Hi.

Time to warm-up… I made a rough of what I think of for the moment and decided to throw this in to keep the ball rolling. I’m trying to depict the capturing of an invader that is presented to the civilization’s highest authority.

There will be more sketches coming in… for the moment I’m hoping C and C from you guys.

Godspeed.

Great start!!

I like the pose of the captive... the twist in his body gives the impression that he's struggling and still fighting against the contraption on his back.

And that background looks pretty damn grand!!

Good luck...

Good to see you back into it cab, great first sketch, it has a nice intensity to it, you feel the prisoners potential desperation but also strength, and also the "masterfullness" (i hope thats a word:wise: ) of the conquering nation. If your last piece is anything to go by then i can only imagine what you end up with for this challenge. Goodluck mate, ill be following your progress.

Hello.

Another version of my invader’s lurid.

I’m having a hard time capturing the ambiance that I opt to for my fleet’s interior; i just keep on sketching until I ended up with this.

C and C please.

great use of light - the vast cold interior makes the the human (err...humanoid?) interaction more chilling

Hillartsympho
10-31-2004, 12:44 PM
I think you could reconsider the color of the ship's floor to help solve the ambience problem. the depiction of the even is very strong and cinematic. I wonder what it would be like for another angle/ closer/ farther away?

Great work, good luck!

The second sketch looks promising.

Maybe you can increase the window size to have the possibiliy to integrate a background scene like > a destroyed city > buning planet. The viewer gets an addional impression whrere this kind of hanger is placed.

The lastest looks great...

I have a suggestion.... Maybe merging the 2 concepts would make a richer composition. Using the scene from the 2nd image and a floor shot looking up at the red dudes. The guards and prisoner up close and personal to us the viewer. Also Fahrija suggested a bigger window with a view of a a destroyed city or burning planet .... :)

I know that this isn't close to your intent, but the first image, with it's slight radial-blurring effect (don't know if that was intentional or not), added to the explosion in the background, gives the impression that the characters are being hit by a shockwave. Just something to think about.

Here at the second sketch still missing some good atmosphere. The moment is ok, but there is too much brightness in the pic. Darken some of back places, create a contrast with colors.. Dark red at the back and blue or yellow where the sun rises. It would make it more spectacular.. just my opinion :)

Wow... Thanks guys… yes…combining those two concepts I think it really rocks.

Anyway, as of writing this reply I come up with some concept. It’s a depiction of an airbus terminal of a future citizenry of some sort. I’m trying to capture the mood of an ordinary terminal or port in a future setting… What you think guys?

Hey Cabertevon,

I very much like this picture. The cityscape behind the big ship looks allready promissing.

Some suggestions:
Maybe it could be good to leave out the front pillar of the window. I know it looks good as it is now but it divides the picture in two halfs. And without the front pillar you have more room to show something in the background. In addition it gets more depth. Think about it. :)

Its a very nice piece on its own, but somehow it lacks that grand feeling- your other concept was better material for a final, in my opinion, since the scale of people to the overall settin made it seem like a big world. This is nice on its own, but nothing feels 'large'.

11-06-2004, 12:56 AM
Hi Cabertevon - I'm loving that last sketch of yours mainly because it looks so fresh and well lit. It's certainly has the requisite scale, but 'depicting an ordinary port or terminal in a future setting' doesn't really shout iconic moment in a grand space opera at me. As concept art, great, but add a bit of drama! How about a parallel with the hindenburgh airship disaster?

Hello…

It’s been quite a while that I haven’t posted some update on my piece.

On the second thought, I think I find my recent concept is much stronger than the rest that I come up with. I have lots of modifications and addition on set for this one.

Now let’s get started… first I did some tweaking on the placement (Blocking) of my composition and put some initial detail on the lounge using pen tool extensively.

Thanks.

I like the new concept a lot. The architecture and ship design is very unique. I do have to say that I liked the concept and layout of the first invader sketch. Even if you don't do it for this contest, it would be a wonderful piece to finish.

Cheers.

Hi!

Another update of my piece…I changed my color palette and did some major tweak.
I resize the airbus to create balance on the composition and later I will put people inside to lounge to have steadiness.

What you guys think?

Thanks

Squibbit
12-02-2004, 12:42 PM
I like , but I liked some of the earlier versions more. The lounge takes much space...or
maybe it's that window...although it looks cool , it's so thick I bet it could withstand a
nuke. The previously grand-looking ship looks pushed back now. I'd put some of those
huge buildings back..maybe one or two in the mid-right of the pic... ??

Squibbit - Thanks for your comments. I am planning to have an invader inside the lounge that’s why I stretch it a bit in the middle and push the ship more on the left side.

Hey there!!!

Wow, there are lots of awesome works popping lately.

Anyway, here’s another update of my entry:
* I added some details on the lounge.
* I deleted the buildings behind the airbus and I ‘am planning to put sprawling view of small building in perspective manner.
* Currently, considering the idea of changing the airbus docking area.

Moreover, I have lots of ideas to throw in and definitely a complete make-over from my old concept.

Expect more changes… I’ll keep you guys posted.

Merry Christmas in advance.

Starting to look good.

Most important thing is that the lounge what i have always hated and thought of space hogger. Has been cleverly handled. It no longer harms the picture

I like the shape of the ship outside the window. I find it almost comical, the engines seem too small like a bumble bee. I intend this in a good way as I generally find sf artwork a bit cold and dull. It seems you have very little to do now .

Perhaps the captive could have his head pushed against the glass ?

Damm, I didnt know you entered the challenge this time around. Sorry I missed you all this time.

Your progress looks great, lots of ideas. The only thing I feel could improve is the sense of scale. Your previous concepts with the buildings in the background felt more grand in that sense.

The ship to me also takes up a little too much space. But don't listen to me. I jumped into this thread tooooooooo late in this challenge to give you such critiques. Good luck with your entry. I'll be waiting to see the final :)

I like ur thread, ur concept, ur technique :)
What would I suggest u, is that the invader is also round, as the ship on the left side, so there is really no contrast in the pic, and thats missing in my opinion. The pic is too equal on both sides and the canvas format doesnt alow that... I think u could solve that with wider canvas size or change the invader to something taller, thiner... but that just my thoughts :) I cant wait for ur next steps! Good luck!

Oooh, that red glow really adds a nice sense of drama, I like it a lot.

This may be the morbid side of me, but I miss the blood-splotch on the window! :-)

I love the recent alteration to the spaceship designs, and the fact that there are several of them in the process of touching down, which adds a lot of movement and implied story to the piece. One thing that isn't working for me is that far left small spaceship. I think it'd work if it were a different design/silhouette from the large spaceship, but right now it's the exact same design... But it's smaller... But it's more in the foreground... It sets up a visual conundrum, why is the same ship more forward but smaller, and the viewer has to make the leap that it's just a smaller version of the same ship and not a trick of perspective. I think that if it were a different design, it would be easier to make the instant leap of understanding: Oh, that's a different, smaller ship in the foreground... (did that make sense? Pardon my poor English: I actually am a native speaker but it's not even 9am yet!) :-)

Mike the Walrus – You are right about the “Far left small spaceship” I took it out. Thanks for that.

ChrisThatGuy - “The blood splat” is back as requested. Thanks man.

Sidchagan – Your appreciation is highly acknowledged.

But you know guys? As I digging on the details this morning I accidentally deleted the column besides the invader that supports the glass panels, and It exposes the background scene that appropriately suggest a scenery of invasion, i added some missiles flying around and it looks cool.

I am very much excited to show it to you guys… I know this is not a good sign to re-create my composition at this moment but I find it worthy enough.

Fahrija
01-09-2005, 11:50 AM
Hi Cabertevon,

that´s no problem with recreating the composition because it looks much better now - the new composition gives much more view into the background. The reflections of the glas looks very good and also the little thing going around in the background. Not to mention the gourgeous blood is back at place where it belongs.

The new comp works better gives it a more cinematic framing......I would also adjust the missle trails to be more fluffy and bigger at the beginning to enhance the perspective.....also just check that all your glows and major lines are going to the same vanishing point......cool stuff

walrus
01-10-2005, 04:19 AM
Ah, breathing room! I think the composition works much better with the column removed, the alien doesn't seem so crowded by the window framework now. I also think that the composition works better without that smalle ship, and the missile is a nice touch.
The loop of clouds (or a missile trail) behind the biggest ship is a little confusing and hard to read. And bravo for bringing back the ominous bloodsplat... Now just please bring back it's reflection on the thick window: That one little detail totally helped to sell it! and I agree with ninjaAssn: Some sort of alien reflection in the window - even if it doesn't show his "ugly face" - would be really appropriate.
good luck, it's looking nice!

Hi Cabertevon,

Very good work. Especially the blood turns to a real masterpiece. I can almost feel how it runs down the glas surface. :)

Maybe I would modify the smoke trail of your projectle because at the first look it seems to be almost a reflection on the window. I think it got too bright for a smoke trail and the engines of the projectile don´t produce such long output.

Thanks for the comment.....I need a kick to get mine done and dusted.....Yours looks fab...Just one thing I would look at is the purple circles in the image look too flat...here is a simple suggestion to make the look like more dimensional and glow like
Simple Glow Effect
1. Create a layer and using selection tool create a circle
2. Fill with Black
3. Keeping it selected and apply a Lens flare...105mm prime (others work too..experiment)
4. In Hue/Saturation....pick colourize and adjust to whatever desired colour
5. In Brightness/Contrast adjust contrast so the edges are completely black
6. Change layer to Screen...Color Dodge...or Linear Dodge depending on effect desired and the Area you are overlaying.....
Then just scale them as they go in the distance etc...
Hope that helps...
Cheers

I like the composition of your piece. The last few tweaks really helped the piece pop. The blood stains on the window were also a very nice touch. Best of luck to you! :)
