Juha Kämäräinen has entered the Grand Space Opera 2D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=3892)

Latest Update: Final Image: Bujercon Star Travellers

STORY

This is direct continuum for Bujercon Lab Incident \"aka MachineFlesh entry\"

Once goblins and humans discovered the alien race they were rejoicing the fact they were not hostile at all, but huge exchange of artifacts started new era in space exploring in the world of bujercon.

Humans and goblins received an invitation to visit alien entity worlds. As a gift aliens gave their GalacticStarTraveller ship to allied humans. Humans were asked to return to their homeworld with set of gifts inside GST ships.

But always so keen Goblins drilled holes for new maglev transport system into 4 huge landing rods in the rear of the GST ship.

Feat that made humans rejoice as they were able to enter ship in more humanly way possible as the other routes to the ship were kinda hard for humans to navigate.

Doing the drilling nobody would have guessed it would leave dark matter residue inside the rods and it would endanger the whole alien race. As a docking to spacestation would set up a cataclysmic explosion.

Will anybody notice this danger? How long does the journey take? Does it end into rejoice or catastrophy?

Hi everybody! Nice to see new challenge. Seems to be hard one. I wish ill do better this time. Here is what im planning at the moment.

I'm going with the same bujercon lab incident story i invented for the machine flesh. This is few months later when humans and goblins retrofitted recently discovered entity technology.

They were able to build their first GST*-class ship (GalacticStarTraveller) and started their heading towards planetary systems inhabited by friendly entities.

So this will kinda be a picture from a spaceship or a picture taken by astronaut in the space. I'll explain more when i actually get decent ideas in my head.

Thanx Paul!

Have you allready decided on your style which your going to use?

Bet you will be hard competition this time also! Specially that youre allready here you have almost 3 months of time now. I'll be waiting for something stunning from you.:)

I keep getting flashes in my head of certain scenes. What I'll do over the next week or so, is make sketches of these images so they don't dissapear forever. The first concepts you get seem to hold the most water...........more 'gut' than 'brain' at this stage.

Great to see you've returned for another challenge...and it's an interesting one this time...where to begin....???

I really liked your previous entry for the MF challenge and I look forward to seeing what you come up with...good luck (I did put lots of smiley faces on this reply, but they don't appear to be working at present)

Slightly more advanced sketch. Trying to add more elements and design cool spaceship. At the moment it really doesnt look cool. I got an idea that it would be equipped with solar paddles for galactic journeys.

Gotta try and learn how to draw spaceship. Since spaceship is what my picture is going to be all about. Everything else will be extra. Just to give it more epic look i hope.

I really liked your Machine Flesh work, Im looking foreward to seeing what you come up with for this challenge!

Good Luck!

your drawing skill and handling of special effects are both pretty strong in these samples. id say make many more sketches to broaden your possibilities. change around the compositional setups and see if you can get anything thats even more interesting than waht you have. Good job so far

Hi MustardWash im really glad you liked my machine flesh entry :applause: Good luck!

Hillartsympho very nice to hear something positive about my artwork. Hope you didnt just type that to wrong thread :D

Oh i was allready thinking of quitting when i saw some incredible masterpieces from some other challengers. Gotta be brave with these contenders im going to show you guys a small update... Its allready lineart of some. Usually i dont do lineart at all. I just mess inside the pic and change everything inside it.. Only thing i cant change are the viewpoint and perspective.

Heres an update!

ill post it as concept art

This is black and white concept mainly for the spaceship.. And some tonal area experiments.

Still thinking of more elements in the pic. But what could they be?

HI Falcor !! Glad to see you here ! You made a great work in previous contest and I wish you the best for this one !
Your third sketch is very, very interesting.
See you.:)

Falcorr
10-25-2004, 08:02 PM
Great to see you goli!:)
Havent seen your works here in this competition yet. Guess youre just making us wait.

Yes third sketch is what i like to call somewhat messy, but it really makes my imagination run more wildly than straight out thinking.

Here is an explanatory overpaint for my design!..

Falcorr

Here are some explanations for specific color:

Green_ mothership
Blue_ double barren moons
Red_ Astronaut (viewer's hands)
Orange_ astronaut gear

These are the main elements next it will be time for lineart..

Ill propably add some smaller spaceships later.

So the idea of my picture will be an astronaut looking at alienmothership in space. Which is about to take of to an important journey. Double barren moons just for cool out in space experience ;)

Next plan: Lineart!

PetriJ

Looking messy.. but good mess.
Yeah.. I haven't drawed spaceships before either, but you can't win if you don't try, eh? (now I don mean winning the competition. I guess, that's not realistic enough http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/grin.gif[And I'm referring to my self on that])

My sentences are getting messy, so I better stop kicking my keyboard.
Anyway.. No criticues at this stage, just keep'em comin, and I shall put more wierd words together. http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Falcorr
10-26-2004, 06:21 PM

Lineart

Enhanced some of my ideas, but i decided to keep it sloppy. Makes my imagination run more.

Also note that now there is an helmet visor outlined. Ill keep the visor effects on different layer everything else ill propably flatten in some stages.

Very nice linework. Its messy (like you've said), so its hard to make out what the final might look like, but it looks like something to keep an eye out for. DEFINITELY an awesome conept though. Lets see how the rest goes.

Slightly more clear shapes.

Helmet is gone for now.. Just to show you what is under at the moment.

My dual moon consists of smaller moon which is tighter pack rocky and metallic substance on the left.. and the bigger moon on the right is lighter and softer mass.

But the equal mass of the planets is exactly the same so they orbit each other.

Squibbit
10-28-2004, 06:20 PM
umh.. I think the right arm is at weird angle... most unusual...dunno what the
astronaut's doing tho so *shrug*

ideas... how about he's looking at some meters attached to his forearm showing
suit air supply , heat level , time , jetpack fuel , etc.

then put all at minimum :D

how about space walking wire floating in the space , other end attached to
the astronaut and the other to whatever u choose... or nuthin at all

how about that HUD I mentioned... o just remembered u wanted it to be an old
style suit

..put his leg in the pic and then some sharp-toothed space alien biting his leg ..

..a crack going across in the visor...

..some alien floating there before him reading a book of " 1001 dishes made of humans "...

...umm..erhh--mrh¨¨Ï'll get back to u later if I come up with more...

I did a crazy stunt and decided to do portrait type picture.. so i turned everything upside down.

So far i think im going with this one.. More grande feeling in this.

Only problem will be inconsistant lighting guess ill just have to think of some artificial point of light to make everything look like i planned for it.

Yup thats about it. OH also tiny amount of colors in the pic too.

Eh silly me. Now its in landscape mode after all.

I think the mother ship is bugging me somehow..

Heres some progress. Mothership is hidden until i figure out some solution for it.

I came up with more ideas. I was actually going to work on the reflection of the spaceman inside the helmet, but i think i scored higher this time :)

Dont know is the picture getting too messy? Guess ill have to adjust with colors and values to make it look less cramped.

Some astronauts enjoying the view from the big open space. (viewer being one of them)

boy, if this site continues to run this slow.. this challenge will be painful. Anyway.

I actually love the use you are doing with the sketch peices. It has that quality of artwork from the 60's or early 70's. Kind of cool in and of itself. I think the cramped feeling is perfect for the subject matter. It is inpending and deadly, all of these floating pieces, which is exactly how it would be in 0g. These pieces would then become deadly weapons in their own right making a space battlefield become more dangerous with every severe hit.

hey man..that's cool work..why do you say you're stuck on this?.....no inspiration?....whell..I'll say that the general black and white is noyt an advantage..I'll say you start bringing colors and you 'll see some ideas there on the road.....yop can take advantage although about that black and white technique from the begining and start develop something arround....with sharp forms and cuts.....cheers and lots of inspiration..tech

Wow, this is really cool! Watching the details refine on your image is like watching a JPEG res up from lowres to high, if you don't mind the geeky reference! Anyhow, it's looking good. nice realistic feel! It's the little tips and hints of real-life that make us believe more what we see. I really feel like its somewhere between 2001 space odyssey and Battlestar galaktica.

And all the sketches look really good too!

Looking good Falcor. I really like the contrast between dark and light. Definately on target.

Hi falcor,

I also agree to squibbit to keep the helmet. This gives a fresh point of view. reflections or of the bent glas would maybe help to underline the impression.

I like the design of your space ships. They have the right mixture how the curves build up and flow together.

The ship in the foreground maybe needs a bit more detail in comparison to the second one to give the viewer some more indication about the differenciation as regards the distance.

[BTW - your comment about the building reflection. Yes you are right about.]

Best wishes and a happy new year

Should i lose the helmet?
Help me out.

Yes, lose the helmet or make it really clear to see it's view from helmet.

And big ship has somekind big... fan ;) Try to narrow it and maybe it's fix perspective little bit. Don't know about you, but to my eye it looks too perfect circle.

Squibbit : Thanx ´1 for the helmet!
Impenetrable D : Thanx ´2 for the helmet!
Snotblow : Thanx ´3 for the helmet!
Fahrija : Thanx ´4 for the helmet!
St.Man : Thanx ´5 for the helmet! (btw mysterious St.Man next time you will joining also :deal:
 for all

Seems like everybody wants the helmet IF it looks good. So ill try to complete the background and try to figure out a way for impressive helmet if i do have time for it :)

boalid : Im glad you liked the story, but today i was thinking about it and im going to update my story hope you like the sudden twist.

ElFuego : My actual style would be called Fantasy NASA, but yes 2001 space odessey was in my mind. Hard to believe thats 4 years ago!

SideAche : Thanx! I'll try to add more colors in to my piece so it wouldnt look as monochrome. I'll try to improve or something.

now update!

READ THIS! .. new story!

This is direct continuum for Bujercon Lab Incident "aka MachineFlesh entry"

Squibbit

well that certainly would be one of the most original stories around here , if I could
understand it better .. .. how could the explosion in space endanger the whole alien
species ? u should change it to "endager the new alliance" or something cause
the humans' and goblins' carelessness destoyed so many aliens...

ps. still so funny how u ended up putting the goblins in the story!
also, nice idea to continue the story from MachineFlesh contest

Hey Squibbit guess i have to clarify the happening a little more.

Well you just have to think of enormous explosion bigger than supernova.
An explosion what would distrubt the space and time itself. Swift planets off their orbit to eventual destruction of 90% of the galaxy. Life and birth of brain entity itself has always been mysterious as they would be too weak to sustain such huge ordeal.

Humans and fiesty goblins would survive it by building new solar system. Artificial solar system. It would take tens of thousands of years. Brain entities would have just been a distant memory. They would have not existed at all according to humans which have evolved in the future.

And why would brain entities build such a system in first place? Well they never would have just figured out that goblins would ever brake it!

Almost like Titanic was indestructable.
But there is still hope. That explosion havent happened yet :)

Small detail to mothership.
I also changed the palette slightly added reddish hues to hilites.

You can also notice there is football stadium sized flag which the goblins attached. Humans are disliking it and are going to detach it with the machine on the right. (it reads "GOBLINS and humans")

To put it simple it just looks like giant diaper... Oh man.. Might delete it later on. Thats for you OKMER :)
Enjoy ;)

hey, i love the strong contrasts in this peice of work, but the background looks a little too bright, and at first glance you cant make out anything easily, only when u look harder can u see everything then its great so... i think if u darken the background, the already great peice will be greater :P

Hi!
I'd try to lift the astronaut figure up a bit from the background. Otherwise it looks really beautiful!!!

And a true piece of Fantasy NASA* for sure! :) *Nice term...much better than "kinda 2001 Space odysseyish" :>

I just have to admit things arent going to be getting any prettier than this.

I can only sharpen it up and add mediocre useless detail to make it look better for print.

So this about is good as it gets

hey falcor, here's a few thoughts...

I think it's a bit too contrasty, and the white and black of the ships really jumble things around. I think I would try to break up the color of the ships a bit, and also add a little atmospheric perpective with the large ship in the back. Perhaps a slight color wash of a warm color over the entire thing would also help unify things. I agree that the BG seems a little bright, although I like the texture you are using back there. The amount of detail you have in the peice is working well too Compositionally it's coming off a bit cluttered and crowded, but you can help this by pushing and pulling objects into and out of the background, creating more depth. At this late stage I don't know how much these suggestions will help, but good luck in finishing, it's looking good!

cheers,

daryl

Blackarts thanx for the awesome critics  I know what would help a Fresh start.

But i was just supposed to upload the final picture. Im not going to do any changes into it anymore. I have done something wrong in a lot earlier step. Which has complicated things for me to adjust. I didnt keep my picture smooth and easy as long as possible. I hurried up with my shapes. Live and learn. Some parts are in my opinion would need lots of work. I'll just admit skill wall is keeping me down here. . See my fresh works in the next challenge. Or if i come up with a way to host stuff.

This challenge has been very tough. Infact even harder than Machine Flesh! No excuses from me you guys are just too damn good!

Nevertheless this is my second best artwork and im proud about it! Dammit :applause:

Good luck Blackarts hope you get some sort of prize

Great entry. The coloring isnt very crisp, but it lends to the overall style- quite different from the others. The scene is well plotted, and the ship detail is nicely done.

Yeah - I am coming in way too late, but I am not willing to give up before I have tried simply because I noticed the challenge yesterday lol and if I work nontop I may come out with something wonderful.....if it were real paints I were using it would be like a week long, locked in my painting room, coming out covered in color....but se la vi(sp?) so....I love the story line connection and the tag on the front of the ship is rather humorous lol Dang goblins....Your detailing on your ships and textures...and man the steps you went through to get here! I can't wait to see more. This definately has a painterly feel to it. hmm Space painterly? hehe

First plan is blending with second plan, that doesn't look good. You gave the same shadows and colors for ship that are well under the "main one" . Also the perspective of the big ship is quite strange.
The second thing I notice, ships are monochromatic and the bg very colorful, I would balance it a little. Maybe som glaring engine fires or sth ?
Keep it up :)

sidchagan: thanx :)

Shinwa: Good luck with your entry!

tiger1313: Well my initial plan was almost realistic black space, with black and white ships. Some areas covered in this copper foil type of thing you see in space flights.
Alien ship was supposed to be slightly different what it comes to the materials. Side was supposed to be glowing slowly. Also there were supposed to be lots of windows.
Well the windows are in the picture, but they must be pretty hard to tell apart.

Anyway i just cant do much better pictures than this yet :D

MDN67 :

Thanx! You have commented on many works:thumbsup: Great you visited here!

Tonsen :

I sure have learned a lots about how to break my computer by tinkering.
I'll admit i learned a few things out of this pic. Specially how hard it was actually to do space with any realism added at all. I got really troubled because i was thinking about this chrome surface on the 4 big poles, but if i would have no star field or whatsoever. They would be invisible in space. Because of lack of surfaces to reflect. So my entry ended up more cartoony than i thought about at the start.

Hey last time i took 2 months just to start the voting. And another 2 months to get the results and 1 extra month to start a new challenge. So there will be plenty of time. I think

Im working on my next piece allready. I wont be hindered by time schedule or anything else. I can try to max out myself :bounce: . If the piece ends up any good. Ill think of way to upload it to the finished 2D works gallery!

Lots of practise with color scribbling :scream:

Thanx to you guys :)

Im so glad to know that theres 1½ months to the next challenge
Maybe ive learned something for it.

Anybody have any idea how can i have some edge on my artworks?
Am i always relying on too much contrast and i end up hurting peoples eye? Should i go easier with the contrast next time? Is my composition messy? There is no depth? Colors are from place where the sun dont shine? Should i go with accurate linework reducing the amount of detail, but making it more real? What gives? Why do i suck?

Please any advices would be helpful. Be truthful. Just gimme some critics.
