CONCEP I
background story

The battle for freedom between the Skaati, leaders of the United Intergalactic Planets institution and the opressive forces of the Katars continues. The Katars always seem to be one step ahead of the Skaati, preventing every attack that would give the United Intergalactic Planets a slight edge over the power hungry Katars; but their odds will soon change, a high level position official with the Skaati has been revealed as a traitor, providing vital tactical information to the enemy.

The queen of the Skaati is deeply saddened when the traitor is brought to her and she finds out that the traitor is her own son! Delegates from various planets witnessed the outrageous event

ok, so my first concept sketch is terrible, it shows the idea but it is really bad, I'm still getting used to the wacom. Hopefully this one shows that I can actually draw :)

The first character of 8 or 10 for the final scene.

That character sketch is strong. Very SW EI & EII in design. Kinda reminds me of the characters in pod race for some reason. Looks cool, can't wait to see more.

Niice character sketch. I can relate to taking some time getting used to an input tablet! But your idea certainly comes across with your "treason" sketch. Looking forward to seeing what you put together!

Love the alien design. It will be an interesting challenge to design a suitable waredrobe to cloth all the figures in the scene, any ideas on what direction you plan to take the wardrobe? Look forward to seeing the rest of the character designs!

angel
10-22-2004, 01:33 PM
thanks for the comments!

well, I do love SW and that might show unconsiously in my designs I guess.

wes3, yes I want to dress them all up and try to get an elegant look to them since they are supposed to be delegates from different systems. My strategy to make this concept work in the amount of time I have is by making just heads and hands for the different characters and maybe design clothing that could be reusable and sort of mix and match pieces to make new garments. Lots of work to be done.

the sketches are great, but I think that your idea is too story based, meaning that its too hard to understand the idea of traitor and his mother thing, I can't imagine how you are gona do this, but that's just me!

angel
10-27-2004, 09:16 PM
I know what you mean, Sky_one. I thought that even if you don't know the story it would work, it would leave the viewer to speculate, and make you think of why is the queen so upset. I think if I come up with good emotions on the characters the image can be very evocative without the viewer be familiar with the story.

angel

hey guys, thanks for the comments!

I hope I can pull it off, I do plan to rig the characters so I can pose them and adjust them on the fly. Also I'm kinda hopeing to re-use meshes to build other characters from, specially the humanoid looking ones, that might speed up the process.

Just some thoughts on the scene. . .

The background characters are all around the same height, may want to add a bit of difference here. The only other problem I'm seeing in this is that the queen doesnt seem "queenly" enough. Once again it seems to stem from the BG chars, their eye levels are all around the same as the queens. My eyes had a bit of a hard time finding the focus of the peice.

Possibly try lowering the delegates, or moving further to BG, and raising the queen above ground plane. Maybe add more BG chars, to give a better sense of the magnitude of the situation? Lastly, the queen seems awfully relaxed given the situation. . .

Colours/lighting can also add alot of these effects too.

good designs so far, keep it up.

thanks guys!

@ Malapropos, thanks for all the suggestions. The first concept sketch, is really crappy, and did it very quickly, it really does suck. I'll post the costume design for the queen soon and see if you all think is queenly enough. I do plan to make the characters at different hights, I really like the idea of moving the queen above ground plane:thumbsup: I want to make the queen look like she is sobering looking slightly to the side and trying to cover her face, what do you think about that idea?

Also I'm thinking of flipping the image so the queen is on the left instead of the right.

Heya, switching sides might not be a bad idea, but you might want to think about moving her closer to the center (with her son) to help bring them to focus. That way you could also place delegates on both sides. . .

I'd say sure about her trying to cover her face. It can come across as her being disgusted and/or ashamed.

I think I'll add some details to the throne since it kinda looks a bit plain.

keetmun, you are right, when making wrinkles and folds is easy to quickly over do it. I think I'll make some overlap of the fabric touching the floor of the throne and then leave it alone, specially when I'm still not sure weather to use a wide angle or a closer shot for this piece yet.

KennyM, thanks man!

Snows, this is coming along great. As for the throne... have you considered hitting it with the technique covered by the Hull Plating tutorial? It could add a lot of subtle detail to the scene without stealing the show. And, speaking of tutorials, any chance you might want to comment about how you tackled putting together the dress and those cool wrinkles in the LW Space Opera thread?

Keep up the good work!

First I want to congratulate you in your drawing skills! Great concepts! I also liked the dress you did (which program are you using?) I think your idea fits nicely, but I agree with the problem that you will deal: How would you express the queen's worries about her son in just one image? Specially if she is alien and has diferent facial expressions than humans (just a thought)
In general, great work! I will love to see some deep texturing!

Nikus, here is my response to Sky_one which answers your question as well.

I know what you mean, Sky_one. I thought that even if you don't know the story it would work, it would leave the viewer to speculate, and make you think of why is the queen so upset. I think if I come up with good emotions on the characters the image can be very evocative without the viewer be familiar with the story.
At least I hope I'm right, otherwise my entry will be toast on the get go.

edit
I missed your other question... I use Lightwave 8 and will be using Photoshop for texturing.

KennyM
11-16-2004, 05:38 PM
if you can bring the idea over to the viewer, the way you describe, it will be that which makes your image so unique & powerful.

it's the strength of the project, I hope you achieve your goal

Hey guys, need some advice on the color scheme of the Queen... I was thinking of making her all white as a sign of purity, then I thought of adding some color but this one re, white and blue might be subsconciously linked immediately with American colors; then I thought of making just the shoulder pads red and add some kind of pattern to them.

Do you like any of my takes described above or have any other suggestions?

Well, it's a matter of opinion for sure, but I think it would be neat to see white dress with white sleves and going up the dress and across the sleves are several interwoven red lacy designs. Kinda like the celtic weave designs. Then the arm pads could be red with the design in white on them. Just a thought.

> Hey guys, need some advice on the color scheme of the Queen... I was thinking of making her all white as a sign of purity,

I'd agree with all white (or cream/pearl/very pale butter colour) - don't think the multicoloured dress works as well. If you want to get some patterns in, perhaps some other item - a scarf/shawl/whatever could be patterned wiothout interfering with the dress.

btw - I'm in awe of the the folds on the drapery on her torso. Anything you want to say about that - I'll listen.

the dress is modeled by adding geometry and moving vertices
I knew that! You have gr8 art skills.
And thanks for the advices! I really didn't see that cheek-neck problem. I fixed that. THanx.

About dress... Your modelling is stunning! Maybe some pastel tones on mostly white dress?

I suggest a Gold color and specularity...It would show all the queens royalty, and would bold her from the rest of the crowd...You could try by making a general render, and then go to photoshop, and change the hue option to see many different versions of it!
Looks great

looks awesome... really nice cloth!

I'd probably stretch the neck a bit... that would make her look a bit more noble. Maybe even add a nice collar - something that jumps into ones eye.

I like the overall idea of the scene... stands out in all these battle scenes (nothing against battle scnens... can't wait to see those as well...)

Hi SnoWs,

Beautiful modeling! I thought I would look up something from my old library to maybe help you with the royalty stuff. This info comes from a really awesome book, titled "Heraldry: Sources, Symbols, and Meaning" by Ottfried Neubecker, McGraw-Hill Book Co. (UK).

There is a reason for all of the colors in (and on) all of the crowns, shields, armor, and flags of Europe (and even our own flag colors). The aspect and choice of colors for flags also stems from Heraldry. My hope in doing this, is to inspire you with ideas for the symbology in your scene. This info has helped me to balance the symbolism of colors for planetary flags and apparel of the characters in my own stories and concepts. May it do the same for you. :) Keep up the awesome work.

Gold= Yellow = OR

Your original concept is a really great idea. You will be able to show off some cool creatures with a space background. Your model of the queen looks really nice. You might want to put more detail into the throne, although all the detail in the queens clothing does keep ones attention on her. Great project so far.

P.S. Also a big Mazinga fan :)

angel
11-22-2004, 03:17 AM
lehmi, not sure about stretching the neck but I'll give it a go and see what happens

Daniel, WOW, thanks for sharing all that info! I'm sure it'll help others as well. I added gold and silver to the queen, I also changed the throne's back rest to blue. Also it really can't be seen in the plain screen shot very well but I also added a red gemstone right on the middle of the chest (here looks like a grey oval) all the beads are gold with a few in the back that are silver.
I'll update the pic soon, it's rendering now.

Novacaine, I'm going to add a pattern texture on the long bars on the sides of the throne and also there are going to be 2 royal guards, one on each side, hopefully that will help.
Oh, if you are a Mazinga fan look what I was cooking, I had to stop to work on the challenge tho...:)

I'm using Lightwave 8 and yes, it is polygon modeling converted to Subdivision Surfaces. I usually mix both types of geometry in my models depending on how they are going to be seen in the render and their purpose. I use diferent techniques to model including box modeling but my favorite is what most people call "point extend" where you pick the edges (or points making the edges of an object) and extrude them so you keep growing your geometry until you have the shape done. If you go to page 7 post #100 you can find a link to a mini tutorial I wrote on how I go by making folds in clothing, check it out and let me know what you think.

Thanks again for the encouraging words.

no, seriously, I liked the character as is, that change might take more time than I'm willing to spend now (with the clothing and all) I'll put it as a low priority change, I just started modeling the brainiac robot and don't want to interrupt the session.

Hi there, nice work overall.
There's nothing wrong in liking nice curves ;) I think the problem is that they look quite fake by keeping this shape in a cloth that looks quite loose, and it makes a character that could be beautiful, look a bit vulgar. I allowed myself to do a little paintover for a suggestion :

Very nice (.)(.) SNoWs! :O The change seems to draw our attention to her face now. Good balance. Her form seems good now - her posture is improved (and something about her is quite attractive, or is it that I like a girl who knows what to do with webbed hands...?!)

I worked with an old stop motion animator for a few years whose inspiration was Willis O'Brien and Harryhausen. He made some of the best custom armatures and latex mold casts I've ever seen. He always said - "never show a puppet not moving to your audience (I.e. Stop Motion character). I've always hoped that the 3D realm would begin displaying their puppets as "posed." I think it would do our craft justice for all of us to come together, do this, and set the precedent. Always show a character in jesture, pose, or in action.

I look forward to seeing Aqua smiling at me, perhaps making me wonder if she wants me to move closer, or is she thinking she would like to do away with me?

Very inspiring indeed Daniel. If I didn't have this challenge deadline I would start doing that right now but I'm just trying to crank out as many models as possible as fast as possible, texturing and posing will start after I model the rest of the characters, I don't think I'll make all the designs I sketched out but I'm hoping to make most of them. Julez4001, for all the clothes I have added a small bump, and an incident angle gradient on the luminosity channel.

yes leave them black, adds some mystery to the character.
I would turn up the specularity a little tho, now they shine like faceted bugs-eyes like flies bees etc, you need a more wet look I think.

KennyM

either give hims some reddish or brownish darkening on the head, lightening to what you have now in the facial area.

male and female colour variationis are usually just some darker details and some additional pattern.

nemirc
12-26-2004, 07:32 PM
You could make more drastical changes on the body of the characters. For example longer neck for the female, increase the underjaw... you could even make the female bold while the male has long hair :buttrock:

as for the texturing, how about you make those "spots" light brown while the rest of the face is dark brown? I mean, switch the lightbrowns with darkbrowns and viceversa (leaving the front of the neck and the jaw as they are now). Just an idea :deal:

My entry (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=190690) :deal:

angel
12-27-2004, 12:35 AM
Yep, I think I'll try darkening the top of the head. The female is more pale than the male. Check the female pic, I made her head thinner the flaps are smaller and the neck is longer and slimmer, the hair is longer and the eyebrows are curvy at the top. In general the male is bulkier.

Man, your mermaid girl's looking really good, I can see the small details like the skin pigments and stuff. But our brown friend here seems to be less detailed than mermaid girl! I guess it really depends on how far away brown friend is from the camera. if he'll be far away then that should suffice very well.

I would suggest putting some bump and specular. I made the mistake of neglecting my specular...

Cheers! Keep up the great work!

Hi Climax! I'm glad you like my work  keetmun, thanks for the c&c. I'll add some more specular to this guy and see what happens, I applied a velvet shader to get the illusion of very short fur. I'm still not quite sure where he'll be standing but I dbout he'll be very close to the camera. I want the queen, her guards and her son to be the main focus. angel
01-09-2005, 06:18 PM
Thanks tzktime, it is 3d. is nothing fancy really; It is done layering spheres (each one slightly larger in order) with diferent textures, land, then clouds and then an atmosphere sphere with a colored incidence angle gradient and glow activated. There are lots of Lightwave tutorials out there for this. I'm not sure how to go about it in other programs but that's the general idea. BTW I used "diffuse sharpness" in LW on every texture to get that night/day transition.

This is where I learned the technique from a while back (tutorial dated 2001)

Amazing job. I just don't like a one small thing here. The beautiful blue/green alien lady has quite similar pose to he standing next to her dude. It doesn't look good. I would change the pose of the beauty. Maybe move her closer to the queen, as she was talking something directly to the queen... don;t know, but in my opinion her pose is to be changed.

hi, the composition look just great, but I think that the room is too simple - maybe more organic / round shapes wold help, it should look more splendid

also I`m curious for the lighting

arturro is right... they kinda looked like they were doing some sort of synchronized dancing to me

other than that, outstanding job :buttrock:

hectic: Maybe you are right but we also need to consider the specific architecture to that civilization. The queen looks technically human and I don't think that a court room that looks like jabu-jabu's belly (from Ocarina of Time) would be believable...
I do believe that the room could use some ornamental textures though.

Hey guys thanks for all the comments, exactly the type of feedback I was hopeing to get.

I'll change the fish chick's pose, arturro is right, too close to the one standing next to her.
I also want to change the "elephant" creature on the left, he should be talking with the fat guy. Need to texture the robot's brain and I need to finish the Queen's son.

I'm starting to think I'll be able to finish on time Climax:thumbsup:

I'll post an update of the poses soon but first a test render....

Here I changed the camera angle slightly. Also changed the poses that needed tweaking. no more sync swimmin ;) Also cahnaged the position of the robot and added some room for some decorations on the top edges of the walls... what do you guys think?

It looks better. Robot looks much better. But the beauty looks uninteractive now. Maybe try to move her tourso forward and turn her hed into the right, so that she listens what the tall guy says..?

I'll try moving her torso forwards, but I have her looking in the geral area where the traitor will be standing, when I place the guy in the scene might change several things in the composition... I better finish him next.
