very very inspiring work dimitri! the detail is superb. Specially love the sparrow..

May i ask how you made the terrain map? simply painted in Photoshop or modeled?

oh.. And how does your computer handle all this polygons?

@ lukep ...thank u friend ..i am sure the real fun will be when textured and have lights all around. :bounce:

@ Gamoron ...Between projects at work and mostly every night..many hours..lol...thanks man

@ visualact.com ...thanks ...me too waiting to see the texturing part ...lol :)

@ *Daniel McMillan..thank u ...like your story on your thread man

@ markovicd., grundgedanke ..thank u guys.

@ JohanL ..thanks...Terrain map was sculpted in ZBush 2 for OSX ...and in there also i will make and the final textures for it.
About my computer....not much to handle ..yet :D ...all the part that are repeated are INSTANCES...so less memory used and faster loading of scene...nothing is subdivided unless it will be real close to the camera...everything else is just Normal Smoothed...so ...up to now everything is under control...and don't forget that i will layer-render the final scene... :bounce:

@ ssgogetta ..thanks man..glad u like it

i really like the cable stayed look myself, plus the "suspended" outsides add a nice touch of sci-fi as well. One question for you though, you have such a keen sence of detail i wonder how the main "cables" (actually i suppose they have to be rigid structures, but the large arcs from which the suspension cables hang) are going to be anchored? do they attach to the towers you are starting now?

Love that walking airplane. How did you come up with that idea?
And the saucer ships warping in a blast, very nice. I like the feeling
of creative ideas pushing the edge u get. Grounded in the atmosphere.
Where the yellow dust covers the bottom half of the landed spaceship.
You go the extra mile and put me in that fantasy land. Keep up the
good work.

Awesome work! And so much productivity-where do find the time?
Tip: keep all the setup and make a 3d animated movie out of it.
Or even a game! :bounce:
I just can't imagine how the sparrows would fly attacking over those slick kaltrava-like bridges. (ti ton thelame ton Kalatrava? einai kai panakrivos?)
Can you show an approximate of how all these sculpted objects would be arranged in your 3d comp space?
You've spoiled us with all this, and we want more!

@ keetnum, Wilson 3d ...guys...thank u for the encouragement.

@ maranello55 ..thank u friend...about my system...i model in a P4 with 1Gigabyte ram and an Asus 9800 ultra 256ram (game card)....the complete scene will be layered and in this logic rendered after..The render will be line command render on a Dual G5 (2GHz) with 2 Gigs ram (soon 3gigs ram...lol) ...i am requesting license switch from pc to MAC in a few days so i can open my complete scene in my MAC. Software i am using
for most of vehicles and ships is Maya complete and for the bridge system and bridge Tower i am using XSI4 foundation. What i don't know yet is if i am going to use Lightwave's Hypervoxels for the explosion clouds and the sky clouds or i will have to stay late at work where we have Maya Unlimited and use fluids technology for clouds and explosion clouds...most particle systems will be designed in Maya and volumetrics also.
For the terrain and most of the texturing and displacement details i will import everything to ZBrush 2 for OSX and work there also any extra details. Characters ,if i have the time i will make them , for Isbur in Maya and for Grana in XSi....i think it will teach me a lot about these two apps and also in this way i am keeping the design differences of the two cultures in my concept.

thats it...if i forgot anything ..feel free to ask me again.. :bounce:

@ terraarc, Borro, gpepper ...hey ..thank u guys for your kind words.

Dimitris - Thanks for taking us for a tour around your plant!!:scream:

I am impressed with the tools that you use and the effort you put into this Challenge especially really worth the gadgets you have in your cg toolbox!

The models are very nicely done in Maya and XSI4. But on which program will you be rendering the final scene on your Dual G5? (First time I heard such a monster exists :scream: - And I want one!!:scream: :bounce: )Plus the special effects from Lightwave - How do you compose them all together for the final render??

Youve mentioned line command render earlier....somehow i think thats the answer to my question. Even if its not, can you please explain?:)

Sorry if im sticking my nose too much into your workflow. Im a self-taught in CG so i would like to learn and evaluate my considerations in choosing my tools.

Always an honor to be here with all the great CG ppl!!

Youve mentioned line command render earlier....somehow i think thats the answer to my question. Even if its not, can you please explain?:) ....

Hi friend, command line render is firing up Maya's Rendering engine only ...not the full App .(i have licence for working the full app in PC , but i can start just rendering in any machine i like...that is the legal license freedom i have for my Maya) . I render in Maya 'cuase i have more experience there for render settings and adjustments.

The special effects from Lightwave will be rendered alone easy....I will just take in same units the Global Position of my Camera in Maya ....make a exactly same camera in Lightwave and lock it there...and then i wll start messing around with Hypervoxels in order to take the effect i need. Unless i find some time to stay late at work where we have Maya Unlimited and mess around with fluids ...for exlosions and clouds and more stuff around fx i need in my scene.

...hey ...don't worry i am self tought in 3D too...it's fun ...u just need to study from fellow artists and from works generally done in tv or movies ..all the time... :bounce: ...and read a lot....lot's of studying...helps...i think...lol :bounce:

So Grana is launching an offensive on Kaheldar, which is in Isdur. (Correct me if im wrong) The justification of the battle is water.

So what is the outcome would be if the bridge is taken? (I guess the doodes in Grana will get lots of water)

But for an advanced civilization, couldnt they just make water from the atmosphere, a resolve from battle? (stupid! otherwise we wont have this entry fool!!:banghead: )

Its ok....but Im trying to visualize....

On the left side of the composition lies Kaheldar, and on the top right is the space armada of Grana already bearthed their motherships and deployed their load into the atmosphere. Some of the batalions already did major damage on the Bridge with fierce counter-offensive from Kaheldar. But by the look of the Granadian forces (I made that up!!) deployment, Kaheldar is loosing their ground and soon the water shall be theirs.

I would think that the viewing person will be up around a 1 km up from the ground looking in that dark chasm of the mega canyon with the bridge between.

Sorry but i like visualising!!:bounce:

i see you're doing a great job here.realy great.

the scetches are awesome.i like the idea very uch, some how dramatic:)
and the scetches itself is realy great.why didnt you singed in the 2D section?the scetches were realy good.and wel detailed.

and for the 3d parts, well, you're doing amazing.the "bird like" spaceship was perfect, nice and clean model .and the other models are even better.

nice style and concept.:applause:
i'm forward to see it finished.
good luck.

i really, really like the notion of these massive, bulky, and yet high design structures holding up a slim bridge and the actualy connection is a dainty little link between the two... that is just totally indicative of physics doing stuff we dont yet get. i love it! plus either these are tiny tiny people, or that is a HUGE ravine!!! it has four city sized things in its middle!!! sweet. ok done staing the obvious.

now i wonder now many ball things and sparrow things wide that bridge is... (well ok the ball thing is like four sparrows wide so i can guess that part)

Hi Dimitri, I can see you work late hours for these wonders you make.
Just my 2cents for the Tower render:
Although the two major pieces on the top are awesome and having seen them in wire before are really impresive, I think that the way they are positioned with the lower "base" spine like parts, makes the whole structure "top heavy", and distracts the attention a bit.
The lower "joints" and the "wheel" remind something from a tripod, and again imho sway the impression from a high tech civilization to a sort of toy gadget.
So after "λαϊκή" you might think of some more organic forms.
Waiting for your updates

What king of shaders are you planning to use? A very metalic and shine metal, chrome or a old and dirty textures?
You have a lot of details modeled and need to be carefull to not loose this details with a oversampled textures.

Now that you've put it in context with the bridge it rules!
I love the functionality, now that I can see how things fit together .
From what i grasp the two side gadgets are the turbines to keep the whole structure levitated and so is the base cylinder?
Awesome!

While chrome is very neat as such, I think it doesn't go well with things on a grand scale such as this.... just a theory... it could still be rather reflective, but IMHO things look bigger if they have a more prominent diffuse/rough surface component.... just a thought from one nut to another :bounce:

Hey there Dimitris. Nice modeling and bubblenuts details ... I will say, yeah, be careful with your texturing. The first hdr map is dangerous : those bright light spots gives the impression that your object is a little toy lit by artificial lighting. The second is better, the scale of the hdr suits the scale of your object (but it looks like the sky is not on top, but on the right) .
I totally second James' comment on scale and textures. It can be very reflective, but the fact that it is very big (which means many metal plates not 100% aligned, with little imperfections here and there, think large glass surfaces on skyscrapers), will scatter the reflections. Unless it is perfectly smooth... But even if you say it is high level technology that makes those surfaces perfectly smooth, I think our eye will link those smooth reflections to a medium/small scale. And of course it needs weather effects :)
keep up the (very) good work!

Although at first it doesn't have to do with my compositional thoughts...your thoughts are helping much my friend...after finishing this fast compo i was serioulsy thinking in those matters u are reffering...
I hear ya..the depth blocking is priority one, ..foreground and at the left i will have some close action and then try to lead the eye of the viewer to the center and last to the right.

What was bothering me before i see your post is that i have come to the conclusion of using 3 VP (vanishing points) but i also want to refine the image by eliminating as much as possible (but not completely) the tapering effect we have in wide camera angles when u look from the ground up...i found an article in a book specific to Maya's camera controls i have , so i am going to try to refine the image with this too.....Thanks man..really appreciated ..

From the models, i would have imagined that the bridge was much bigger than that and the attackers would look as mosquitos againts a giant.

Composition is a bit boring, not with the sense of drama that was in your sketches.
textures and explosions can change that so take this with some salt.

General mood and colors are very good.

Nice start to composition, like the others have mentioned it can be improved, just a little moving of your objects should fix this problem. Also, IMO it would be a sad waste if we couldn't see more of the bridge, since you put in such detail. Maybe a higher angle shot would help?

Cheers!

Thanks mates, ...don't worry guys last post isn't a composition test. It's just a test for me to see the scale of the models all together and also to see how my computer hadles the polycount...thanks for the advices though , i will have all of them in mind .. :bounce:

Hey what is going on here! I've been gone away from internet the weekend and this blast! WOW!

Very impressive work on the tower Dimitris! Really like it, and waiting for the textured version to blow me up!:bounce::bounce:

On the scale issue I agree with lukep on grand scale bridge compared to fighters and Lander (sorry if I mispelled the name is quite a few pages back :D ).

Waiting for more! :applause:

(though the limit set by you is leaving a minor window 0,3 FPS!) :buttrock:

I believed to die by seeing the previz... so great...

Just one question, do you plan to add something in close up ? (apart from your small head with glasses)

I think that that will be well to have even more this idea of depth and gigantism of this scene... no ? :arteest:

You're definitely on to something now  Distortion is always a problem in scenes like this of course - film offset is a great thing (just got it myself so to speak... never knew how useful it was)

I think maaaaaaaybe you could increase the focal length even more... the more 'tele' the more probable it is that you interpret it as a BIG scene...

Really feels like we're getting closer to the action. This rocks :buttrock:

@ Saschi0815 ...thank u my friend...no i haven't forgot what Laurent mentioned...i will take care of it...Actually i have a surprise for the LOW LEFT CORNER... ...i will start maybe tonight.

@ JamesMK ...u are right..Distortion is always a problem with these lenses....i found some interesting stuff about this matter...i have used this correction with film offset in the past and it tends to make the image more elegant to the eye...so i am goig to do so...thank u man...:bounce: ...hey James ..the surprise on the left corner..i think u will super nuts like it ... if i model this correctly...

I like the look you got going. Very refined and galactic. Should prove to be a great final entry once texturing and lighting are done. I think that's going to be the key in this challenge for everyone. Great modeling and texturing needs stellar lighting and mood to be convincing.

I was hoping to join in on this challenge since it's more or less up my alley, but work is crazy right now.......maybe next time!

I wish you luck my friend! You're really cranking!

11-15-2004, 06:43 PM
oh wow, the bridge towers were smaller than i though (unless the sparrows and transports are bigger than i thought) i had imagined it being that one side of the bridge could hold like 4 sparrows wide ro something, the towers by themselves made it seem that big! this is cool too though, and i like how it gives you the chance to display a lot of the detail you modelled in...
I do have to say though that even with the three focal points, the close proximity of the camera and the wide angle lens still feels a little fish eyed especially at the top of the shot where the nearest tower kind of flares outward... maybe back the camera up just a bit and then narrow the angle by maybe 3 degrees. the framing will stay the same but you will get less distortion.

DimitrisLiatsos
11-15-2004, 07:02 PM
@ Sandpiper ...heyyy..how are u friend?..i sure hope u have time and enter ..i love the clean way u model difficult stuff and make them look easy..heheh...hope u find time :bounce:

@ stork ..Thank u friend..i nfinal maybe i will make the road of the bridge wider if it helps in my image or concept ..the way i modeled this part of the bridge it's easy to change it anytime :) ...about ...lens still feels a little fish eyed especially at the top of the shot where the nearest tower kind of flares outward... maybe back the camera up just a bit and then narrow the angle by maybe 3 degrees. the framing will stay the same but you will get less distortion....yeah i know..don't wory i found the solution ..it's called film offseting and and at the sam time u tilt a little the camera up and it fixes the perspective narrowing immidietly.....i was experimenting with that a lot today...thank u friend for your observations. :deal:

hi Dimitris..
your bridge tower system model is a pure piece of art!! so delicate and elegant shapes it has!
beautiful..
well.. i have one idea about your composition.. try to place camera over the bridge near the tower system and direct camera along bridge slightly displacing camera either right or left so the bridge crosses the view diagonally and one tower occurs very close on the foreground and two towers on the opposite side in the middle/background.. this way you may use bridge as angular frame for the picture and it will look huge.. also, as most of your objects fly, in this case you'll get possibility to place them (or remains of them) also in the precipice (where btw you can put clouds or fog to underline huge scale of the action)..
though it may force you to use portret layout i think you may try it to see what kind of compositional possibilities it might give..
well.. anyway congrats with great work and cheers!!!

man you are going for a huge scene  :D

can't really see anything drastically wrong with the composition, although you could perhaps afford to move in a bit more, and maybe crop a bit more off the top of the front tower in doing so, I feel it should get across the feeling of scale better if it isn't completely in frame.
You'll have a better idea of what lighting effects you are going to be placing in here and where, try and take them into account as they will effect the final composition.

DimitrisLiatsos

The composition looks fine to me. A lot of action in different parts of the image. Currently it's kind of hard tounderstand the dimension 'cause no lighting and halo added (the planet on the top left is really distructing right now but obviously it won't in the final composition). Nice start on the commander too!

ahahaha! you really put yourself into the shit! :D all that texturing and hours waiting for renders you have in front of you... poor nut... but if you make it, sure it will be worth it. the scene looks great so far.

about the character.
if I where you I would give him smaller eyes, which would make him look bigger and more powerfull.
also, a little more definition, a few hard edges/straight lines.
and move ears up a little.
here's a quick little 'retouch' I did for you to see these changes and decide by yourself:
http://www.fellah.net/temp/3794_11006185142_large.gif
it can be personal preference, as with all. and I guess this character will be very small so these changes might not be visible anyways.

yes, relly nice Dimi! the last update looks very nice, one of your best characters that I've seen so far.

I have a few nitpicks(but still not as I think the eyes are the most important part of a caharacter)
I think that the eyelids could use more work. they look very thin and fragile. real ones are thick and fatty.
also the corner of the eye(outside of the eye), looks really to thin.. put more flesh there. just push that part out a little, as its usually a bone under that part(atleast right next to it)

oh one last thing. if I where you(I wish I was.. ofcourse :D ) I would have defined the sternocleidomastoideus muscle(m@ told me how to spell that word, he knows all parts of the body in latin and french) more, like it is on you humans(as the rest of him(except proportions) are made after human anatomy) it's hard to tell if u made it now.

shit I used to much ( ) ( ) ()()))()() hope you still understand :D

oh one last thing. if I where you(I wish I was.. ofcourse :D ) I would have defined the sternocleidomastoideus muscle(m@ told me how to spell that word, he knows all parts of the body in latin and french) more, like it is on you humans(as the rest of him(except proportions) are made after human anatomy) it's hard to tell if u made it now.

shit I used to much ( ) ( ) ()()))()() hope you still understand :DBefore I read The Comments I have The Same critic on Your Character.

Seriously...(if it's possible with me...)(my poor wife don't have a lot of chance to have a man like me you know...),
the little-special-thing-potatoedisturbingwildsquirrels of the nose is not too much important for me... I think with the texture, that will be perfect (in any case, if it will be not perfect... you will not my friend... I will change for... JamesWabbit by exemple:argh: ) And if I have understand all (that... it's no really sure...), this buddy is not totally an human like us ? He have the right to have some difference... hahahahahahaha...

Oh my god... you better get it right Dimitris :scream: I like what you did to his shoulders there, really underlines his bad-assedness (that's certainly a nifty word)

I have been away for a few days and catching up with your thread is quite a task............Your compo is quite involved, and I like your layout/placement/angles etc,etc...very nice bad arse warrior there.......A cross between a human and creature from my point of view.....I think I could suggest the eyes to be larger, more open with larger lids.........I dont care for the nostrils somehow,a taste thing, but perhaps the way you have them done is more ape like intentionally,so keeping this in mind this than does work.....:)

In either case your attitude and passion are great, and it shows in your art.......Keep it up Dimi, you should be proud of your results already..............:buttrock:

Surely a tank could be hidden behind him! But that a commander's duty, to serve and protect!
Pretty slick so far

Whoaw ! your character looks really great !
I think you've made an excellent job especially for the bumps that define the jaw. There's a real animal (bestial ?) feeling on these ones...

For the crits now : ...what ? no crits ? ah si !
The corner of the eyes, like someone said lacks flesh.
And I'm sure you will do something for his neck unless it is some kind of "Cardassian" looking guy.:D

Good luck !

I have just been reading up a bit more on HL2, have to admit there are a few times where I wouldn't mind having a Windows PC ....they're only short moments though :D

edit: nice to see something is slowing you down a bit at last by the way, might just give the rest of us a chance to catch up :D

Dimi!

Very nice character. Looks like a very old Granadian sage to me. I can almost imagine his wisdom and his commanding eyes.

You have mentioned on your earlier replies saying you are working in layers. I understand the concept of it in rendering but in modelling? Can you please explain if you dont mind me asking.

Thanks pal!
