ok, I'm just echoeing the general message :p Awsome work, the concept sketches could win the 2d challenge and the 3d modelling is truly masterful. You're a great inspiration to budding yound artist such as myself! I'll look forward to your explainations of creation methods as you seem to have modelling exactly what you want down to a fine art!!

Can't wait for the final piece, I think it will be a truly awsome work of art! :arteest:

Cool cannon shell and very sexy isoparms! Observation: the actual barrel for the big gun sort of perceptually shrunk a bit when the shell was added... maybe make it even fatter to compensate...

Hi Dimitris,
I came a little later to your thread.
Looking back to your 20 pages you already packed in your thread I must say there are all the reasons to have such a great feedback.
There is everything: huge scale, action, stars, planet, meteors, clouds (very nice clouds you have there), explosions, crushed structures, ships (and in ther lower right corner, even a survivor), everything into a spectacular composition. Nice color scheme: down is war and up is the sky ( from where the evil come).
If the images shown as sketches looks like this, how will look the final image?
Definitely, a thread to follow.
I saw you already choosed the landscape version. Both are good choises, depending on the final composition in the 3D scene. Using landscape is giving a little extra room to build and the portrait is having a more intense battle feeling (closer view). Remembering the Machineflesh challange, I`m sure you`ll make the right decision.
You have one "ugly", "violent", "fearfull" Sparrow fighter there. Very expressive. No doubt, Kaheldar will fall.
Goog luck and happy modeling!! :bounce:

@ JamesMK :p and continue :wip: with the village... :deal: ..thanks wabbit

@ Kurt B ...hey ..thanks...i liked your work very much in MachineFlesh challenge man!

@ HieSpike, dark-elf2 The think connecting to the wall are cables the Canon floats on the air thanks to those two powerfull turbines ...but from what u are saying..i think i have to make those cables more obvious..thx guys!

@ adr, gpepper, pBarrelas ....thanks guys for the support ...really appreciated!

@ PROctavian ...thanks friend....i think i have made the right choice to go to landscape final image....but we time so in case something changes in my head i hope will be able to do the needed changes. :)

Everything so far looks awsome. Yep thats all I can say. I especially like the sparrow plane when its turning and lifts its leg. Looks like its about to land on some powerlines.

I understood straight away that the gun was floating on turbines, well I thought repulsorlifts.
maybe once you have some 'distorted' hot air underneath it, it will be a bit more obvious to those that arn't star wars nerds like me :).

cant wait to see more! - ps: if you read all these replies you want have time to get it done on time. hehe.

Lemog
11-02-2004, 06:44 AM
Yeah... good concept and design... just one thing don't agree me too much... the difference of scale between the lander and ships... I know... the lander is normally big because the ships are inside... but that 2 sorts of ships are assembly by the same people... then, I think that will have more little parts, screws, bolts, etc on the lander...

I don't know exactly if you understand what I want to explain... my english is always confused

...and for the modeling... it's always perfect nutman :bounce:

You're making it very hard to come up with anything to crit... But Lemog has a point about more nuts and bolts perhaps... on the shell of this evil lander. Otherwise, well, even the brownish-yellow -> blue gradient overlay looks good :D

Okay I'm late to the game on checking out your entry, but let me say great work. I really like the colors in the concept sketches, especially how the colors evolved.

The designs are excellent and the models are too. Like most others I can't find anything that looks really bad. Only thing I have noticed, and forgive me if you're not finished, is the lander door and opening. The door needs to be thicker and the same with the wall of the opening. But I don't think you are finished.

Looking very good.

hey dimi, something just cropped up in my mind. it seems that would be an awful waste of metal to deploy 4 sparrows. maybe you could squeeze in more. like a front and back thing, sparrow facing away from each other.. and ermm.. some kinda blast mechanism to prevent them from burning each other in the butt. Just a thought, cos its a really cool design, i just wished there were more sparrows on the 2 wings that extend.

Also, some kinda landing mechanism, how is the sphere suppose to land flat? the crew is gonna get a tough ride if it slams straight into the ground. lol.

Anyhow, just some suggestions. probably you have not work on those areas that i've mentioned.

:bounce:

madshooter
11-02-2004, 07:47 AM
Hey Dimi, nice progrss on lander model. Only thing is that opening and that door is very sharp.
I think You need to add some detail on that area, or maybe you are still working on this model.
Oterwise it is simply amazing:thumbsup:

azazel
11-02-2004, 07:56 AM
I'm not entirely happy with sparrow's landing gear - it looks like inspired by a bird's legs, but does not exactly fits the fighter. I'd make it lower, slightly 'lighter' (less bulky).

Virtuoso
11-02-2004, 07:57 AM
Overall a wonderful piece of work....I quess the others here brought up a couple minor crits to help you out with.......I would say add more,or pack in more sparrows,it's what DOM Suggested, and something I thought of almost immeadiatly as well.......Possibly a few crooked areas,or dents,a bit more messed up,a few deformations on the hull.A little more detail in various areas........Make it a bit more "Non mechanical".......Less perfect ( A taste thing, nothing wrong on your part)..........In any case you do have a wonderful piece, the idea is very good,an interesting model for sure,I like the quanity, and best yet the quality matches it.........Keep it rolling in......:arteest:

hmm
id modify the mesh to have somekind of "sparow slot"

the launch bay takes u twice as much surface area than the sparows
wich make them look like flies. tbh :\

especialy when u compare it to the front door ..
wich is even bigger

@ cattledog, terraarc, madshooter .... thanks...don't worry the part of the door is not even worked yet...i am just trying to show where the front bay door will be ....

@ JamesMK roger ...roger ...or " OK BUCK" ...i am gonna squiiizzz my head more there.

@ Dom , Virtuoso, Vootlooz ...Thanks guys..well maybe u are right...maybe i have to utilize the Side - Bay space more ...either more Sparrows...or a smarter bay ..just not to waste so much metal...let me see what i can do....Michael ...u are right about making it less perfect..most of that part i am counting to be done when i will start texturing all the models...so we will talk about it again then ...thanks guys ..really apreciated (sorry for my Engrish)

@ azazel..thanks man, how are u ?..about the legs of the sparrow...for the bird look , i wanted them to look like bird legs...regarding the size of them (fat or slim) ..i had different opinions about it ...i came to the conclusion to make them a little fat and bulky just to show that they can keep the burden and ...in an animation test i did it was kinda funny(lol)...

@ KoryH, rattlesnake, Powell, SONIC-X , Cgstripe, essencedesign...thanks guys for your kind words :bounce:
thanks CG Bubbles ...most helpfull ..let me see what i can do about your obervations.:bounce:

...i made some modifications to utilize more the Side-Bay space... Now FOUR Sparrows can lift off from EACH side ...which makes Lander a total of EIGHT...yes i can count...and doors more sideways and less fat metal construction in there to free space. Basically i was thinking dom's suggestions...now i have to show the similarity (Lemog..thanks buddy) with the Sparrow on technology and fix front bay area and what will come out of that door..argghhh...and the system that moves and keep steady this Fuzzball...

Anyway basic i am trying hard to keep on Lemog's , dom's , JamesMK's , flyingP and Vootlooz's observations in different areas , i have given to much thought on what u said guys...thank u .

stork
11-03-2004, 04:31 PM
your designs to this point are right on track i think... i am not sure i agree with the folks who want to add more bolts to the pod. i think what may look better is if you add some basic panelling during the texture phase, but the design as it is now is sleek, and bolts will make it look perhaps a little lower technology than it is now. thats just my two cents worth.

@ fellah ...thanks man...hmmm u gave me an idea ...let me get back to this when i start making the towers...lol

@ tzktime ...thank u ...level of realism?...not at all ijust am trying to put myself in a view of seeing how would everything look in a story like this...just that...references?...mostly logic( :argh: ) thoughts ..or simlpy an effort to visualize the moment i am trying to recreate...... :wip: :deal: :wip:

Hi, Dimitris!

Very gr8 work! Exellent modelling. Don't have any crits though but I'm interested how r u working with such highly detailed models? Maybe powerful computer? Mine is crappy & lagging in viewport if I dont hide most of the part. Especially I hate nurbs smoothing applied to the polys. Anyway, just curious about your composing & render tricks if there are some and maybe some advices to enable comfortable working with hipoly model?

And keep them coming! Very impressive! :bounce:

@ Andrey_SE ..thanks man....about the setup....
i model everything on an a P4 3 Ghz (small factor PC) in Maya6, XSI4 and the ZBrush modeling and texturing in my G5  ... there i will also make the most of the details of the characters i will have in my scene ..if i have the time to make them...lol , also the rendering of the final scene will be done in my G5 (Dual 2GHz) by command line 'cuase i dont have Maya for Mac so i just can use the renderer and not the complete package there. The massive final polycount will be controlled by layered rendering ..starting from the most far away stuff and layer by layer closing in camera. Also all the explosions and volumetric effects will be layered ...i think when this scene will come to compositing i will have something around 30 - 40 layers..lol....but that's ok unless i stop taking my daily dose of coffee ..lol

@ pBarrelas ...danko! hope these angles so a little bit more.

Well me and the wabbit kind of find Scotland a good idea, way, way back I did bit of a stint as a bar man at a pub by Loch Ness even painted the barsign, we can all get wild on Whisky (they had a mass of single malts) and then go look for Nessie......almost guarantied to see her after a night on the malt too

...me likes Scotland idea....me and and Nessie go way back  :scream: :scream:  ..bubbles

Here it is ..my Finished BUMBA Grana TANK

Well.. the guns are the same style like The Landers Side Guns...(actually they are exactly the same ..) i just modeled the base for them and cofigured them to look as i wanted on this tank....as i said earlier this will be in the middle depth of the image ..i think... so i tried to model it as fast as i could. I will try to give any extra details through texturing...

I hope u like it.

very nice job dimitri. But Im going to beg you to do something, something that I have a gripe against most space ships and anything , is that most people design them symetrical, which wouldnt matter since theres no air in space to fly in. On top of that, people design them to be able to fly in planets and such when not all space ships would do so. Finnaly, there would have to be other means to create more control in space rather than just a few rocket boosters on the back as well. With all this in mind, Im on my hands and knees here, for any space ships please take these factors into account unless there ment to fly on ground or not (I mean, look at homeworlds space ship design). Thanks man, keep pluging!

...forgive me ..but if i understood correctly...u are acusing me of ignoring the basic rules of Physics? ...well that means that my PHD in PHYSICS is telling lies...and also my friend i think that here we are trying to recreate a fictional situation with some reason of logic...not full logic but more for the sake of art..and iny case i can prove to u some basic rules of Gravitation, Hydrodynamics and Air Propulsion are already existing in what i have up to now made ...If i didn't understand corectly and u mean something else gorgive me for what i said.

Cool. If I had four copies of my PC, I could perhaps handle such a previs using clustering.

Good update, bastard :buttrock: Nothing to complain about concerning the bridge, the only thing I can think of is a slight risk that too much of those wires might sort of make the final image too cluttered... but all that depends on so many other variables, so I'll rest my case.

Have you completed the stability calculations for the bridge segments to make sure it will support the troop vehicles? :D

Great job on the bridge, as for the rest of parts you showed in this thread.

But from a technical point of a view (i can't forget I'm an engineer), hanged bridge with central column single fixation point is one of the oldest technology available, and not a very efficient one.

Besides the risk of cluttering the picture, I'm not sure this will convey the idea of an advanced bridge system.

sorry dont have any pointers under hand. Perhaps try icivil engineer (http://www.icivilengineer.com)

The design you used is called the cable stayed one. not a bad design at all and widely used. In fact not a so bad choice as this type of bridge dont need anchorage on the sides.
But this kind of bridge is very flexible horizontally which make him ill suited for your purpose.

The newest trend (not yet build AFAIK) in this type of bridge is a combination with the older suspended deck one (think golden Gates).

Now for your design you need IMHO some self supporting deck. You have the choice of either cantilever, compression arch suspended deck or cables compressing deck caissons. Or again a combination.

A Very good looking one of the latter type is millenium bridge over Thames where tension cables are parallel to the main deck on thrust arms. This is very unusual looking and you could put the tower ships under it, clearing completly the deck for action on it.

come ooooon people.. what the hell are you talking about?! what the difference what kind of supporting decks are used in the scene from the technical aspect.. and whats wrong with a bridge without any supporting decks at all? what about self anti-gravitational field for instance.. in my opinion Dimitris may feel free to use any design for the bridge he thinks suits the best for the composition of the scene and looks nice..

i think, to demand from the artwork of Dimitris the technical correctness would be as wrong as demand from the developers of a real bridge to consider overloads possible in the "The Fall Of Kaheldar".. :D

great stuff dimitris.. what about bridge, i think support system's design doesn't look appropriate for the common style.. but i think because it's not finished yet..

great work as in general as well as in details..

cheers..

lukep
11-07-2004, 01:11 PM
Greentek, if you read the thread carefully, you will see that we did not cared about the technical correctness, but the fact a suspended bridge wont look very advanced, and will clutter the view quite a bit.

Of course Dimitri will see what fits for his scene, and I'm confident we will see some NUT design.
