Here is a still from an animation from my reel.

I'm currently finishing the reel. I'm mixing 3D and 2D. :P
I posted some 3D/Typo work in the Gallery/Finished Work forum a few days ago if you are interested.

This is a traditional cell/frame animation but painted with the computer. The BG is also painted with the computer, but I'm not very confident about the background. What do you think?

I expect comments and critiques! :scream:

Thanks! :)

And here is a link to the BG: (25% of the original)

nice work, Are you drawing the cels by hand, then scanning and painting in Photoshop, or are you using some 2d software?

thanks
-Todd

again, nice work

I think the background works good with this scene. The painting seems to fit with the character. Don't know much about this kinda style but the bkgrd looks dandy to me.:)

I'd like to see a bit of the animation. So many people have mastered an "anime" style nowadays that only the actual animation seperates the pros from the amateurs. I think the background looks good. The more hand painted a background looks, the better.

nice work,
but I thought the trees in the background pic stand out a bit too much because they look so sharp, as the grass and leaves have a kindof blurred colouring over them, maybe you could make them more scetchier and less liney

Thanks for the comments. I will blur a little the background and re-render the scene for the final thing.
I will show the whole reel when it's finished, so you can critique the animation too :D

Regards!

Sorry. I forgot to answer twidup.

In this scene the cells are painted in photoshop and coloured in photoshop. It wasn't a good idea to paint directly on the computer. It's slower than painting by hand :p

Well painting the cells can be faster by hand sometimes but if your good with photoshop it only takes minutes compared to the hours it ussally takes me to paint a cell. I guess It really depends what your best at, but I do prefer to do it by hand it just seems more rewarding.

BTW its cool to see some else acctually does cell animation, I was begining to think I was the only one...

I'm sorry. My english is crap and I wrote "paint" instead of "draw"
:argh:

You are absolutely right, ndat. Painting cells with the computer is very very fast compared by painting by hand. Also you can correct parts and change colors! :D Once I spilled red colour while painting a cell by hand and it was sooo depresing. Many hours waisted. :surprised

So I actually meant that :

"It wasn't a good idea to draw directly on the computer. It's slower than dwaring by hand".

BTW, I would love to see some more cell animation or stills. It's quite rare to see those! Could you show us something?

Regards!

i agree with you on that, even with a large tablet. i still find drawing with a pen/pencil on paper much much more accurate:D coloring on the computer though can be quite rewarding.

I painted 318 hand drawn cels toaday using USanimation, now theres Ink and paint for you ;) Could have done more but forgot to draw the artline on the one clean scne so I had to sit there and add them in USanimation which though easy takes more time than drawing a line with a pencil, started painteing lines and fills before I noticed though :(
Seriously though the images look great andbut I'd like to see a clip, I know from watching all the previous grad clas reels, that all the anime style ones while many still images would be greatimages don't work when animated, they just don't capteure what amkes anime animation what it is.

glad to see painted backgrounds that look painted, especially now with all the DIP programs, too many backgrounds are being whipped off looking boring flatt no atmosphere or texture to them, and all round ugly. many of us in our class were trying to make sure we did nice painted backgrounds, now it seems there are two of us, one doing hand painted and myself doing photoshop 7 trying to get the effect of being painted though.

I'm afraid I cannot post the sequence rigth now because I don't have enough bandwidth, but I'm not a good 2D animator :) I just did some cell animations to learn about animation theory, because I have worked with 3D and graphic design / typo in motion, and I wanted to study how to make animation with hand drawn pictures also, to put something in my reel. I have only make a few sequences and was a lot harder than I thought :surprised

But ,if you are still interested, send me a PM and I will send you this video sequence.
