my idea

Huge space war between 2 factions on a far away planet the Reyach and Phealtah
involves hundreds of small spacecraft / battleships / cruisers / cariers

Think "Homeworld style" with a touch of voutlooz :)
all concepts will be of my own hand and also the models / textures / lightning

that makes it posible to toy with the composition when im not satisfied .

MROGER
10-18-2004, 09:37 PM
Not very important to make a beautifull drawing.
You can help you with a fast 3D design with some basic primitives (like boxes, cylinders etc), you make your composing then you make a screen shot, and redraw on it (print or photoshop etc) to add details and colors.
After that you're ready to start modeling...

ill work on the trail tonigh

once thats rounded up
ill do some asaultcraft
same manner
split them up in groups
spawn them on pflow
trail them by pflow

then i hope to get some nice squadrons of 5/6 ships
i need to devide it into about

300/6 = 50 splines
that means the squadrons wil all have a different flight path
and they are animated already :)
so i can pick out a moment in time / toy with it etc

then build upwards

freighters
cariers
destroyers
cruisers

and then i guess i need to devise the even worse enemy :)

woohoo reached the 300 post mark :P

10-22-2004, 06:36 AM
I like the concept and the initial image is shaping up. It would be cool if the glowy trails tapered off and then dissipated completely, instead of the glow staying the same width along the entire length. Also I think the ones that form more sinuous arcs are the most interesting. If you spread them out a bit more you might get some intersting shapes forming.

Archetype
10-22-2004, 07:14 AM
its quite hard to taper it of i have too see if i can animate the natural aging ..

doubt it though
if anyone knows a way to give glow a ceraint falloff will you please share? :)

it uses a gradient map to falloff to Black .
i need to shorten the strech
that will probable fix it since it fall of to black wich has no natural glow ..
anyway
i have to toy with it some more

50 % of the fighter release done here

4 out of 8 squadrons :)

red / blue / green / yellow
particles will be replaced with fighters

other particle sets soon to come
[splines in the center]
will be asault class aircraft

so the atack is devided in waves
a swift drone atack [in front ]
folowed by a fighter class atack wich will knock out most of the defensive countermeasures

and then the bombing by the asault class

man

i forgot the important part
the story

2 sides fight over a resource planet in a corner of their galaxy
controling this planet would mean a mayor powershift between these different races and the controller would have the upperhand above the other
after years of conflict they have a final stand off the current inhabitors of the planet the peacefull race will defend the position at all cost since their home planet's food production depends on the energy mined from the planet

the evil race wish to conquer the planet for selfless needs inorder to conquer the galaxy
years they have planed an all out asualt on the planet inorder to do a hostile takeover they have prepared special battle spacecrafts each designed for a specific task

both races will fight to theres nothing left to fight with in a final battle for the defense / hostile takeover of the planet

I think maybe you should focus a little more on composition. After all it is very important how all the differnt elements all tie together.
The story-concept has a homeworld feeling behind it, after all that was what you where doing most of the time in multiplayer, to take out your enemy's resource-harvesters and controllers. No resources means no production and development, resulting in becomming a sitting duck. It would not be the first time that my fleet was shot from under my butt because i had no resources left the build more ships.

But the fighter itself does not even come close to the homeworld feeling, especially not like the Kushan-fighters from the first homeworld game.

And if there is one thing that is inspirational from Homeworld than it must be that Space can be a very colorfull place.

im making my scene with a homeworld style to it so to say

i could recreate the homeworld fighters if id like but that isnt allowed in this contest
since resources are that hard to find
they resort to making planes multi atmospherical so to say
to save on costs etc

the ships self will be at the far end of the final . hard too see in that case

there will be some upclose destroyers in it / cruisers
wich im trying to scetch out
pretty hard for me since i suck at scetching :)

RobertJ
10-26-2004, 08:44 AM
My own concept is still developing, the original idea that i had for the final image seems to be less likely now, I still might do it, but there are more dramatic scenes that are comming up now while i am developing the technology that runs my galaxy. Scenes that are not only inspired by this technology, but also from our own (bloody) history, often it repeats itself.

Anyway, no wings on my spacecraft, wings are for aircraft

Archetype

Looking good, Voutlooz. Only real thing I notice this that the flightpaths on several of the fighters doesn't quite look like how a real fighter would fly (granted, this is science fiction, but if your intention is to mimic how a real world fighter behaves, then it's slightly off).

its more about the surreal feeling though

it has to look like nothing from this planet
yet humaniod made .

true it doesnt resemble earth flights but we are not creating those :)
still pondering about these issues ..

as i've planed these are the best maneuverable Aircraft in their Fleet
so its normal it should look like is pulling hard corners etc
since this happens in a space environment
with no / slim gravitational force / resistance etc

i think it looks pretty decent ..
on the other hand
if this was for a planetary mission ..
i would have edited it

some textures added on the fighter

asault class modeled and placed .
prevented shadows from trails getting cast

added new trail color "borg green" :)

basic idea
each engine
of on class the same colour
although on different classes different would occur [ since the speed of energy release would define the colour ]

thing to do on the Asault craft
Textures .

WOW, exelent stuff, Cant wait to see the full scene, hopefully seeing a fighter taken down by the drones :D, whats the concept behind them? are they a robotic swarm like the sentinels from the matrix, that move infront of the fighting squadrons to give them an edge in combat and to free the path for the fighters?

maaruh het ziet er alvast kick ass uit :D goed dat je alvast je scene hebt gepland voordat je al aan de details begint.

Archetype

Drones are mindless
Their flight path is irradic wich makes them hard targets
Via th main computer core onlly a few command can be given
Atack / Defend / Safety / Return and Launch, it automaticly finds targets wich have a different energy signature than the one currently programmed to ignore

its like a 3 wave atack

Cheap / asault wich does A shitload of damage
Quick asault wich knocks out most of the defense and takes out other fighters
Bombing run witch after the field is cleared out takes place this will massivly damage any heavily armoured vesel in the oponents fleet

Great model here .. lot of details .. I wonder how much do you spent on the surface detail compared to the overall model .. adding details is something that I still need to learn .. keep giving us these beautiful shots

we'll a lot of the detail on side engine casing is computer generated by greeble
only the piping / edges and other non greeble like stuff is normal geometry

so detailing it goes pretty fast

plugin called greeble
places random geometry on surfaces
used in films like starwars etc

Thanks Voutlooz. (It sounded like a it was going to be kept a secret from 3doid's followup.) Too bad I'm Maya 6 on Mac

Nice nice work.

Sweet moddeling man!, Remember though to test the ship at the distance and agle of your planned final shot so that the work on your pannels doen't dissapear with distance! I almost missed that those hull plates were there. I liked there look, but if you can't see them are they worth putting them there? :)

Looks awsome however rock on ;) those engine are kick'n!

Ziet er veelbelovend uit die scene :),
je destroyer doet me wat aan Homeworld2's movers denken :p
maar wel vette details mag ik zeggen, hoe lang heb je al ervaring met 3dstudio max?

Good luck!

are the ships going to have search lights and such? Would be cool if they'd shine a bundle of light at those incoming drones, with the shadow effects and all. yummey

i was going for the classic Spaceship feeling
like in starwars / battlestar galactica etc

How are you going to light up the engines on this beauty?

really like the details add... i don't know if someone has already ask (too many post :argh: )

But wich soft do you use, and wich render?

You're going for a classic spaceship look - and I have to say you've nailed it pretty darn well. Although it doesn't look like it one single bit, I get a Millenium Falcon feeling of sorts... can't be bad, can it?

@ rochr
:) more soon to come
i"ll do an area light on the engines / Adding a Glow to it is the best way to go i think

@XCM
Brazil r/s All the way

@JamesMK

Thanks :)
the look reminded me of starwars too yea
this will be the main line of concepting around the scene for this side ..
i havent Though of the enemy look that much yet and i doubt if i should go into that much details since they would be too distant to see anyway

anyway
all is still optional so could be changed asap if it doesnt seem "right"
@all others thnaks again for the support :)

hi Jeroen.. you are doing very nice stuff here and i wish you good luck in challenge!

as i see you have a lot of particle stuff.. im dealing with particles as well.. scene animation is totally procedural and almost all my objects are operated by PFlow.. only for planet defence im going to use around 20.000 objects.. :D

well.. the first i think you should reduce ambient light.. i think no ambient is the best solution.. through your composition you may create very impressive scene..

i think JoeB2C's idea is brilliant and should work in your scene just fine..
you may create very dramatic contrast between soft colored volum lights on the foreground and bright sun light and sharp shadows on the background..

for particles, to avoid collision with carrier the easiest way is just put gravity space warp with negative value and adjust radius and parameters.. align gravity's center with place exactly where from your ships exit from carrier.. in couple with drag space warp your ships will be pushed away and shortly reduce their speed for further trajectory correction..

also i may suggest you to use find target test instead of splines.. adjusting speed, acceleration and other params as well as gravity and drag space warps you may achieve very believable and impressive results..

i hope it helps..
keep great work up!
cheers..

voutlooz .. just a bunch of fantastic stuff here .. crazy details on that ship and a cool tribute (of sorts) to SW ships ... yah , i get that millenium falcon feel too, like it was made by the same company

good stuff ya got here:thumbsup:

voutlooz .. just a bunch of fantastic stuff here .. crazy details on that ship and a cool tribute (of sorts) to SW ships ... yah , i get that millenium falcon feel too, like it was made by the same company Same here; your work looks as good (if not maybe better than) as the ships coming out of the current Star Wars films.

greentek: Currently, I'm testing out lighting for space scenes and the best solution I've found (at least for now) is to use a distant light set at a low setting to mimic the Sun and an area light set at 50-60% to mimic 1 planet (for more planets, use the same number of area lights each set at a lower %).

EDIT: Should've pointed out that my lighting solution has only been tested for my scene, which features luminous beings set against 2 planets (one big planet and 1 small planet) and a distant sun; I have no idea how the lighting looks using metallic objects. If you're going to use a similar lighting setup, test it to see if it's what you want.

@greentek ill check out that stuff

ill do the spots "coming from the enemy side" searching for the defensive force that lies in the shadows
im relativly new to pflow i actualy have never used it before so there has been a lot learned already in this challenge

@pBarrelas ill start on the freighter should have almost the same feeling to it afterwards
ofcourse it will an entire different construction

@pigwater i think its due to its basic shaping and Easy design .. thats the way those Classic starwars ships where made too
like the starwars cruiser thing with the extremely simple triangular design

or the deathstar .. now this might seem complex but i could build you one just like it in a matter of minutes ..

@artic
im using a direct spot from a sun location with an orange / yellow difuse collour
and an omni from the planet "wich will have a breathable surface" and water ..
so the omni will cast Blue light from the atmosphere

@gpepper
nice of you to drop in again :)

@techart :) thanks aprecieate all of it :)
