So far I think its looking good. What is your story and idea about? . I think the idea just as important as the final look of the image. The soldier concept would be better I think if he didnt have the guns on his back. I really don't think he could reach back there and take the weapons out that easily. Just a thought. OK good luck

Yes, a story for the concept would be nice but it's a godd epic feeling in your first sketch and the bomber looks great. Hope you're intending to go for the blocky type of spaceships all over.

I love your first concept design. It looks like everything is in motion. I can’t tell you what the sense of movement does for a battle scene. I would avoid stagnant poses like the soldier unless he’s reading a digital version of Tsun Tzu. Keep going. There are more ideas that you've yet to show us.

The main inspiration is the D-day (WWII Normandy invasion).
Thousands of soldiers and hundreds of ships. A massive attack.

To me, show the target is essential.
So, this time, the target is the 'Vertical City'.

*note the soldier sending YOU to the battle.

Can't really see the target "vertical city," I'm interested in seeing your visualization for it. Good job with the convincing concept sketches.

Even if you don't have a set composition in mind for the final piece, you should start piecing together the elements of the story and image, as others have already said, that way you at least know 'what' it is you want to illustrate and 'why'. Those should be the beginnings of the concept. The 'how' is the process that we are all working on till january. As it progresses, everything will morph. But if you couple your strength in illustrating ideas with a solid storyline and purpose, your concepts will become a lot stronger and more meaningful.

But sometimes, if you just have a small bit of inspiration, there's nothing better than just sketching and seeing what evolves.

I'm anxious to see what you come up with.. I'm sure I'll have no problem following along with your imagery! good luck and take care

Giocele - nice challenging perspective, I like it. Also, the idea of a vertical city is an interesting one, I imagine they'd have some pretty fierce defenses on the ground floor! How about using a portrait aspect ratio to really emphasise the verticality?:thumbsup:

Very nice designs. Very good job in the bomber design! I like the idea of perspective rotation, in your last concept sketch "vertical city".I hope to see your coloring.

the side view of the vertical city. I'm not sure about this, but is a start.
In my mind, the vertical city is not a building or a tower, but a 'city'.
So, I imagine some chaos in the constrution. Nothing is much symmetrical. Many buildings over buildings over buildings...
Just like any big city. The only difference is that you don't have space between the buildings.

the colors are coming!

Just a color test. It's ok for me.

That's it! No more sketchs. It's time to stop to play and start to work.
In some days I'll post a line art.

that's my line art.
The original size is 33x48cm (13x19 inches) and was made with 6H pencil.
The line is just a reference.
In the final image the line will disappear.

I'll put a lot of details in the coloring process, like windows, shots, searchlights, explosions...

the first problem to solve is the main colors:
*I change the line-layer to multiply (now I can see through the layer).

*In a layer under the line-layer, I colorize all the image with this basic color.

the next step is to find the other colors.
To do this, I make shapes (pen tool - Photoshop) to separate the levels of depth.
Now, I have a clear vision of the entire picture.

It's looking really nice :thumbsup: particularly this latest version. My only suggestion would be that nothing is overlapping the structure on the right. Maybe a foreshortened flying craft. Just a thought. It's looking great :thumbsup:

I really like the way this is going and your use of perspective. Nice, dramatic angle. I'm looking forward to seeing how you are going to do that atmosphere in this pic. For some reason, my eye seems to want something in the forground on one of the sides, but maybe once the colouring starts, and the left starts fading into the backround my eye will be happy. Keep it up.

Hi Giocele! Your pic is coming along nicely, good range of distance, from the closeups of the soldiers to the grand structure itself. It's quite orange, but I'm sure you'll temper this saturation and colour a bit later! One thing, in the colour sketch you have the building getting darker toward the top. I'd imagine it going the other way, dark below and fading towards the colour of the sky the higher up it got. You could lighten the lower levels again if there were street level lights affecting its downward facing surfaces. Looking very promising though, love the sense of scale!

PS - You used the pen tool? Oof, woud have taken me ages! I'd recommend saving a selection as a new channel, much quicker in my opinion. Maybe it's because the pen tool seems clunky to me.

I had to disappear for a few days, but I am back.

I decided to start with the first-plane-soldier.
My process is relatively simple:
Brush Tool and smudge tool.
In the brush tool, I like to turn off the "size jitter", and turn "pen pressure" to opacity jitter and flow jitter.

I like the smoke effects. I am sure you'll add details to that later, but if I may suggest, I think it needs to be blurred around some edges. You could have more denser consistency around some edges and still blur them a bit.

Nice point of view : it reminds me some scene of a French author, Philippe Druillet, who illustrated the siege of Carthage in his book "Salambo".

I love your approach on this image and how crisp everything looks against the BG.. .makes the atmosphere feel very barren...

When you're finished with the piece, becuase you're creating and polishing area by area... you need to do an AfterEffects time-lapse comp of the images creation.

Very nice...the perspective is awesome and works very well. Just the leftmost turret's perspective doesn't seem quite right. But perhaps it's too late now to change that.

Insane detail and scale in this. Cant wait to see the sky.
Before you finish though, I want to mention- the face on the guy at the bottom should probably be worked on- probably the eyes. It looks just a little too comical.

And the sky... I want to keep it simple! I don't want to make "heavy clouds" or something. My work is already with too many elements and the "dramatical sky" will don't contribute.
But... it's not finished yet.

Great work, i like the structure and the paint of your tower and of your ship, my only critics is for me, there are so the same color the orange is beautifull but an other color for the balance met valor of the project with more contrast, good work

Hehe, just the character looked comical, in the sense that he looked more like something from a graphic novel than a real scene- again, 'cause his pupils are a little too small. Cant really tell at this resolution though.
I cant honestly say it detracts much though, it still fits. The new touches to the drawing are great- nothing to criticize here.

I really made some little changes in the eyes, and now, I think itīs ok.

I donīt wanted to make big changes, I like that "big eye".
But, with the changes itīs become better.

I really donīt care if looks like a "graphic novel", because if you look the high resolution picture you will see other areas (windows,etc) that arenīt so realistic.

I like that way. Itīs my style.

but, many thanx. The changes in the eye make big difference.

wow, it's looking great! I really like the amount of details it has, and some things like the big explosion at the left
my sugerence would be to make the tower darker at the top, iluminated from the bottom, and maybe change a bit the color of the sky, as MDN already said, to add a little more variation...nothing necesarily too big, maybe a bit of hue variation, or the lightness...I don't know

Well done Giocele! It's looking very good. I'd agree with Elmasfeo in that a slight variation of hue might well add something to it, a cooler colour in the distance near the top perhaps. But I love orange (predominantly used in my pic) and your pic has an intense, hot and violent feel to it. :thumbsup:

Hi Giocele

because of the great amount of work in this challenge I havent seen yours till now. Great work! I like the idea a lot. The big fortress, the unique door, there is a story behind and I like that. There are many works here that have lots of action lines because of the laser beams in the battles and I realize that in yours it enhance the compositon very well. There is only one thing to criticize: the main character, the one who is pointing his arm to the door, have a similar brush texture in his arm that in the back pack so, for a moment I though it both where the same thing. Sorry to talk about so late, but as I said I have find your work till now. Good luck!
