OK just to show some signs of life, VERY early stages at them moment, and good ol' Otto (the figure) is just in there as a guide to work around at the moment...........it's a start at least :)

JamesMK

And we have a start on the stuff! :applause: This is one of the nicer things I've seen Otto exposed to though.... There's is usually some more torture involved. Guess that's why he still looks happy about it :lightbulb

@ the wabbit: sissy :p

@ Squibbit: yeah time seems to be rare at the moment, seems if it's not work it's domestic issues that hold me up :banghead: guess I will just have to stop sleeping

@Vittorius: I do plan to rough it up in Zbrush later, although not quite in that fashion, I want to make it look like stone or similar.

@The Greek nut with the physics degree: Mum actually keeps talking about making wabbit stew
Yep the shoulder pad an area around the neck are still very :wip: I actually spent time googling armour last night, just haven't really found anything that inspires me

@D-3 : thanks  I'm working on it.......well, actually, no, I'm trying to keeps out of the way of a couple of guys here who are installing a new window to the balcony at them moment........bastards picked a bloody cold day to do it on too :argh:

ORC armors in appleseed by masamune shirow. The armor design (it's an armor, not a mecha) is inspiring and very practical. Your helmet already looks much like them.

Keep up the good work! :buttrock:

Ran into a few issues with the design of the armour (I wasn't liking it :( ), so I have decided to go back and actually design the thing in 2D later.

In the meantime I have started modelling the helm :D

not quite, but I at least have learnt my lesson....I am hopeless at designing alone in a 3D environment, I find it much easier when I've sketched the concept out first

WazaR
11-17-2004, 02:53 AM
That is why I carefully planned everything in my comp. before doing anything in 3d. It reall makes the work alot easier.////

Cartesius
11-17-2004, 03:14 AM
I really like the design of that helmet! I'm vaguely reminded of the Storm Troopers from Star Wars but it's still a design of its own (might be just the colour that put my mind in that direction). Waiting for the next update! ;)

That is why I carefully planned everything in my comp. before doing anything in 3d. It reall makes the work alot easier.////For me it's exactly the opposite as I do all my sketching in 3D. If I try to draw in 2D what I want to accomplish it always look like crap and nothing like what I had in mind, but if I start "sketching" in 3D it goes much better. I suppose I have a very 3D way of visualizing thing.

/Anders

flyingP
11-17-2004, 09:27 AM
:surprised wierd I had no idea you guys had replied, at least no email notification this time...ah well
@WazaR: yep really does seem to suit me better too, at least with complex designs

@Cartesius: strange you mention that with the storm troopers I was having the same feeling until I dug out a few storm trooper pictures, they really are totally different but there is something in there that keeps bringing them to mind for me too

I am often amazed with some of the things that people bring out here in 3D with only a very rough or no 2d sketch before hand. I just find the application then just tends to take control of the shapes I am creating and they'll often not those I want. I use different ways of modelling for different things some of this here is done through subdividing/extruding base forms, other parts loft nurbs, and perhaps more, often working from a single poly as a starting point and extending out from there. Thing is if I am unsure on what it is I am wanting to model I often go down the wrong road.

guess I was just being lazy I should/would normally have drawn that armour up first...there are elements I'll keep though maybe :)

So thought I'd place the head on that body armour just for the hell of it, I may just keep the breast plate although I'll have to modify things a bit if I want to bring this figure into the pose I had planned... either that or cheat a bit :) . I will be redoing the arms though which I was not happy with.

fellah
11-18-2004, 02:16 AM
I really like the superhard edges and definition of the head, superb!
I read you where not finito with the torso. it looks ok to me though, just needs some more stuff to "equalize" it with the head. and I hope you won't forget to make the same definition and hard edges as on the head, love that stuff

looking forward to follow this thread.. damn sad that it's so hard to start follow threads after they pass a few hundred posts ;)

@fellah: thanks and yep do plan to sharpen up a number of the edges on that torso, the issues I have with it still are not too major and I should be able to bend it to what I want, it was the arms I had on it before that were really bugging me. And I know what you mean about trying to following threads I've missed a lot of stuff in a number of them that I am already even subscribed to...big challenge :)

Just in to sort of second that it does not look like a SW ST... On a generic level, anything that's composed of small softish shells will of course have something in common with other things composed of small softish shells... but that's another story...

Really great sketches, Brian, you are very talented! Just remember to not go overboard with the details when you start modeling - the scene should be "epic" so in the end it might not be necessary for you to spend all this time doing outstanding armour (although I would love to see that soldier materialize in all its 3D glory!)

yeah but then go back to the initial concept sketch, the figure takes up a good half of the image, I don't want it overcomplicated, but then I think it may look a bit weak if it is 'too' simple as well  .......the trick for me is going to be finishing all this in time :scream:

I'm here to say what a great job you're doing with that character (with of without hands)...
His face kind of reminds me my council member sketch....apart from the fact that he is a soldier and not a council member with a long robe!!

Those sketches are awesome. Both your style and your ideas are great. I've been trying to design something armourish for the one closeup military figure in my challenge (not something i've ever done before or know anything about),and your drawings just make me cry. One thing: I'm not sure if he's meant to be human exactly, but to my eye he looks a little short in the pecs.

yes and no, want it to be something recognisable with a few hints of alienness. Don't take the proportions on those sketches to seriously either, they're just intended as a 'design aid' :D

Hi there! It's obvious that he looks great, so no need to emphasize that again:thumbsup: But I have a question... did you try to arrange him into the pose that you have presented in your sketch? I think that with this design of the helmet the pose which looks amazing on the sketch, won't look good with this guy... The helmet os quite flat and long, and if this guy looks up, it may look strange.

been waiting for someone to pick up on that :applause: and you're quite right......to be honest though I am rather sceptical that I can recreate that pose at all as I have drawn it, in 3D. I often tend to be a bit more liberal with perspective in 2D ( I cheat ) but then bending the rules are easier with a 2D drawing than with a 3D model. I'll try and come as close as I can or rethink the pose/composition a bit ......nothing is carved in stone here as yet.

unlikely...my thread seems to have been getting a disproportionate number of views ( has surprised the hell out of me too to be honest ) but there is a lot of really good work floating around in a lot of entries here that seem to be getting a bit overlooked......and then there is the stuff the guys are doing in the 2D section a lot of which is really kicking butt.
Aaaannnnnd to be honest I doubt I'll manage to finish this there are still far to many holes in my knowledge which I am still trying to fill (which is one of my reasons for having a go at this challenge to start with)

flyingP,

Detail is incredible but when I saw the front page of your thread with the elbow sketch, my first thought was some kind of creature with lense like eyes and an articulated neck (close one eye, de-focus and squint...maybe see what I mean, ok maybe not, like trying to pick shapes from clouds).

Look forward to more

It seems like the start of December and eventually winter has brought some general AMIGMI? = "am I gonna make it?" thoughts in most of the CG talkers here.... :)

Man, I believe that (taking your initial concept) you're not that far! You already have the SShip and working on the main front character!! (Oohh, did I mention that he is looking really BIG in the composition?) I think you're on track with it!

you know I honestly spent hours doing that as a kid, Auckland where I grew up has great clouds for that IMO...big and fluffy and they change quickly....they're rather seldom where I am now and it's funny I have often mentioned to my wife I really miss them

@terraarc don't get me wrong I am not giving up or anything just I have higher priorities on actually learning something out of this (which I believe I am doing), if I meet the deadline in time so much the better but I don't want it to hold me up from experimenting with a bit of stuff here (and in the end the more confident I become with this medium the faster I will be) .
All in all if I can get this figure finished then I'm not too far away methinks

heh, yea , I know u wanted some serious crits but I couldn't come up with anything :)maybe you're overcritical ?

JamesMK
12-04-2004, 07:47 PM
And now the time has come for a dose of RealCrits (tm), proudly presented by Wabbit Media Inc, a division of WheelieCarrot Industries (in turn part of the BuckTooth/Currywurst Investment Group, ultimately owned by Lord Panzerpants of the galactic federation headquarters on Neuronomicon IX).

The only problem with this model in its current phase is that it doesn't really have a problem.

If one should push the art of crits to an extreme point, one would be able to deliver the following thoughts:

The design, as implemented this far in 3D, is fairly middle-of-the-road. The modeling is apparently executed with such careful precision that the result ends up lacking character, at least if one considers the vital nature of the 2D concept sketches.

The 3D incarnation does not push anything to the extreme, which makes the result have exclusively moderate features rather than something that really pops. Everything about it is good and clean, which confusingly enough becomes its weakness.

It is not beefy, nor thin. Neither ridiculously over-armoured, nor jumpsuitishly slim. Normally these would be good things, but if we push it really hard, it becomes clear that we could also consider this to result in something that is 'average'. And I believe this feeling is what makes you think you're not too happy with it.

So, with all due respect (and you know I'm almost never serious anyway) I would advise you to stop being so bloody careful when you're modeling. Your drawn sketches get a lot of their strength from the fact that they are really loose and relaxed, because you are so confident about your drawing abilities. That loose and relaxed feeling should be present in the 3D model as well. Be a bit sloppier! When you extrude something - do it a little too far. When you move something - move it a little more than you planned.

As for the character itself, I would like to see a stronger V-shape on the upper half of the torso, and a little more neck.

This program was sponsored by Campbells Wabbit soup. Tune in again next week.

You have a real nice model, now get that thing beaten up,give it character, give it a real thrashing.........Forget the store-bought like new look.....give it the war torn been through many battles look........In any case I agree with James, and in the end this is your baby, but letting loose is the way I would approach it,just another guy here with yet anothwer opinion, but perhaps some fruit for thought.......All the best Brian, you got the skills, just let them flow freely, and listen to that wild and fun James MK,he is knows his stuff.......Nice to talk to you again, until next time, take care............:arteest: :arteest:

War torn would look a bit out of place here, this thing is supposed to be in the end a huge statue celebrating ancient victories, not sure they would have built it to look like he's just had his butt seriously kicked, but there will be some damage :)

Kind of feel a bit uncomfortable posting this, especially in view of a lot of the great support I've received from a lot of good people in here, but I won't be finishing this this time around, I've been down the last week or so thanks to a rather unpleasant bug my son brought back from day care, and one or two thing other things have happened/been decided in the meantime that are going to keep me busy for a while or at least cause me to rethink a few major things next year.
That being said I will be coming back to this later, when I have bit more of an opportunity to make a "decent" job of it.

ummm sorry

and best luck to all the rest of you :)

I hope you and your son are both feeling better. Have a great Christmas and i hope whatever you do in 2005 goes fantastically!!

Maybe see you in the next challenge...?

Don't know if it's safe to expose the kids to those Mac thingies at such young age though... might leave mental scars for life...
