not really happy with a lot of this at the moment...and to be honest I really like some decent crit on it.
I will however keep banging my head against the wall until I feel it's acceptable ....or I am unconscious

On top of that with this sort of attention I am either going to have to come up with something totally kick ass or embarrass myself completely, the likelihood of the second is higher :scream: thanks for the votes of confidence though

@Virtuoso: back at you, I am expecting more massive poly counts :D

@Atwooki: still got a bit of learning to do with that tool box especially If I get zbrush into this, but like I said to you before this is a good excuse to sit down and find out how things work. :D

flyingP
10-19-2004, 09:46 AM
OK so it starts

I'm sort of half way through sketching / thinking but I thought make a start on thinking the story line through too

anyway first concept, bit cliché but what the hell

home world Tobas of the Dorlan (names may well change)
The Dorlan race was one of the very first to expand into space, originally very aggressive taking what they found by other civilisations (who were thereafter eradicated..... they thought) and using it to help accelerate the expansion.
That was in the begging, 3 thousand years ago, now the Dorlan have become complacent/decadent their expansion slowed to the point of stopping, it has been long since battles have been fought and their fleet has been mothballed or dismantled..... but then space is big, 3,000 years later the remnants of those once crushed had found other expanses and have grown without the knowledge of the Dorlan they're strong, the haven't forgotten....and they're back

I'm sort of thinking of showing a scene of the first surprise attack on Tobas the Dorlan homeworld, at the moment I sort of see a huge monument to the earlier Dorlan conquests, in a cityscape, being hit by fire from space....with the odd small ship buzzing around trying to escape. I was also thinking of a large red sun in the background with some sort of ring around it also being attacked nothing fancy just want to show that this is a highly advanced technological civilisation that has expanded into space

and I have no idea if I'll be able to finish this (never tried anything like this).....gonna be fun trying though.

let me know if you think it's stupid :)

JamesMK
10-19-2004, 09:53 AM
For the storyline, I vote 'not stupid' :D

Seriously, it's got great potential - particularly the "monument engulfed in enemy fire" might very well turn out epic/archetypical in a grand way.... Go ahead, I say!

Make sure to include some actual mothballs too, I'd like to see that :D

EDIT - Oh, and you've just breached the 1000-views barrier... Feeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel the pressure ;)

Like I said a start, and I'm not completely sure if I'll stay with it.
Assuming I do then I'm also still not too clear on the composition although I'd quite like to concentrate on the fleeing ship which is why I've cropped the monuments hands at the moment.

Anyway let me have it :D

Whoa... Not unexpectedly, it looks really good. Love the tilted camera and the dynamics of the monument... The only crit I can think of is that the ship in the mid-right part could perhaps look a little more menacing (assuming it's one of the attacking vessels of course)..

....bastard.....

flyingP
10-19-2004, 07:44 PM

Oh, my apololologies :D Then it's perfect just the way it is, that is, not menacing.

Panupat
10-19-2004, 07:55 PM
that's a monument o_O? I saw it as a sport athlete trying to grab that ball looking thing. Which was pretty cool IMO :D his pose is very dynamic and work really well with the tilting camera

flyingP
10-19-2004, 07:59 PM

@Empy:
it will be xtremely hard, but doable
at least I think I should learn something from the attempt. :D

@DimitrisLiatsos: Thanks mate, me being in the 3D section at all is nuts, blame the Wabbit he talked me into it :D

@oshiroii: I can see I'll have to address that monument situation :hmm: actually I was planning on having it look a bit more chiselled, if you know what I mean, ie as if it ha been made out of a huge block of stone or similar, I don't want it too detailed, as I still feel I'd like the focus to be on the smaller ship, I just got carried away with the drawing :)

@rattlesnake: thanks mate, I'll see what I can do :)

@WazaR: thanks mate, I'm more comfortable with it knowing that someone else thinks so too

it's OK 3doid that was just my way of commenting that it does indeed look a bit like one, this is just a side view and still somewhat unclear in places, I'm working on a few more perspectives that will hopefully make things clearer....for me as much as anyone else.

@GeeNoc : I'll give it my best :)

@DimitrisLiatsos hadn't really planned to, at least nothing massive, I'd like to add a few smaller ones in the background but are most likely to keep those very simple, somehow I fell this has more story by focusing on the hip in the front.

@BloodTaster you too mate and I'm following your thread as well :D

@Virtuoso size ratios, ,naahh I never really think that far into it if it isn't necessary, whatever looks good.

@HieSpike hey I'm just as surprised, they are a cool bunch of guys in here though :D and I've already been over to your thread.

Hey Brian!! Ideas are looking good... i don't think you necessarily need to worry too much about the colours at the concept stage... you can do so much fiddling when you get them into 3D and the lighting could have a big impact if there's any strong colour casts.

I loved that concept drawing... any more sketches of the statue coming? Or any 3D on the way?

Hey Brian!! Ideas are looking good... i don't think you necessarily need to worry too much about the colours at the concept stage... you can do so much fiddling when you get them into 3D and the lighting could have a big impact if there's any strong colour casts.

I loved that concept drawing... any more sketches of the statue coming? Or any 3D on the way?

some 3D is on the way, sorry I'm just not as fast as some of the others here

and yeah I agree totally with you about the colours, was just an experiment :D

I think that the impression the 3D model gives you is because of the lack of details and tech stuff compared to your 2D sketches, IMHO. But I'm sure that those details will be added later in your modeling phase. I like your style, your sketches are really detailed, and it gives the impression it really could exist. Hope you'll be able to keep that feeling when turning everything into 3D.

Some satisfying design work in that ship - nice one. It does look a bit "small" but I am guessing that is because of the broad chunky shapes you have used and it will feel "larger" when you add the greebles and technical thing-um-ma-bobs.

That spaceship of yours really IS shaping up very well. Don't know if I mentioned it earlier, but it's like those details actually make sense and/or have a purpose rather than being general greebles.... As a whole, it seems very tangible... 'tis good shit.

Actually I'd love to go 3D (well more 3D it is creeping slowly into my current work) , just I aren't about to start pushing it until I feel I have a portfolio that's up to standard and more importantly that I'm confident I can finish a job within the deadline.

thanks dom , and umm no I freelance as an illustrator (storyboards, visuals for the most part ) and it's a bit hard to get out of your box once you've worked yourself into it, I have yet to convince (or 'really' try to, for those reasons explained before) clients that I can produce 3D work for there needs within the deadline, there is a lot more knowledge required for 3D as 2D IMO and I'm still learning, although having the 2D background does help IMO .......actually just wait until some of those in the 2D section this time start taking more interest in 3D

Good I feel I've done enough with this now, although there is heaps I could still add, fact is these angles are unlikely to be seen in the final image, it is nice to keep ones options open though. :D

Me likes potaotes,MACS, and your Spaceship...and..and ...and the TURBINE on it....me kinda likes likes this design in turbines these days.......what have i read above(Engrish :scream: ) ...u work only 2D for living...man your modeling is way very clean and steady...i do not believe u ...u are telling lies just to impress us (engrish again) :scream:

Very good work...now ..i am getting dizzy...go to the next model... :wip:

Solid, dude. And the asymmetric quality is quite ingenious too if I may say so... it's not like you could stop me, on the other hand... just trying to be polite :D

It's smooth. It's elegant. It's made by a pig. Yay!

...u are telling lies just to impress us

sadly no, just storyboards, visuals, and the occasional piece of finished illustration for advertising agencies.....it's starting to bore the crap out of me too but it pays the bills
To be honest though I am starting to get more 3D into the above mentioned thanks to Maxon's toon shader, often saves time on difficult perspectives and the renders are pretty close to my sketch style.... if not better

cheers

...about MAXON's toon shader..i have heard a lot of good words for it...although i don't know how it works...Man...with your artistic background u can eliminate a lot of bubbles... :bounce: ...

that's not an easy one in one or two sentences to answer Dimitris, it's easyish to use, although has enough options to get complicated.

so thought I'd give some thought to the figure in the background which is basically, now all I have to do is find some way of simplifying it a bit o_O. Still working on the rest of the figure but I was wanting to stay reasonably close to the initial sketch.

Really great concept and model.

Will we see more than one of your little ship in the final image? I hope he's so good. He looks like a little hovering droid.

Continue your great work, can't wait to see more model.

should do, if I can hold the composition in the final render I am hoping that it'll attract the most attention... well see :)

Not only your taste, I agree with this observation. Now one could of course wonder how much a sane person is supposed to trust the opinions of the greek freak and a guy that frequently borrows his daughters doll clothes to dress up a stuffed bunny and take photos of it.

and I bet you are wearing a sports bra too :wise:

I'll think about it guys although I quite like it myself how it is  , apart from that it's another one of those elements that won't be 'so' visible in the final image (at least that was the plan) I'll take it into consideration though
