thank you very much elmasfeo:) it's nice to see, that a lot of people from the sketchgroup take part in this challenge. it'll get a really hard competition... will you also participate?

actually i still have no idea for the grand space opera. if there's time, i'll do some scribbles today, to get warm with the theme... i'm not very good in science fiction stuff...:)

good luck and a lot of creativity to everyone....

Thanks for the post in my Space Opera entry Salamander!

I am glad so see some familiar faces (or would that be avatars?) from the sketch group. You are right about how it will push the competitive envelope. Im really looking foreward to see your entries, I have always enjoyed your style.

thank you very much guys! so here we go: this is my first concept-sketch. since i'm not a very good storyteller, i developed no special story... just the common "good guys vs. bad guys"-plot.
as you can see in the sketch, i'd like to do a heavy space-battle in the background, while in the foreground a fistful of tough members of the resistance is fiercely fighting for a future in peace and freedom...

i'm not sure what style i'll come up with, maybe it'll become a cartoony touch...???
what do you think?

Hey Salamander!
Yet another daily sketcher here!
Firstly I would like to wish you good luck and stuff on this challenge...!

As for your pic, I think its a good first concept, but I cant help thinking you have let yourself down a little here.

Judging by some of the work you have done for the DS Group, I would say that you have much better ideas in you than a traditional "Good vs Evil" cock fight. So I urge you to find that something within yourself and bring to the fore the stuff we all know and love you for...

Nuff said.

Cheers

The Ton

salamander, yours was the first concept sketch whihc really caught my eye, i'm very interested to see where this develops, especially as you mention a cartoony touch, because this is the kind of style i will probably end up using, photoreal stuff is nice and all, but i much prefer different illustrative styles. i like the feeling of your concept sketch very much

do we need to have a detailed story with our entries - subplots etc? i have only just registered with the challenge, i'll be coming up with ideas this weekend, and hopefully have a concept early next week to show

good luck!

This one looks cool too! Man I'm in trouble, you guys are all too good. I like the point of view...but one idea might be to show it from the ground and close to the camera on one side would be a fallen soldiers arm with weapon hanging off of fingers...perhaps a wedding ring or something to show a loss to their family, maybe I'm getting too sappy, but I like that kind of stuff.....anyways, good luck and I'll be watching you :)

just sketched a few ideas for possible characters...

thank you very much for your replies...

@The Ton: hi fellow, nice to see you here, there's a really good feeling sneakin up to me, that soon the complete sketchgroup is gathering... cool!
thank you for your compliment and the
constructive critics...
i have to confess that i don't want to spend endless hours developing a creative storyline...
i'd like to set the focus on the execution of the picture, on the characters and the overall mood...
but you're right, a good-vs-evil-plot is not very creative indeed...

@Dr. Evil Bear: thanx mate, it's a pleasure for me that you like the concept. as i said before, i'm not sure concerning the style of my illustration... on the one hand i'd like to do photorealistic elements, on the other hand i like cartoony/comic-like handwritings...
perhaps it's possible to combine both styles...???

@3DZukini: i like your idea to do an special element close to the viewers eye... thank you very much for the
hint... i'll do a scribble of this idea!

cheers

Salamander,
Thanks for the post in my thread and I wanted to return the favor. Much luck to you. You've already got some shady looking characters drawn and a nice layout in your first concept sketch. As for a story, I don't think you have to go nuts with varying plotlines. However you should have an underlying reason for why the two groups are at war and who the principal characters are, so you'll be able to draw attention to specific points of the final work. If you get stuck, relate it to something that you know and are interested in then mix in a sci-fi flavor. Isaac Asimov based the entire Foundation trilogy on the Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire. I'm free if you need to bounce story ideas off of.

It might not be a good idea to have your center of interest right in the middle of the image. Maybe switch the camera angle on the whole scene?

thank you very much guys! i hoped to be able doing a few updates these weekend, but i hadn't enough time left...

@Vahn: nice to see another bavarian mate :) much of luck to you! i'll subscribe to your thread, lookin' forward to see your ideas... [schöne grüße und bis bald. was treibst du denn zur zeit in wien?]

@Ilikesoup: yes, you're right man, i should at least develope a little background-story for the battle and the characters... thanx for your offering. if i can't get any good ideas for the plot, i'll gratefully consulting you... :)

@Lunatique: good idea. i agree with you, that this symmetrical composition isn't very exciting... thank you for the tip! anyhow i'm inteding to do several new concepts... this was just the start.

much verve to everyone with your concepts
with kind regards

thanx dgpilot, nice to see that you like my concepts...
here's another sketch, still rather rough... the place in the foreground is the stage where my characters will be acting...

Gott in himmel, das ist sehr gut!

Great work on the concept sketches, Salamander. I really like the first one with battle both on ground and in the air. I like the colors on the last one. If I had to choose from the characters, I would go for the catlike one.

thank you very much, zem!
[hey du sprichst ja deutsch, du alter schwede...:) wie kommt's?]
i'll definately do a concept, where the battles are raging on the ground and in the air. here's a similar sketch with the characters in the foreground. i'll choose the look of the characters later, i want to do further concepts with different races etc. it would be funny to integrate myself and my avatar as a part of the fighting rebels (you may see it as a homage to han & chewie...) :) :) :)

Nice scetches - I like the action and the chaos. Looking forward to see how the details of the characters and the design of the surrounding develop. the perspektive view looks promising (at eye level) that includes the viewer into the action.

[Grüße aus Köln und viel Erfolg bei der Challenge :) ]

[Ich hat deutch in Schule studiert. Aber das war 1991-1996. Ich verstehe doch hinterher ein bisschen. Nicht so gut mit die grammatik. :) ]

I also like the chaos of the image. Lots of things going on. Good idea integrating your avatar. I have a zillion of people in my image, so sneaking in my own avatar in the crowd might be fun. Hope you don't mind me borrowing your avatar idea?

Hey Salamander good job,

You also could try shifting the foreground action to the left and have the background action put it's emphasis on the right side. This way you'll have two focalpoints with the foreground taking most of your attention, making your eyes travel from left to right.

this way it looks like a theater/opera stage tough... i like it :D

wich isnt such a bad Idea....mhhmm....*think*...*think*..... maybe u could flesh out the characters in the foreground and make the background with the huge battle very 2d and flat ...just like on a real stage :D

I really like sketch 1 the best, it has a good blend of intamacy to the characters and yet conveys a sense of scale and grandure that the others don't seem to.

hello mates, thanx for the replies...

@Fahrija: i'm also curious how the characters and the environment will develop...:) at the moment everything is still quite rough, maybe i'll try an additional concept with a complete new idea...
[danke, ich wünsch' dir auch viel erfolg :)]

@zem: of course you may use the avatar-idea... damn, since we were doing so much avatar-stuff in the sketch group, it seems that i got addicted to...
nice to see, that even swedish guys are interested in german language...:)

@Art2: that's a good point, i will try to do a concept with your idea... perhaps i should also mirror the background then, so that i can emphasize the large planet...

@Vahn: i like the idea with the theater stage... will think about it...
[naja, in wien kann mans schon aushalten, oder? ich wünsch dir auf jeden fall viel glück bei deinem versuch... :D]

@Velk, Tinselsnips & Tranchefeux: thank you very much for your encouragements... maybe i'm able to do an update in the evening...

with kind regards

I wasn't too into the composition, I thought it was too static looking but now I think if you go down the "theater stage" look and aren't going to switch perspectives then I think maybe you should include a/some characters in the extreme foreground as well as a good distance away to create some sense of depth and drama, anyways just a suggestion, you have talent and I think you'll work it out so good luck!
