I love the feeling of vast space - it's really great. There is one thing that probably could work a bit better - I mean adding some space on the left- right now main object is a bit too tight in frames IMHO, somehow disrupting composition.

Hey, that is a very excellent paintjob!

Now, I really really don't want to be a wet blanket here, I'm really looking out for you because I don't want you to get in trouble with the explicit copyright clause in the contest guidelines - - - but, aahh, er... You should maybe look out for the city-planet thingy from Disney's 'Treasure Planet' because this is dangerously close to it.... Just a very friendly pointer :)

Nice work ficolo. I will definitely be watching this one. The composition is great - very pure and clean. The only thing I would say, and no doubht you're getting to it, is that the foreground needs something, in part for scale, but also to lead the viewers eye into the piece - a small ship or whatever.

Otherwise, great work.

Two words suffice to describe this: wholly sh*t.

It certainly doesn't bode well for us untalented schmucks when you're producing art like that right out of the gate... which could undoubtedly do well in the 2D competition.

Looking at it again there's one thing that bothers me : the stringy elements that look like roots are 'hanging' off of the ring, as though they were in a gravity environment. If the ring were spinning, that effect wouldn't be there; if it weren't, such stuff would likely be going in random directions.

jddI don't believe to insert a scene of battle. I would like to recreate an instant of a day typical of this colonial civilization. There will obviously be many other elements that complete the composition

Thanks for the compliments, but I love too much 3d.....:bounce:

The ring doesn't rotate, and a fate of central magnet that holds back around the pieces with some rays.
The roots that you see are the refusals that are deposited after all to the structures and as bases are used for building us above other buildings "recycle some refusals"

It looks excellent already (and you haven't even started..), but I have a few critiques already, too...

It's not an entirely substantial structure. It can be perceived either as a giant colony in space or a paper-thin chunk of cylinder, depending on how you choose to look at it... although I see you're still filling in the empty space...

I hope you'll distinguish your cityscape from those automatically generated by the greeble plugin.

I suspect grays & monotones are going to abound in this challenge, so it might be a nice touch if you color & stylize your buildings to reflect a culture.

lord Sphere
10-20-2004, 06:16 PM
oh, two more things. The challenge criteria specifies that the image "should capture a pivotal moment," but you say you're just going to depict a day in the colony. I think that's fine, so long as you're aware that it's not *exactly* on topic.

Out of curiosity, what resolution are you painting at?

I had intention to use as focal moment of the scene, a sort of unloading on the underlying planet as soon as earth formed that represents a turn and an important moment for this culture.... however I am still working there above....

As it regards the greeble I promise you that I will try not to use it and to create how much more buildings and structures to give more variety show to the thing

Your idea is nice, and your concept sketch is absolutely wonderful. It's also my favorite concept, from what I've seen so far. But like what was said above, it would be a pity to see your efforts ruined by a lack of story behind it. The hard thing to do now is to find an event to display that would be as original as your concept sketch.

Hey ficolo, I really like your composition, very graphic in its layout. I see that you've done some concept sketches for a cargo ship. Ok gs, for one time I will post a crit in italian... propably I will found better words to tell that I love this work !

Francesco, first I really like the quality of your sketch, this is a clean and wonderful work!

I really like your concept. It surely has a great potential.
Only thing that I would like to crit in your main concept is that it now has certain elements scattered around in a way that makes it feel a bit hmm.. what is the word...dispersed? I think the composition could work better if some elements are more overlapping, but that is just my opinion and I bet you got lots of other elements to come :)

Great piece nevertheless, keep it up, I'm sure the final will be pure eye candy.

LOVE IT!!! This is really great conceptual work you have here… thumbs up!!!

The Semi ring design with the central hub and same motive all around is a very strong thing in this design. Choice of color palette is on the spot also IMHO.

The most disturbing thing for me in this sketch is the choice of scale. The main colony is already to far off and we lack the fine detail that you can certainly achieve if the camera will be closer. How about putting the spectator dead smack in that ring (without giving up on the curvature affect) viewing into outer space and seeing those other two colonies in small scale, and all the other participants of this scene.

I think the drama you can achieve with a change of scale and point of view could benefit this design immensely.

Well done, very elegant and you realy managed place and objects, while i was thinking most of my ideas overlaps in the scene which makes things bit confusing, i think you managed that very well, the colony and the ships and background comes together. good work Francesco.

Little suggestion: meaby you could put a lot of civilian small ships around colony (landing, flying by... some transporters..), i think it wpuld be greate foe showing scale

The probable history of the war scene is characterized from one war between the several cities satellites that fighting for the resources of the below planet. Which depends the future of every city…

For the scene of a disembarkation on the planet I want to focus the moments of the disembarkation in mass of cargos smalls and big ships in many thousand… we will see

Just a very friendly pointer :)

it's really a nice pic already..! so I don't understand why you would want to create it in 3d after. it will be hard and very time-consuming to catch the spirit it already has. that time could be spent on creating more nice 2d images or another 3d image. if you don't plan to do some kinda animation after will say..?
but, it's a great pic, one of my preferers actually. just feels like a loss of time to create it over again, in 3d. but if you do it, I will follow the process.. sure it will be long, but if you make it, it will be a great accomplishment!

Francesco, this is really great work!
I loved your concept and the first images.
Someone suggested the image was "empty" and then I see you filling it up with more spaceships and planets.
Be carefull you don't spoil your initial concept. These last spaceships do not add to the image but distract the composition and start making it look like comic space fight.
Imho, I would leave the image as is. With the big radial city/civilization and the two smaller ones. I like that it touches the atmosphere of the planet.
But I would remove the spaceship that overlaps the radial civil. It breaks its uniformity, and synthetical it overloads it.
Your concept's strenght, is its boldness that shows the vastness of space.
You have created a great piece , try to keep it that way and don't overwork on it.
I've seen this same phenomenon with other challenges as well. Artists keep adding more and more stuff, and finally clutter their artwork.
I'm curious to see it in 3d model, keeping the same atmosphere.

Hey ficolo,
look how amazing the main ship is.
i mean just the central spot that beams with its extensions on the side connecting the ring is reaaally awesome!
Now, why do you want to weaken it and distract people's attention ?
You are are a master craftsman, and every object you put in the comp is depicted nicely.
Problem is, imho, you've started putting too much eye-catching stuff in there.
When the sun is so bright, the planet overhanging the ship, and a bit of fuss going on with the supporting crafts, there is just too much going on! You can't show the prossess of a whole battle\sequence whatever in just one shot. So keep the basic player in and make him look at his best. It's just like trying to fit a whole thesus in one page. Say less but make sure your message gets through and is striking. People will remember one strong image. Think of it as an advertisment on TV. When you see too many you forget about them, with all their commotions and sfx going on.
If I where you I would start taking out some of the minor objects in order to reinforce the main ones.

An other small suggestion:
The other spaceships "break" the digonals in the comp.
Why dont you try adding a sort of light or something from top left ( where sun is) through the centre of main ship towards down right heading to big planet?

Btw, when are starting the 3d modeliing phase? maybe that dictates you the way to go on.

Apart from that you have inspired ideas and skillfull execution. Kudos

BOOOYAAAHHHH.
Man, that is cool.
I can't wait to see the whole thing all light up and stuff.
After the contest I think you need to create an animation of it blowing up.
Imaginr all the little part flying through space. It would be beautiful.

looks gorgeous!

can't wait to see more updates.

The concepts are really promising... Altough some of them look a bit too busy... there's too much going no... no real focus (although it seems that these circle things are worth being shown 10 times on the image (from various angles) ;) )
