View Full Version : Seam in model
SunTzu69 10-18-2004, 11:18 PM Hi all, Well I manged to get all the vetices aligned in my model to merge it. When I do it seems to make a seem and also when i say merge border edges it makes some extra vertices and does some other wierd stuff. But when I say merge border edges it is cleaner than just having merge vertices checked. If you need to see images let me know.

Just a shot in the dark here...are the normals on both objects facing the correct way before you merge them? If thats not it, then try Edit Polygon>Normals>soften/harden to make the edges soft?

thanks for the help though.

normals is a direction pointing out of the face. you can see it from display > polygon components > normals (or somewhere similar to that, I don't have maya opened right now)
to soften/harden edges go to edit polygon > normals > soften/ harden

make sure all the verticies are snapped and merged down the seam. Goto edit polygon > normals > soften/ harden like everyone else said....
then if that still doesn't work, do a polygon> cleanup, and cleanup non-manifold geometry....
pretty sure that soften/harden would fix this.....
don't forget to add a value greater than zero in the option box. less than 180.
read the help file for more information.....

Well, I checked to look at the vertices in the middle. they arent merged...i thought i had made them merge when i mirrored but i guess it didnt work...i supposed ill ahve to do each on by hand....what a pain...;p

I happen to have a similar problem.I've been watching this thread but I still haven't solved it. My verts are definitely merged. My center verts are definitely at 0.But every time I smooth, I get a seem. It seems like there's something I'm missing.Could anyone enlighten me? Thanks.
I'm not sure this gonna solve your problem, but check that your model's nomal isn't locked.
If your model's nomal is locked,it won't be smoothed by soften/harden command.
EditPolygons>nomals>SetVertexNomal(optionbox),and make sure that the "Lock Nomals" checkbox is off.
If your model's nomal is locked, turn "Unlock Nomal" checkbox on and press Apply.:)

When all else fails, export as OBJ and import back in, often fixes stuff I have no other idea how to fix.

thanks for the recommendations guys. ill try that.
Mr. Stahlberg. any recommendations on how i can reduce my poly count and clean her up otherwise? i really admire your work btw. your like a celeb here! thats freakin great. :)
thanks again guys, ill keep you posted.
For SunTzu69
What I posted was for hazzadus, sorry I didn't write who I'm writing to.
And for your ploblem,I recomend to use merge vertex.
Edit polygon>merge vertex(option box) set distance 0.0001
I don't know why,but this function doesn't work with 0 distance.
Usually if you set large number to distance,it try to merge selected vertexes in middle(?) of these.
But if vertexes are same position and use small number like 0.0001,it merges vertexes in the same position.
You can make sure the result with Component Editor(Polygons tab).
(Try this test)
Open Componet Editor and select Polygons tab and select two unmerged vertexes, and you'll see selected two vertexes's current position.
Make sure that these vertexes are in the same positon and apply merge vetex.
One vertex will disapper and leave another as same position as it used to be.
You can select whole vertexes at a same time and apply this command,
if these sets of vertexes aren't pretty close.(It means within 0.0001)
good luck

Hey guys...finally got it...i had to merge each vertices by hand and then i did the hard/soft normals...and it work great...now my only problem is....how do i lighten up the mesh withough restarting? hahah
any suggestions on hair would be great!
thanks.

either do a polygon>reduce, or go by hand and delete edges and faces. best way by hand i find is to select a edge loop or a series of edges, and just do a delete edge. rinse and repeat.
One thing i noticed is that everyone calls Steven Stahlberg, Mr Stahlberg,
please address me Mr stallion151 too ;)
