ok.. about the idea and story behind it...
I was thinking of going somewhere with the idea of deep space exploration and a maiden voyage ... Most likely a disastrous one...

Now I need to find the "do it in epic scope" button.

I'm currently thinking of doing the scene of The Finding of the Ilmatar. Ilmatar is the ship which encountered a disastrous ending while in it's maiden voyage. It was the first ever interstellar ship that was especially made for deep space exploration.

The scene will be a shot after several hundreds.. maybe thousands of years after that mysterious and sad voyage.

Ilmatar name comes from the Finnish Mythology "Kalevala" - Derived from Finnish ilma "air". In Finnish mythology Ilmatar was a semi-androgynous goddess of the heavens ... I thought it would suit :D

I'm still sketching how the Ilmatar will look, so what you see in this first sketch may change totally.

Great sketch and I do like the idea of referencing the Kalevala. I read it (in it's English translation I'm afraid to say - my Finnish is not up to scratch despite living there for almost 2 years) and it's an amazing piece of work. Any one remotely interested in mythology and indeed, modern fantasy should grab a copy - after all, Tolkien was quite strongly inspired by it.

Will add this thread to my favourites.

WoW!!

That's a lovely concept... the image is so expressive!! I love the blues and especially the brush strokes. There's some wonderful concepts in the 3D section!!

I like the idea of such a colossal ship which after so much time is almost an archaelogical relic...

Good luck!!

great start for that one, colors are so nice, are you planning to draw more sketches for that Huge construction with the big aircraft near it, i realy want to see them more closely and i'm sure the details will be amazing because you like to make huge nomber of polys in one scene.

Thanks for the comments everyone! Very much appreciated.

unitstudio: Thank you. Even though Ilmatar is just a name of the ship, I think it gives a nice feeling to overall scene. If you know the origins of the name and it's meaning, it kinda creates a certain depth to a whole event ... hehe I hope that made some sense.

JamesMK: Event Horizon came to my mind also, after finished this sketch... and thanks to you, I downloaded the "Artrage" and instantly liked it. Did the sketch with it

Designer2: Yep, more concepts coming up. Close ups etc.. I don't want to think about the polygons yet, but surely there will be some details :D

Squibbit: thanks! ... and your fish is coming up slowly but surely :D

m@: I will try :D.. cheers

Checking your previous work, I'm sure you'll make cool stuff! That detail (or fake ;) ) will work perfect with this theme I think (I've been also insprirated by your work, a bit :) ).

The sketch looks indeed really nice! (Artrage ís really great, you feel so much like real painting without getting dirty hands ;) ).

Best luck from Holland,

Here is my second concept. Shot above the planet surface. This concept lacks seriously some depth and detail, but I'm aiming for the image where Ilmatar has crashed long time ago on some planet. Ilmatar will be partially above the clouds and top of it will be snow covered. I really want to make it look massive.
Also, design of the Ilmatar won't be like this either, this is just an odd test which I did without giving it a much thought :).. still searching the right one. Same goes with composition.

more coming soon..

Hey there, nice concept so far. I think the crux of this image would be having the stark difference between the ship and Ilmatar, which could look very or rather extremely out of this world..both in design and in physics.

Looking forward to this. ;)

Dutchman: Thanks, email checked and replied :)

ymonkato,Gavin_G,unitstudio,jddog,terraarc: Thanks, appreciated!

dom: interesting point you have, gotta give some thought to it, thanks.

Rex3d: I still have not totally abandoned my first idea, but currently this second one feels more grander at least in my head :). It will have more depth and scale but this concept lacks both of those and really could use some scale reference too.

cipher:thanks, hopefully the next one will enlighten you more, I will make things more visible :)

m@.: cheers, hopefully I manage to find the right things from my mind :)

Hi!
Does the name Ilmatar have some connection with kalevala epic?
Actually Ilmatar is an old estonian name, too!
It means something like weather maker or so...
If we dig deeply in our myths and and tales, those might give a lot of inspiration!
BTW i like your last concept and the design of the ship :)
Great work! :bounce:

Thanks Taavi,

You are right, Ilmatar comes from the Kalevala :)

ILMATAR: A Finnish goddess, Daughter of the Air. She created the world, and is the mother of Väinämöinen. Sometimes she is called Luonnotar, Daughter of Creation.

I really love all kind of mythology and tales. That is one reason why I chose Ilmatar as a name for my ship and I think it suits pretty well. Though, In my image the goddess of heavens has come down :\

JamesMK
10-27-2004, 05:09 PM
Oh, the mother of Väinämöinen! Why didn't you say so in the first place - then we would have known from the very start what you were talking about. :D

Btw, the second sketch is lovely - very pufferfishy as well, so I just bet you're going with that one in the end :wise:
