Marcin Kurczewski has entered the Grand Space Opera 3D.

Challenge Page (http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/view_entries.php?challenger=3829)

Latest Update: Lighting: Composition test 4

Scene still looks a bit too happy but at least all details are visible. Tempus fugit so I'll rather leave playing with colours to postproduction phase and finalize environment (as well as whales texturing).

Greetings to all of You. I am a bit bored with "super high tech hyper" theme so I've decided to go for a bit more archaic approach. Flying ships- sure, but I want them to have look and feel of Venetian galera's from XIV-XVII c. That moves me towards Lepanto battle but- to avoid jumping into politics- let it be a planet Lepanto Secundus where two mighty armadas... blah blah blah.

Here's updated version of main ship's body- of course they will all vary but I got to start from something so why not fom main ship in scene. I tried to blend two styles- modern, kind of organic and old one, based on blueprints of sail ships. I am not sure about materials but- hey, there is still some time left ;).

Yeah, I am getting sucked into it- it's a nice feeling when You feel that You already know how it should look like and You draw and discover new details. Most pleasant part I guess...

Of course drawing is a mirror but I hope it is not a huge crime- drawing the same once again would make sense in ilustration but that one is just a blueprint so I think I'll leave it as it is.

I really like that your ship design isn't the typical lofted cube I'm used to seeing in 3d space-type work.

I'm glad You like it. Now I'll jump into modeling for a moment, then- having sample ship ready I'll try setting up a shot and then go back to design of environment. What I have in mind are two such a ships fighting side to side, with ropes and hooks connecting them, canons shooting etc. and everything over green tropical jungle and on a clear blue sky. Probably I'll try some explosion effects on one from the ships but - honestly speaking- I am bit affraid of it, not because of problems with flames and smoke but because of necessity of showing interior of ripped of ship. Anyway- we will see. Thanks for all comments and good luck to all of You, guys.

Thanks for all comments guys- it helps a lot.

Before I'll dive into modeling details I wanted to check if my idea of composition will play well with shapes like that so I've modeled quick dummy of ship's body, duplicated it and arranged into position in which I want to have two main ships in the scene. Then I've changed camera to 20 mm one to get longer shots and played around for a moment to see what possibilities are there. Right now I am in doubt choosing between 2nd and 4th option- 2nd gives opportunity of displaying explosion of "falling down" ship, on the other hand in shot 4 winner of this duel will look more "heroic" with bow and galion high abowe point of view. Other two are not bad as such but I do not think they are proper for that type of ilustration- 1 allows to show entire scene in detail but lacks "movement"- is very horizontical and kind of boring, 3rd- although quite nice and dynamic - does not allow to show off all details of ships. I guess I'll have to do it once again with sails on.

I'm sure you've been told this before but presenting your concepts that way is brilliant. Even outputing the modeling sessions on parchment, geat idea. The "old world" style ships are a great change from the norm. The design look very good.

I had to make some modifications in design- most important of them is making ship's body a bit taller to acomodate cannon placements. Right now, having main shape I can start adding details first to undamaged, then to one that will be shown as blowing up.

Looks very promising and the modelling looks very clean. Nice way to display the work kind of reminds me of anatomical drawings done by Leonardo Da Vinci. It would be excellent if the final image bore more of a line drawing resemblance as if it were a catalogued military history engagement.

Some additional details added. Thanks to all of You guys for comments. I have not seen Treasure Planet so far (I know it's a shame but... I just had no time) but I am honored with comparison, although I will go in direction of Duth marine paitings rather then cartoon art. In any case- untill I'll go to texturing phase I am going to put all previevs in this manner- seems that it is appealing to more people then just me (thank's for warm words once again) so- why not.

@ Borro- it's simply a photo of old paper. No secret here.
@ Cipher- nay, there will be no water in the scene- these ships are supposed to be flying- sails will be kind of buterfly wings. I hope it will be a bit more visible when models will be ready. . I am thinking about tropical forest somewhere 500 ft below. People and ships falling down and so on...

How far can a Viking ship throw a goat? 10 parsecs if the solar winds are right. Only joking, its a quote about the Vagyr Goat Throwing Longboat wich never made it into the game Homeworld 2 as an easteregg.

Mind you i like the style of presentation, it most fitting with the type of ships. And off course it brings memories of the sea-battles of the past when these ship would engage each other at point-blank range and in huge numbers.

Battles wich stood model for a lot battles fought in Space Opera's

That's how main masts are going to look like. Of course it does not mean I've finished with body's geometry but just to have full picture I'd like to have all main elements at least visible. I am glad with "dragonfly head" effect- I think it adds some character to ship. Now- time for wings/sails. I am bit affraid as they will determain to which degree my concept was right. We will see...

Very interesting. I've always envied those who're good with rulers and straight lines. I think they've declared war on me. Ah well, nice design here, I like the rounded part in the farward area of the ship. Is that an antennae on the top of the mast? (Did I spell that word right?)

I am really glad that someone is going to incorporate ancient forms. I'm not really digging the dome-bulge, though. Instead of melding old work with brash new forms, have you thought about taking the old forms and providing contemporary styling cues / terminations / ornamentation to them?

Think of the Prowler automobile. The form is distinctly 1930's or 40's, yet the finishing detailing is undoubtedly turn of the millennium.

Will you be trying to put some mock-ancient architecture into the composition at all? That would be the icing on the cake!

I like comp. number 2. It is more dynamic.

As for the use of old and new, really like the direction your going. I am working on a similar line. I think having some referance to actuall design elements from the past breaths realism to the composition.

buena suerte amgio!!

What a releif! What a welcome change from the same old scifi fodder. I am really enjoying the presentation. So pleaseant, the background paper really exemplifies the old stylings. That juxtaposed with a futurized Galera... wonderful

It took some time but fortunately or not after 10 years of work I am finishing off my new house and it takes hell of the time. Here is rough model with most of elements in place. Now development will go by two paralel paths- one is finishing off this version, with all baroque details, figureheads, paintings, banners and so on, other one is basing on this rough form prepairng second ship in moment of explosion. I've found some really good references so I hope I'll manage to handle it propertly.

I've partially blown up one ship and assembled scene to see on which details should I put more attention and which ones might be left as they are. I think I'll go for a version on the right as it better depicts situation, without getting elements tangled (although I'm going to separate ships bit more to get space for canon' salvo smoke between them).

Marcin, when I saw your sketches up on the "recent entries" page, my first thought was that Leonardo DaVinci is alive and well and living in Lodz! Excellent to see such original thinking on display -- both in the conception of your ships and your presentation. I look forward to seeing more of this world you're creating; keep up the outstanding work!

Wait, did I hear that right? I thought I heard that you finished building a house. Having just recently bought a 50 year old house that statement is not lost on me.

Everthing is looking very good. The sails might be a little stiff. Don't know if they are supposed to be rigid or not since it is in space.

I know it is a bit early to start texturing (there is still plenty of modeling to be done) but texturing damaged ship would be a nightmare with all dislocated elements so I've decided to prepair at least main materials and having all of them set up take care about explosions.

Inbetween modeling damaged galera and painting winning one I wanted to take a look at cannon salvo effect. Here is first attempt- I think that with fire added and a bit reduced space between side of the ship and dense smoke it should make proper impression.

It's been a while... After playing with original idea for some time I get bored with it- after all whats so special in fighting ships ? Then strange tought appeared- ok, I got flying ships for one side of conflict- why other side should not fly on fishes (whales in that case). I quickly modeled a whale, added some kind of harness to it and tried assembling- works perfectly and allows me for another- not typical for "huge stories" wide, horizontical composition. I got little time and a lot to do (I got all elements textured but from that to ready scene long way) so it will be tough and even if I'll finish I'll be probably too far from original idea of contest anyway but- hey- it's so much fun to play with new ideas- I can not resist it when making something just for my own pleasure(suffering very strict rules at work).

Flying whales are always a tentation! Been there (mine are eyeless and have back flippers, but anyway)... The tail looks a little bit small, you might want to scale it a bit. Good work, and I know it's late but, excellent scketches!

Just average daylight to test assembly of ships (without whales for a while :)) I am not glad with particles and fire burning inside broken ship is not visible. I re-designed ships a bit, I guess I got to work on textures to make them look different.

Another one, this time only with primary lights and ambient- all fill ups are switched off. I believe that's direction in which I'll try to go, maybe with a lightsource behind sails to give it bit more drama.
