The composition seems a little cramped...I think you'd really benefit from a more rectangular aspect ratio. There's also not much depth in your drawings. Try orienting the foreground spaceship or part of the wreckage to point towards/away from the viewer.

hmmm dude i dont reelly c that ur following the challange theme.. let me remind u that the man idea shoud b a turning point in a space race... the thing i c in ur drawings is just a plane/spaceship crash... i'll suggest you to add some story to ur concept and give some reason of y the crash happend... i think that'll put u in the rite track

Adrian.....................Just to give you another thought or something to consider beyond this point........................."the end of the Opal Kham"................my thought's on the most dangerous battleships in the Universe would be if it really was the "most dangerous" battleship in the Universe I sure would not like to come across "Whatever" was responsible for it's falling................;) ....................Perhaps you can show the cause or reason for it's end or destruction...................I tseems to me that whatever was the cause for it's end is the true "Most dangerous" thing in the Universe,not the Opal Kham......................Was it beauty that caused it's fall (Like Kong ;) ),or was it another vessel? Was it age and time? Was it a mutiny aboard the Battleship?.........................I beleive that you should add the cause or reason whatever this may be to the scene.......................Add more depth,add more substance to the surroundings,to give a better understanding and feel of this World......................
OK.......I am just here to suggest and help where possible,a good set of extra eyes ADR.......tell me what you think when you can..............I like the premise,the idea of a great battleship in ruins,a real event and epic moment,but I think you need just that little more something as I mentioned........just my 2 cents...........I'll be seeing you soon.:beer:

I really like your sketches, but I have to join the opinion of the other guys. It's not really epic in my eyes. The suggestions of Virtuoso are a very good startpoint to modify your concept a little bit.

Adrian, that's a GREAT logo for your contest entry! It immediately caught my eye amongst all the new concept pictures that were posted this morning -- the "eclipsed" final A was inspired.
Good luck learning XSI! It's a great program, though be warned: you'll need to dip into the available scripts (try XSI Net for a good assortment) to really get the most out of it.

Yes , i was thinking in use Softimage for this event but i not pretty confident about it , so i will use my main tool and do it . I will learn xsi with another project , with animation.

Mar 2075 The international goverment took control of the faith of the Earth. Only one faction of rebels still remain in the earth.
Nov 2075 The international Goverment make a plan to clean the faction of the rebels. The rebel inteligence find some traces about this plan and decide to make an attack, stealing the first interplanetary ship in the world with the new tech called hyperspeed . it will be a deseperate try to leave the earth and find another place to live.
This plan works perfectly taking the goverment by surprise , and trying to get out of the planet .After some months scanning the universe . The rebel find a little planet with one moon . And all the data about this planet show that it can be for the human kind . There was a problem , the rebel were pretty concern about the fast translation movement of this little moon and how could change the Weather in it. That way the rebels called the planet Climata .
After some years building a new interplanetary vessel ,the goverment found the location of the rebels. And decide to use the new interplanetary ship to take revenge about the act of the rebels . They attack the planet and then realized that the rebels have company and a huge army behind them.
The battle of Climata is just starting!!!
This is the story of my entrie with some info about it . I will put some sketches in a few mins
Im not a drawer and the final scene will have a lot of elements in the battle . Need to sketch the ships of the International Goverment . And i will let to the end as a surprise ,the race that help the rebels to stay alive .

Hi Adrian.......................I like your new concepts.I prefer the 1st one.I like the scale and look of the vessel.Perhaps you could combine the two.My thoughts are that you could have some of the smaller vessels from concept 2 fly by the larger vessel in concept 1..................Ok just my thoughts,hope I give you an extra spark for thoughts................Best of luck,and see you soon....................:arteest:
thanks for the feedback guys , yes , in fact the first image show the detail that ill manage in the spaceship . Ill design more ships to add it to the scene and these two images will be mixed to archieved the great battle .
Only one thing is missing the native race that help the rebels .

If you manage to present the shipwreck as a huge, ancient and grand relic of sorts, I really think you could end up with something of epic proportions... It might get tricky though, but I'm sure you'll pull it off. Best of luck, Adrian :thumbsup:

That's a promising start, Adrian. The ship looks *almost* like a futuristic assault weapon turned upside down, with maybe a touch of the Marine transport in ALIENS thrown in for good measure ... but whatever your influences I think you've come up with a clever way to convey scale: put the main ship on the ground. Look forward to seeing more progress!

Nice story adr. It seems that everywhere and everytime the goverments are hungry for power. This is Human race. Even we put the blame on these wars, inevitable the wars leeds to technological progress. And the mysterious saviours idea was a good one too.
And the Climata logo is elegant. Simple and easy to remember.
You`re not a drawer? Your sketches look very good in my eyes (I am a poor drawer, not you) and shows well enough what you intend to do.
I liked the first sketh composition and the second ship on the ground The firts one was a classic one). You are a gifted man and I`m sure you`ll find the right composition to your scene.

Adrian, the ship is off to a nice start. Are you going to do the detailing primarily with geometry or are you going to opt for bump and displacement in your textures?

Hmmm ... you're either using a transparency map to get the tears in the ship or you've resorted to Booleans (less likely, give the inherent problems with XSI's Boolean generator). There's another alternative, Adrian, and one I think you'll find incredibly useful for your scene: the scripted operator, "Shatter." (It's one of Helge Mathee's wonderful MindThink Tools, and you'll find it in the free version 2.01 -- along with some other extraordinarily useful scripts). If you look up Helge's site (I check the URL and post it momentarily), you'll find 2.01 available for download, along with instructions for how to install it. Anyway, Shatter will enable you to break up the geometry into as many pieces as you need; then you can move the pieces around to create the rips, and use the "move point" tool ("M" is the keyboard shortcut) to further enhance the damage.

Currently getting some very nice results by using bump maps derived from chip design layouts and connecting the bumps to the roughness node of a Blinn shader. It beats the standard procedure for applying metalic plates when you're going for a futuristic look. Will post the shots tomorrow.

Adrian: I think the model is going nice...i just think that for the cuts youre doing u can make a little bevel so they dont look too straight ...i know textures can make the trick here but i think that is better trying to detail those cuts as much as u can in the modeling....ok thats in my opinion....youre doing it well mate...just keep on the good work:thumbsup:

Adrian, did you see this new shader collection over at XSI Base? If you look at the screen shots, you'll notice that one of the effects has a very "techno" look that might be useful for bump mapping some fine detail into areas of the ship that have been exposed by the tears. There are also some good possibilities for alien terrain textures:
Oh, one other thing you might find really useful on your scene, Adrian: Andreas Felix Gebhart's superb Geodisplacement script, which enables you to turn a grayscale displacement map into solid geometry:
The meshes it produces can be real polygon hogs, but you can always use 'em to set up the placement of objects and textures in a scene, then delete the solid geometry and simply go with the grayscale map and very fine displacement settings applied to a less dense grid, so the displacement is done at render time.

Learning an app while doing a challenge is just a great way to do it. I did the very same with C4D in the Sideshow challenge... tricky but definitely the best possible crash-course one could join... The start of your ship looks very good :thumbsup: The cracks in the fuselage are not there yet, but I'm confident you'll make it work with more tweaking and so on.... :wip: there seems to be a wealth of plugins available to help you out by the sound of things. Adrian, you're making leaps with this thread. I like the concept of the broken spaceship, others have already expressed what I would've criticised, so keep going. Plus, as you see in your very thread, the XSI community here is really helpful. I'm really curious to see how this will turn out. So far, I like it big time.

Adrian, the engine looks really good. I'm guessing the shader network is just a Strauss with Dirtmap in the ambient node, but it's very effective. (If I'm wrong, I'd love to see the render tree for this, as it gives a nice, solidly metalic feel.) Keep up the excellent work!

Ah, Final Gathering! Yes, that'll do the trick. Thanks for that bit of ... um ... "illumination." :-)
Anyway, the modeling is looking very good, Adrian. I'm curious as to what you're going to do with the very front of the ship; also, it seems you've abandoned the gashes in the side of the ship -- at least for now.
I guess the biggest question is how you plan to handle the terrain. The geoDisplace script is excellent for turning grayscale terrain maps into solid geometry, but the meshes tend to be fairly heavy. (The poly reduction tools can help, but you'll also lose detail.) However, if you *do* decide to go with a grayscale terrain map, you'll find some of the most incredible source pics you've ever seen here:
They're best as regular displacement maps (use the "fine" setting, a low maximum displacement -- 0.2 or so -- and a length of 0.005), since the geoDisplace script can't really handle anything over 500 x 500 pixel images, and the Jet Propulsion Lab photos tend to run several megabytes.
About the gashes Michael . A lot of work is needed in that part of the ship , i have some ideas about that and ill do it in the next days .
About the terrain , my first aproach will be with Zbrush and Displacement , i made some test with the workflow between XSi and Zbrush and is working fine i think , i will update very soon in that part. But ill give a try to the Script , Thanks for the tip mate :)
the very front will have a lot of details but it will wait some days hehe.
I have ready the concept of one of the Assault ships that i will upload in the morning and work on it all the saturday .

Adrian, I'll be very curious to see what you achieve with ZBrush. Everything I've heard about it has been quite positive, and the number of XSIers who are using it now has grown tremendously over the past few months. If you haven't seen this thread -- it concerns some results of test combining ZBrush with project:Messiah -- be sure to take a look. The notion of getting that much detail out of displacement of 340 (!) polygons is really amazing. I wonder whether that's possible with XSI. Anyway, take a look:

Some nice modeling Adr........Will you give the vessel a worn and torn,dented,beaten up look? ........................I think some extra details eventually on the main body will be the way to go at the end as well......................The vessel has some nice lines,curves,and a nice flow................Looking very nice ADR.......Keep at it,this will be a nice project and entry for you........Perhaps when it's done you can take the Fun-borns for a ride in it then,,,,,,,,,;) .............:arteest:
awesome work you have done here man! The only thing I can suggest is to ad little windows to the main body (ship) I could also suggest adding variables in the surface shape, for example, split the surface in different seccions like you already have done but add more pieces. :)

Adrian, you're having the problem too? I even tried changing the security settings on my computer and nothing helped!
I started to model all the details on the hull of the ship , it will be full detail along the body .
Then a will add the structure (skeleton) of the hull and then i will add the last layer in the ship with the clean mesh that you can see it in this image.
One more update showing the progress in the hull.

Wow, Adrian, I had no idea you were going to go for a "Jack Kirby" look for the outside of the ship! Really interesting approach, and quite a change from standard plating techniques. It will be interesting to see how this looks once textured!

I love the camera angles and lighting in the last two renders, Adrian. The ship is starting to look a little "Borgish" in the angularity of these new components, but it makes for a rather interesting juxtaposition with the rounded form of the engines. Are the components in the detail work all merged? If so, I'd be really REALLY curious to see how it looks if you change the geometry approximation settings so the new pieces all get subdivided and smoothed. I think it might look more "natural" with the engines ... but it's only worth taking the time to try something like that if the components aren't just a hundred separate pieces.
I made some tests with the hull and see how is looking . The ship will have this kind of look when its finished .

Ah, yes, it's much clearer now, Adrian; thanks for the additional post! I thought you had changed course on the look of the hull, but now realize that "in the hull" was literally "within the hull." The problem, my friend, isn't your English, but the English language itself, which is sometimes frustratingly imprecise and lacks the benefit of a sufficient number of users to whip it into shape. Fortunately, we all speak the language of polygons and NURBS, which helps get the meaning across even when our formal means of discourse is found wanting. :-)

Great design mate! I do prefer the "uncovered" version of the ship tough... really gives it a nice industrial feel!
I only think you should creat some very small greeble here and there on the detail panels, to further enhance it's scale, but I guess you can always do it in the texturing phase... great job! :thumbsup:

I love the detailed design of the engine and Hull. good job. :thumbsup: Personally I like the version without the bars. Those tube like structure seems to obscure the details of the hull blocks. From afar it looks like streaks and scratches. Unless those are glowing neon tubes.

Hmm.......personally I prefer the ship without that strange structure on the side. I understand the pattern you're trying to achieve, perhaps you could integrate the pattern onto the flat surface of the ship as a bump map? Just a suggestion though, anything might work.

Hi Adrian........for me I would go "without" the bars........No question about it......But that's me......As for the details........I think you should leave some of the "Hull" open.......the smoothness will counter-balance the details,and vice versa.......they will contrast with each other better........Plus I like the flow and shape of the hull,with too much detail all over it,the vessel loses some of it's sleek curves.............It's like dark and light......they play off of each other perfectly...........Ok just my take here.......I think you have some fine modeling going on here.......Go at it hard Adrian........As I know you will................:arteest:

I've only just seen this for the first time. The modelling is good.
I'm just wondering if it's worth adding some sort of stiffening structure that joins the outer skin of the ship to the detailed workings inside? It seems to me that if an asteroid or some other piece of debris hit the skin, that it would dent easily?
Maybe you have some sort of force field system worked out?

Great modelling adr. Your ship is fantastically detailed. the only thing i noticed, and maybe it's because it's a wip, but the wall of the outer hull looks like it's only a single poly thick. IMHO the edges around the cut away bits need to be thicker. keep going!

I put a procedural from Darktree in the hull , dont know if i will use it , but your opinion can be very helpful.
Maybe i will loose some contrast between the detail in the inner part of the ship and the material in the outside .

wow looks really cool mate...i think it could work but maybe is too saturated of dtails...maybe u can erase some in photoshop so the texture is not that saturated...and the add some tubes and little wires and boxes over it so u cant see the difference between texture and 3d modeling...:thumbsup: just and idea friend...i know u will find the way to make it look super duper fine!

It looks really cool! But as Rattlesnake point out, it might also run the risk of detail-oversaturation. With the interesting stuff going on in the inner part of it, maybe it would look best if the outer hull/casing framework would have something like half the amount of detail, just to provide some contrast between the parts.

ye I agree with arturro... another suggestion, try to vary the ships outer hull with small and larger plates, atm it looks busy as it's all one size..
I really like the thruster rockets things on the side, it has a good balance between clean areas, and detailed areas(the center greebled parts)
