:bounce:
Thanx for your post in my thread, Gunaars, but I think your ideas are much better - they're really unique, man! Do the partydome-idea and stay original - it's really cool imho!
Best luck and cya:beer:

I'm still not too shure. well maybe the dome idea will be there, but will it be just a party dome, don't know...
I'm starting to think about space-zoo, each civilisation will have its entry, with a different head, not like now- just those damn monkeys!
Or maybe space amusement park...
eh, nevermind, I am just too tired to post and think anymore!

There's plenty of time Gunaars, however, to have a general concept beforehand as soon as possible is advisable so you will have good time to flesh out your chosen idea. I would choose the star sucker.

and here are the domed imitations.
So, this is some kind of zoo of the future, where there are imitations of all the benefits that each civlisation can bring!

Hello Riga, here is Tallinn!
The Sucker Dude - 10 points!
:bounce:
I really like the concept. While everyone else are messing with apocalyptic disasters, there is someone who is planning an interstellar party/or zoo!
If U have original concept-then U are a half winner already :)
I remember another sucker-dude from spielbergs AI as well :)
Actually every entrance face might look like the representative of each civilization.
One huma face, one monkey face one alien face and so on!
But it means a really freaky modelling and texturing :)
Or maybe a huge spaceship which looks like a huge lenin/marx/engels statue??

Space dome, parties? Cool!!!
This is really funny... and the "entrance" to your dome is great. Man, I'll bookmark this one.

terre, taavi! yup, you got my idea correctly, there will be a different head for each civilisation, and inspiration for those entrances did came form Spielbergs A.I.!

did some modeling during the weekend, and here are the results.
This is the dome that will be put in the background, due to its low details. There will be more domes, each for every civilsation. And the focus will be put on the party civilisation... that I haven't jet thought of.

Really like your modeling. Very interesting design. One point, all the concept work seems to base the civilization on humans. Maybe introduce alternate physiologies in the architecture. Just a thought.
But looking good.

Nice work.Clean and quite detailed.I think that for BG really detailed.I think the cables are to thick however,if I am understanding the idea well enough........The idea is interesting and has a good approach,it makes you think.........Doing very nicely Gunaars.....Keep at it.:arteest:
Andrei2k
11-01-2004, 08:46 PM
Yes, the idea is definitely provocative indeed. It is about time that the 'leeching element' be used for good (parties) instead of eeeevviiiiilll.

Very nice update - I agree about the cables as pointed out... making them thinner would make the structure look bigger indeed. Cool schtuff nevertheless.

WOW! So many replies!
Uberman: Well, all of those concepts were just a warming up! I'll make domes for different civilisations, with various shapes and sizes, but I decided to start modeling with the easyest parts, to slowly work my modeling skills up!
Criogen: Paldies, meeginaashu arii pabeigt! Tu piedalies?
Virtuoso: Yeah, I guess your right, but I'm still thiking about weather to use cables or virtual power lines [the ones with cool light effect on them, like lightening]
Neble, Centavrus, Kaajey, Andrei2k, Peter C., JamesMK: thanks, this really gives me the boost necesary to continue the modeling!
