Hi all,

A strange thing happen to me (and several others users)

Start max5. create a sphere, put a mtl (so simple hey), hit render, it renders ok. Hit render again, then it takes a while to start, and you can see a big window appearing/disappearing (very suddenly, can't see anything, just a clash).

Any idea ? And sometimes we see this windows, max5 fast-exit after rendering.

Thanks for your help

I used the same steps that you outlined here and I did not run into any errors or problems. I think you should start to look at your machine to see if there are any problems that might be causing this.

Must be that darn Discreet Gremlin poking around in your box, I had him for a while too, but after numerous complaints and support calls to Discreet I was finally able to kill the little Demon.

Chances are you have a different Gremlin. Just give them a call and bitch about it.

I would start looking into your OS and system components to make sure everything is cool. Drivers, BIOS, bad parts can all cause flaky actions in software.

Yeah you're right, but all good under C*2, max4, director etc etc
I've just installed win2k sp3, and it is the same. I will try some graphic drivers, but rendering has nothing to do with that, though...

Thanks for the help

Sorry that I can't give you a definate answer that will solve your problem for you (aside from checking all the hardware stuff), I can only imagine how frustrating this must be. Hopefully doing some drivers & BIOS updates as well as some general system maintanence will fix things up for you.

From the sounds of it I have a similar system setup (program wise) as you (except I don't run Combustion) and I haven't encountered anything like that here.

I've got something simular. I get crashes in the render some times. If I boot max again and load the file and render I'll get the crash every time. If I reboot my computer and load max and file It works.

After I got another render crash I did a sphere test. rendered a plain sphere it worked fine. added a texture it crashed.

booted again made a sphere added a texture then rendered it worked. loaded another file rendered and crash.

loading a new file after a render seems to be a trigger for the crash.

that sounds like a memory problem.

Hey, I've finally managed to read this famous flashy windows, it is "open workspace". So it has to do with combusiton. If you don't have combusiton installed, you haven't this problem so...

Ok, I've found what is was. 3dsmax5 check combustion workspace by Combustion mtl, even if it isn't used. max4 did this the first time you launch max and that's all.
I've rename "combust_select.dlu" to "combust_select.dlu.ren" and now all is fine

Cheers
