Latest Update: Post Effects and Compositing: Composition

Hi all i have been gone for a while but now i am back i hope i will be able to finish this in time hm.... if not i must say this was a good experience for me. Anyway here is my final composition i will stay with this, and now i must, must start to texture. The two bases further away will have the same amount of detail that the first have.

Comments are very welcome.

Hi this is my concept just a scetch to make an idea so this is going to be much moore detailed but my idea is a moving space town and the town is going to be the focus in this image i will add som ships around the enviroment but not to many because that will distract the focus on the town.

This is realy going to difficult for me not so much the modeling as the atmosphere but that is exacly why i like it.

Waiting for comments.

No battles for me:)

Hmm... having seen your renders at 3dstation I have a feeling we can expect some very high quality work here. Looks like your heading towards a smooth Homeworldy thing, but without the fighters and battles then... It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

Good luck

Hi linda...
I love your idea and the sketches... and what a great start... just on the main base are you sure to add this horizontal structure at the same high of the roof... I found they made it to louder...

10-19-2004, 05:40 PM
The 3 horizontal structure that compose your roof (like a pergola) like you draw it they are 'loud' and the can be a elements that aren't in according with the rest of your architecture. Until now is the part that you didn't modell... Eventually better to do round or bombed elements and thinner...

 hope I'm more clear now... me and english are 2 different things :D

With the quality of image i am used to see up to now from u Linda i think this is going to be a top quality work when it will be finished.
The only thing i can offer except my best wishes is a small tip i think. Because your scene is in space and u have this big station when i imagine your theme in my head i see heavy perspective underneath the station....just this small help ....waiting for more and for sure i am waiting your lighting techniques. :bounce:

Your building would make quite a statement if you were to come across it in space. The design looks ceremonial, the cannons a statement of imperial heritage although the overall feel of the design...the roof and turrets etc....ethnic. A British Empire Raj Palace built during the art Deco Period in space then :) .....definately Royal accomodation of some sort. You could go wild with the detailing on this one, not a problem with your modelling skills...rather envious:eek: . I wonder if you could texture it...not in stone etc as expected...but in fururistic space clad materials and marry old & new to this vision as a final design twist? whatever you have in mind it's looking great.

linda
10-21-2004, 10:01 AM
No i won´t modell the non visible part i do not see a reason for that for an image like this i am talking about interior of buildings and spaceships but that is always relative if you have a close up of a space ship and you can se trough the window offcourse i have to modell the interior:)

This is what i have in mind for textures as some of you mentioned the style is something between flash gordon old style sci fi with a romantic (the smooth round modelling) influence of an outerspace empire any way this is my goal and the textures are going to be mostly kind of old metal i might put some vegetation (mechanical or not i do not know yet) at Gorbazor as well will see .

10-21-2004, 10:29 AM
Looks great Linda, as usual ;)

I love the style of the spaceship, especially the flames (yeah, its a great model as well but you already know that.). I don't think you should change the color at all, but I'm not sure exactly of what style youre aiming for. If your'e going for realism which I know you can handle, you should change it but if not it's already excellent.

I have your thread bookmarked. Good luck to you and the rest of the swedes in this competition.

Good luck for your work.
I'm impressed how fast you came up with all this unique and original ideas, like the space station, the flash gordon like ship and the unlockable tower, in such a short periode of time

I was just wondering in your first concept displaying the whole scene: This planet or star in the back. Is this some sort of solar wind coming from it?

Because your were thinking if you should modell interiors or not. Your right, that it depends on the distance to camera, but keep in mind to show different sizes (space station really big, bigger ships and smaller ships). And if you have a ship quite close to camera, where you can actually see characters, that's the best refrence to determin the size of the other things in the scene, taking this ship as refrence.

ok.. I don't think anyone has touched on this.

Your very skilled at modelling but something doesn't sit right with me on your first concept. I just feel that if something massive existed in space then its design wouldn't have any concern as to which is up and which is down. But I notice your town is very oriented with a top and a bottom, which is a meaningless concept in space. Your placing cannons and defenses along the bottom half but a skilled space fighter would just attack straight down from the top. Just something to think about. Maybe a more symmetrically defended habitat or possibly spherical? Can't wait to hear your thoughts and see your progress.. cya!

Hi again haven´t got so much time to spend on this at the moment but soon i will, i manage to make a quick painting. moore detailed than the first one. tell me what you think in my oppinion it does not look very original or eye catching at the moment still searching in my mind to find the thing that is going to make the pic alive.

The space ships are the modelled ones that i pasted and painted over just too see how they look like.

Nice update Linda.

I think that the background is distracting a lot your foreground , is to bright . Right now its has all the atention imho.

You could change the angle of your camera a little bit to the up , to allows a better perpective of your main station.

Keep the hard work:thumbsup: and sorry about my primitive english hehe

u could put a gigantic space dragon in the pic

or extremely fat person with a starbase in the navel

lazer beams n explosions !

the wires hanging from the station could hold a giant eye...
it would be tied to the station with them... the people of
the station would have stolen the eye from a genetic
construction yard of another race and that other race
has sent fighters to take the eye back by force

u could make the clouds full of monsters . the monsters
would be trying to get free of the cloud... it would be
a prison , an old one and a failing one... sometimes
monsters would get free and u need spacestation
and fighters to recapture or kill the freed monsters

put huge amoebas in the pic , the fighters would be
fighting the amoebas(viruses) that in turn were attacking
a human (u could put a huge blurry arm in the background)
protected by the nanospacestation

Hey Linda, now that looks cool. One more thing just spread those stars litltemore towards
downside and then fade them. Also if you can give a mild nebula feel in your scene.

Made some moore changes to the sky do you think it is better. My queen....The background it seems still flat, you must give to a greater sense of depth between gaseous clouds and the deep space. You would have to give to more detail and turbulence to gaseous clouds.... more levels like the noise of 3dsmax... good work in progress

Hiya Linda, how are you?

I have enjoyed looking at your work, I am very impressed with you colouring. I hope I can get that richness in mine.

The one thing that I noticed is the 4th ship from the bottom has broken from formation..... the angle of that ship makes my eye go straight to it. If you make it going the same direction as the others there would be a flow leading our eye from the front ship through to the space city. Hope I havn't confused you.

Great work

10-27-2004, 12:52 AM
Im not quite getting a sense of scale from the last image. It does indeed seem a little flat.

I am at a lose of words for any possible solution to this. I could only suggest that maybe for the color treatment of space you should look at some of the work for the game HOMEWORLD 2, which has richly detailed and immersive ( and highly unrealistic ) space backgrounds. I think it might give you some possible alternative options for some of your color work.

You are making quite fast progress!! I like the "ships", but in the back of my mind all I can think about are SCV's from the game STARCRAFT.

Best of luck.

Linda... personally I like the first one (with a light sky) and the 3rd one... eventually try to focus you on one and try to develope more it and redefine the sky until you are sure at 100%...

I made a new background actually i am just testing some different scenery to see. I am really glad for all crits you give me to improve, sence i have newer been doing anything like this before.
so from interiors to a space opera is a big difference hmmmm............

DimitrisLiatsos
10-27-2004, 09:33 AM
Hey this look even better....if i can offer a small tip.....there isn't a very big difference between the two modeling concepts . space and interior, in a the basics.. Just do in modeling what u want to do and the use Wide camera angles with camera looking straight and a little up . This is for giving scale and grateness to your view....avoid cameras that are looking from up --> down and covering all your scenery
...it makes look small as if u were playing SIMCITY:scream: . Use that kind of angles only if u are between parts of your structure.
Finally make use of glow smartly and just about in every window , bay , excsaust pipes ..etc.

I hope i helped a bit...:) This is looking great and i know that u will make it even better...

hi,

The beam which goes down to the sun is great idea. Looks like a civilization that surely knows how to handle extreme conditions, in this case heat :)

Your last concept is looking good, but I agree with element5 that you could bring some of those smaller ships closer to camera to give more depth to your scene.

Good luck! Keep it up!

Getting better and better with each concept. you might try to put some mid ground elements (asteriods maybe?) think about the scale of these objects in relation to each other, and about how large they really are. remember that a window should be realistic in scale to what a human sized being would need or build. Also try differant camera angles, looking up or down at your center peice object, banking the camera.

I love the color schemes! ;)

Just a small update :)
Hi Linda,

You have a good start with your model. May I suggest you add some things to the surface that willl really give it the grand scale it deserves. For instance, apply the "law of threes" where you make sure to have at least 3 stages of detail sizes. Look at this shot of the moonbase from 2001 (http://cosmicorigins.com/sci-fi-treasures/chapter1/pages/2001-moonbase_1.htm). There you can see how that the door surface looks even larger because the surface is staged with small, medium, and larger objects. If you apply this to your model, you will not be dissapointed! Keep up the good work, I see that you are already an award winner! Congrats!

OK Linda Great Work

As I know You from your Site And All What You Have Done With Lighting..........
Your Grand space Hase Some Conflict Lighting ( It Is all What I Think)
You delet All Lights You Have. Then Create A Light For Sun With A Raytrace Shadow on Of The Ship With An Orange Color And Create another Light Down Under The Ship With A Blue Colore
It Is Depend On The Position Of The Lights For The Type Of The Lights
Then Turn on The Light trace And Increase The bleeding If I Could Remember Then Render The Scene i Hope It Will Help The Image
And It Is Not Corect i Think....
Hope You Dont Mind Of The Comment;)

You can try another composition working with a wide angle camera to make the first plane bigger in the screen to see more details and you can also use a inclined camera to see more details for above or below the platform. It will add more perspective and impact to the scene.

Hello
wow, very good modeling skills. I like the idea and the composition. Maybe you could try another approach to your model, how about seeing the buildings in foreground, and starting from there, see the other "cities" flying around.
Another thing that bothers me is that these cities align perfectly (horizontaly) maybe you could rotate some cities showing that they dont necesarily need a TOP_BOTTOM orientation acording to the composition.

Ok sorry for not making updates very often but i have been thinking a lot on my concept i hade a feeling that my concept had no specific intrest i mean nothing seem to happen in the scenery so i made some changes, i did not change the general idea about the flying town so that is goint to remain as it is but i added a big entrance to a whole new universe...

I've been watching over your thread since the very start! Dropped by to give compliments and to state that I really like the way you are evolving your idea, it seems like growing bigger and bigger to Grand :) ! The gate is a really great "evolution" but I think it's taking quite a space of the composition, just an opinion here.

Keep up the good work!

Great work: that's really coming along. Maybe just a taste thing, but i'd like to see some detail that made the gate less symmetrical.

11-19-2004, 03:19 PM
Agreed. It just seems so ... still. I think giveing it some asymetrical stucture will make the image more intersting. Just for me, the outer rings are just not working. I think there could be better solutions to those stuctures.

Either way great great work. This will be very intersting to see at the end.

Hi all thank´s for all replys hm.... stargate (don´t kill me now all of you star wars fan´s)

But honestly i didn´t even know what you where talking about stargate here and stargate there :) so i had to search on google an find that stargate from star wars wich must be the one you are talking about i am not a big fan of starwars sorry  actually i have only seen the first one that came out many many years ago.

And if i understand right the stargate in starwars is inside a building or ship my entrance (not stargate) is totaly in space.

Any way i am sorry if it looks to much like it but this is was what came up in my mind and it is going to stay like that nothing of my modeling are modeled after something i have seen now for the challange but of somethings i have might seen in the past i do not know they are just picures that comes up in my mind here and there.

i realy preciate all of your comments to make improvements i realy need it!

Its normal to remeber something , it is impossible to have a 100% new idea.

To me it doesnt look like stargate .

The story revolves the stargates, which were portals to other worlds created by an alien race (the original film had a lot of Egyptian mythology in it).

EDIT: Not that I think your entry is any less good, linda, cause it really is. :)

Here is the entrance almoste finished i do not think i am going to add to much moore details i had to remake the textures to a much larger resolution because of the size in the final rendering.

I also gave it a name The Entrance of Kaerius.

As usual all comments are moore than welcome.

11-22-2004, 06:46 AM
Yeah... I like this way for the gate, especially with these symbols... just one thing, I found a little poor the external circle... I imagine it with more details, maybe engraved...:wise:

But you're the chief of your creation... and you do what you want...

A latest question, there's 11 symbols... that significate something special, or it's only for the design ?

lehmi
11-22-2004, 07:10 AM
I like the look of the gate! Modeling and Texturing really fits!
Only thing I have to crit is that the inner red glow should illume the outer ring.

It looks as if both the red and the blue fog kind of thing should lit up the gate a lot more... would look a lot better in my opinion.

linda
11-22-2004, 07:40 AM
Lemog: you are right about the external circle in the beggining i did do some engraved details but then i was afraid to look to much stargate as people mentioned before because it also has ill see what to do with that the symbols stand for the 11 planets in the universe of Kaerius.

lehmi: thank´s i will concider this in final rendering.

keep on giving me crits and suggestions:)

new concept looks great... I think the texturing so far is looking really good.

maybe you can add ships coming in a out of the gate, like an intergalactic highway ..

Linda,
I really like your work, you model great, and, above all, i think you have a very "artistic" way of thinking, and you don't mess with minute details unless they sum up to the whole. And thats great.

One thing else: i don't care about the stargate thing, your's a lot better.

i believe you'll make us drop jaws when you're finished.

take care

Hey Linda!

First of all let me say that I truly am a fan of your architectural\interior work... I must say your mastery of sofas and armchairs really is outstanding :D , almost unparallelled...

It is also very refreshing to see you approach something as different as the Space Opera contest! Hey, I'm in the architectural visualization sector too, and altough I still enjoy (marginally...) lighting and texturing buildings, I do find jellyfishes to be a lot more fun :) (see my thread, you'll get my meaning...).

Ok, now for the crits! I really enjoy your general direction here, but I do think you're thinking too much with an architect's mind...

I feel you are concentrating more on the balance of forms and less on behavioural detail.
Your concepts, while retaining a harmony of volumes, lack a certain believability, which has to do with creating a direct analogy to existing mechanical structures... I find this to be reeeeeal important in sci-fi.

This has to do with real subtle things, like alternance of scale in details, positioning of key structures like engines and valves, and using real world references...

Pfffhiuu... that's it! Hope I didn't come down too hard... I do love your composition and color work, you know? :) (sounds too much like a lame compliment? Nope... it's sincere!)

There... good luck and see ya

I think as for the mechanical aspect you are absoloutly right, you now i have been driving car for moore than 20 years and i still do not know where the engine is hahaha..... not realy but almoste so i agree with you that i have to start to think different in this point of viewe and i will do some moore research.
