Alan Baars has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=4048)

Latest Update: Texturing: textures, basic lighting

probably not enough time to finish, but I'll give it a shot...

just textures with basic lighting, no fx

Had this image in my head of a massive structure built inside a globular cluster or nebula.
Just beginning to sort out the shape/feel/direction I will go.

It's an interesting concept, Alan. Trying to get the lighting and volumetric effects to work right for something like that should be a huge challenge. What software are you using?

paladin6303

I used Painter and Photoshop for this, will be using Lightwave for the final piece.

This is an interresting start, want to see the complex a little more detailed :D

More detail to follow, as the concept takes it's final form(s). This is probably more like an ultrasound of the final piece, want to do more concept work before creating models.

In the far future, Earth's sun is nearing it's death. Citizens of the Galactic Union have constructed a massive structure around the planet in order to transport it to a new star system. Two hundred years after the engineering project began, the planetary ark makes it's way out of the mother system.

wow I really like the idea of an arch transporting the whole world away from the sun... only question, if humanity would be able to build something that's aproximately 50 times bigger than earth... why would they still try to transport it away?

I don't want you to change your concept now, but I'd probably make the thing a lot smaller... so that you can still see the planet in detail... but there's some sort of a system strapped around it to carry the planet away...

just some thoughts... really like the idea, it's outstanding!

keep it up! :)

In the back of my mind I'd considered that at this point in human history Earth had long ago been transformed into a nature preserve planet, an act of reverence to the world that bore the weight of humanity as it stepped out into the universe. The act of disturbing the world was less appealing than building a structure to move it.

Just liked the idea so much that I couldn't drop it.

Hurray! Started modeling today! The election's left me feeling somewhat detached from this, but this is becoming an excelent diversion from thoughts of the dark future ahead.

I expect to have quite a bit more to post tomorrow.

Off to work,
Al

Hello,

Your idea is great but I agree with lehmi that your structure is too big.. I mean more graphically the earth looks too small.. and in terms of logic too... it`s strange to build a such big structure if we have the technology to attach just few big reactors on it`s axes for example.... but if I can devlopp your idea maybe that can be a super big space station... in this way that will be logical...
just my 2 cents :D I`m always looking for logic in SF constructions :banghead:
Also your idea on the first sketch talks more to me....

Keep that good direction

Thanks for the crits. Probably will increase the size of the earth relative to the transport somewhat. Don't like the idea of attaching anything to the earth that's large enough to support a drive system, in this age, earth is a nature preserve, so no permanent structures.

So far today. Not sure about the inset shapes, I'll take another look after work, maybe I'll change them.
gotta go (me too!)

No real time to work on this last few days, but have a block of time tonight to devote.

Here's where I'm at so far. Lower right corner is a render test of an experiment using extruded 1point polys as windows (with glow). Like how this worked out so no I have a process to create the thousands of small windows.

going to have to remove more windows looks a little too dense, more time later today...

p.s. carefull of the spiders in Wisconsin, got bit by one five weeks ago, doctor's stumped. no spidey strength yet just lots of little bumps (ugh!).

Yeah, definitely too many windows. I like very much the amount and placement of the windows from your concept sketch. I would stick to that. Maybe add a little bit more, but not too many.
good luck:thumbsup:
I'll be back:twisted:

Nice model You have here, loads of polys and great detail, quite original

Starting the escort ships, wanted designs that would be simple, like the planet carrier, yet be visually interesting. Here's the quick sketch of a heavy cruiser.

Here's where I'm at with the heavy cruiser, still a bit to go on this. Want to add a third smaller ship to fill out the cap ships, still working out the design sketch.

Another view of the cruiser, probably won't do to much more detail to the back of this, since this view won't be visible in the still.

Thinking of doing an animation based on the still though (after the challenge) so I'll finish the back later.

starting the carrier...

Thing this one's just about done, a few details to go. Was thinking of a prehistoric mollusk while adding details, this helped finalise the shape...

At this point it doesn't look like I'll be allowed to finish this in time for the contest, too many outside events draining time from this (one major thing after another). If I'm able, I will try to submit in time, but I doubt it.

Thanks to everyone for your comments and critiques.

good luck all,
Al
