warmin up ... :)

Gwottiboog , da planit muncher , sits on a star , relaxing after a
planet hunt . Very few planets ever escapeGwottiboog , cause they
rarely run away. Maybe they don't see him coming .
Atop Gwottiboog's head grows the tree of wisdom , all leafless and
withered , surrounded by eternal autumn.
In a net on da planit munchers back are his captured planets.
Today , Gwottiboog is going to have a green one .
It is a planet that belonged to the
invincible Warramucho Empire , like all
the other planets in the net. This green
one is the planet of heroes ; veterans
of thousands of battles have retired
here to enjoy the planets magnificient
baths , beaches and hotels.
They will all be eaten by Gwottiboog.
Countless of civilizations disappear into da planit muncher's maw.

Squibbit
10-19-2004, 04:57 PM
ahumm ... err.. these are more like TAKES from stories , flyingP,
not whole stories.

yea maybe one or two of them could be made into a story ,
but my written language is simple and crude , you seen it ....
all like :
" dat man go to forist , it not all well there , man feel dizzy.
still thers great treasure in the woods , the gnome had promised,
so the man presses on. While walking dizzines grows stronger,
like a bear. Man feel fingertips oddly wet. he touch index finger
against thumb and his dizzy head starts tingling with odd sensation.
-weird, he thinks. he press fingers together stronger and PAIN
erupts in his head ! -YEEAARRGH , he screams and falls to the ground.
-what was that ? his achy thoughts wonder and still lying on
his back he raises his hands before his eyes and sees white stuff
coming from under his fingernails. He suddenly realizes with horror
what the stuff is ... his BRAINS ! Through blurred vision, his
consciousness leaving him , the man sees the gnome - same one
that guided him to the forest- approaching him with a straw in hand..."

what does tongue in cheek mean ?

The Bontazodans have found a wormhole in
the Ulmociin nebula . The wormhole
exists between the eyes of a giant
space snail and is activated only when
the eyestalks are fully extended .
On the other side of the wormhole the
Bontazodans found a strange new world.
They of course decided to explore this
world , but with since the wormhole
only opened on extremely irregular
intervals , and because they couldn't
yet control the wormhole in any way,
the Bontazodans decided to build an
outpost on the otherside. To this
outpost they would then bring supplies
and from there they would explore the
new world. The first time the wormhole
opened again after the construction of
the outpost the Bontazodans found their
precious building in smoking ruins.
A huge spacemonster was attacking it
with its rainbow-colored , hairy tail.
Their sensors recieving distress calls
and detecting lifesigns from the
smoking outpost , the Bontazodans
decided to send all their spacefleet
to bring down the monster and resque
their fellows from the ruins. In this
image , taken by a Bontazodan recon
vessel , the space monster is shown
defeated , bombarded to unconsciousness,
ready to be taken back for studies in
the Bontazodan homeworld .

YEP ,You knew it !! The Oishmud
Civilization's had enough !
There is no room for everybody , people
are dropping of planets , there's just
so many of them and there's no place for
them to go ! ´They got their hyperdrives
n such and that's sweet if you want to
populate a galaxy , but when the
galaxy's filled and you want to go on
and move on the road ends , the
distances become too great for the
Oishmud technology to span and the
Oishmudan brains to comprehend. Any
attempt to hyperjump from galaxy to
another result in the brains of the
astronauts refusing to follow the
jumpships so they get left behind and
freeze in space.
there is no way to stop this.
There is something to do , though. The
Oishmudans send envoys to their gods
complaining that they designed the
world wrong and that there needs to be
a change ! All envoys get turned back.
Outraged , the Oishmudans climb to their
greatest spaceships , mighty vessels
capable of catapulting stored lonely
stars found in space great distances,
going nova when they hit their targets.
The Oishmudan ships launch an
unimaginably huge assault on the gods,
taking each one by surprise and
burning several of them to ashes with
their NovaPults and DisbeliefRayguns.
The gods quickly take up arms to defend
their creation against the galaxy of
starving , maddened , desperate
Oishmudans...

k , now a reel 'serious' image !!!!!!!!

Mighty Cimergan Empire comes to end
when the Empress Herself lands on the
planet Kenou , capital of the Fiffel
Federation , with a huge landing force
to accept an unconditional surrender
from Commander Sabre , Chief of the
Fiffelian Armed Forces.
The Fiffel Federation lost 65 % of its
space fleet to the war with the
Cimergans , but what remains have been
hidden under a newly devised shield
generator in Kenou and its moon Paital.
The new shield needs only about 100
feet of water around the ship it
protects and it completely foils all
Cimergan sensors.
Bored , the Empress is not going to go
through the formal negotiations routine
and just orders a fighter to bomb
Commander Sabre and the island he waits
for on the negotiations to begin , to
bits.
The fighter approaches and sends the bomb away and immediately two missiles
head toward the bomb from under the
water to intercept it. At the same
time the hidden fleet emerges from
under the water and send their missliles
up to annihilate the Empress' landing
force. Her ships in space are surprised
by the rest of the Fiffel forces that
charge from the moon of Paital.
All ships destroyed belong to the core
of Cimergan fleet , being its major
offensive and defensive organ and the
empire disintegrates to smaller nations,
returning to relyong only on planetary
defense.

MechaHateChimp
10-23-2004, 10:35 PM
Ohhh, now thats nice! Almost like the opening scene in Saving Private Ryan but instead of soldiers getting taking out at first.. its entire ships! I love the idea of underwater ships taking the fleet with missles. Sick.

Weepeth the Queen , weepeth the King .
Weepeth the whole nation of Yeppeldee ,
for the Royal Sniffer has abandoned the
good rulers of the nation. Just out of
the castle and into the woods it walked.
The King and Queen are heartbroken ,
what in the world was it that they had
done wrong ? What had they done to
make the Royal Sniffer leave their side?

To make matters worse , the Sniffer is
soon found in the woods , but it is not
coming back. It sleeps by the side of
the new King , for whomever the Royal
Sniffer sides with is the purest of heart
in the Kingdom and the leader of the
nation. The Royal Sniffer's judgment
is infallible. Or so is thought.
MoonQuad , the inventor , a dubious
machine-creature , carefully closed
the secret compartment hidden in his
body , making sure the vent of the
compartment was open enough to let
the scent of the Irriso-flower reach the
nostrils of the Royal Sniffer , who lay
sleeping at his feet. Being the only
thing that attracted the sniffer more
than Goodness and Righteousness
and Leadership , the flower was best
kept near the creature , but hidden
from the sight of others .

There were many who doubted MoonQuad,
doubetd him very much. But they couldn't
argue with the judgement of the Most
Honorable Royal Sniffer . So they decided
to make sure everything would be right and
hired a private detective , one Crosco Dillo ,
for the job. They soon realized Crosco would
have to hurry cause no more than three days
after Crosco had been hired MoonQuad had
sent fleet after fleet of Yeppeldeean space
navy to make allies with nations as dubious
as MoonQuad himself and then some.
The rest of the Yeppeldeean navy was to
enslave those of the former allies that would
protest the new alliances.

-Thhaanks flyinP !

-duddlebug , yea steamships !! kinda something like steampunk,
Jules Verne , Arcanum , childhood stories , Captain Nemo , that Smashing
Pumpkins video , stuff like that :)

-Ranath , hmm, maybe a bow that shoots Stingers or sumthin..

-andreasrocha , yea I came up with the moon idea and wrapped the
story around that

-NinjaASSN , i just may post a few less sketches this competition to
get a better end result , having more time to work on the pic.
In machineflesh contest it was like 2 months of concepts and less than
1 doing the actual pic , which almost wasn't enough :)

-Hecartha , yea Muncausen , forgot that one , thanks ! Another mention of
the Grimm book , dunno if I've heard about that one , gotta check that out

-LuisNCT , k , gotta check that one out too , haven't read that many books :)

-Russel , eh ,umm , sorry , grand space battle coming up in the next sketch,
guess I have one "no-bg-story-just-the-pic" concept in each competition

-thanks eupee, azazel & hentsteph !

-voodoofactory , I'm not quite sure how I would implement it either...Anywayz,
it's pencil on paper , colored a bit in photoshop and layed on a background photo
of an old yellowed paper

- gabrielsimon , douglas adams grrreat! always something from his crazy stuff
hopefully in my concepts !

yea thanks all , next up , as mentioned , Grand Space Opera skecth with no story :

Cool ship with the eyes and pionted teeth.

Bishoppess of Death
10-25-2004, 05:55 PM
Nice. I like the color scheme (and the lady mentally electrifying the guy in armor) but the greenish ships in the bottom are bugging me. They keep taking my eye out of the picture (when I know they should probably be drawing me in). I think part of that is because of the direction the fish ship is going. It's passing the rest of the scene completely by. Hrm. It's to be thought about (on my part)

R-K
10-25-2004, 06:03 PM
wow, lots of stuff happening in latest, maybe you should reduce amount of stuff appearing a bit, it's a bit cluttered. Nicely sketched though.

Squibbit
10-25-2004, 06:11 PM
uhm , bishoppess, yea , I think it's the hand , sorta like halts the movements of the ships,
or reverses it even. Dunno for sure cause it didn't affect me that way :)

fish ship ? yea ugly fish, heh , anyways , comin up extra stuff in the fish ship area , so it
might look different then

ranath i know , i made it like a movie poster , but cluttered

I too remember your thread from machine flesh and thinking to myself how absurdly good the concept sketches were... watching your thread develop was 75% of the fun. you seem to have kept to form with this project.

NinjaA55N

Im still a fan of the weepeth the king :) That last concept is true like a movie poster, but a bit too messy for my taste.

duddlebug
10-26-2004, 08:00 AM
This one's like a 70s film poster!!

Love the idea... i think maybe you could play with scale of the various elements. For instance, i think the woman's head could be even more promininet in the composition. I like the ship with teeeth and the dude who looks like the creature frfom the blakc lagoon!!

When you gonna decide which way you're heading? (no rush... still 83 days to go... just curious)

Squibbit
10-26-2004, 08:38 AM
duddlebug ,
I think I'm gonna go with this latest one . Never really done a smooth , sharp , detailed
picture of this size before and I want to give it a shot .
And all the stuff in the sketch are like basic elements , so as you said they can be
altered in size and brought up and put back as wanted later on.

black lagoon creature...heh at one point most of the stuff in the sketch was greenish
cause i just got stuck with the color, but i might make him something like that :)

I'm gonna try to make the ship with teeth look fast and smooth and, while at the same
time looking like it was custom built from scrap metal and spare parts..ummh.. sumthin
like that...sorta like millenium falcon u know

also should add more unusual design in the pic , it is a Grand Space Opera afterall :)

Space Admiral Happy Memes built himself a dog.
He loved the dog dearly and it followed
the admiral everywhere he went in the
galaxy to wage war .
Admiral Memes was a freelencer who
started wars and then offered to finish
them for a phenomenal fee . He was a
pheomenal admiral and tended to win his
wars so the dog saw a lot of battle.
Until it disappeared. Totally unaware of
how accustomed he had become to the
presence of the dog beside him on the
battlefield , the admiral Happy Memes
was shattered by his loss. His advisors
knew if Doggy wasn\'t found soon the
admiral , in his current sorrow-filled,
pitiful state , might just lose his
first battle ever. And that battle was
just a few days away ...

Borl would carry little Woonyacks home,
thier NEW home. Old home , Galaxy 371 ,
been deteriorating , reducing in size ,
until in the end it shrinked even faster
than Woonyacks themselves! But Woonyacks
found their saviour in Borl , traveling
salesman of surfboards . Not only knew
Borl of an uninhabited minigalaxy for
the Woonyacks to live in , he also had
the perfect temporary special environment
for the little people to travel in : his
own bloodstream. (He also promised to
make them teeny weeny surfboards on the
long journey to the new home) .

NinjaASSN ::--> thanks for the poster idea! definitely gonna use it !

Shadow Seraph --> the fun stuff is usually drawn out like bunny from
the hat. It's fast and fun to do . Really trying to
improve my art cause then again the serious stuff
with correct lighting , smooth lines , right colors
and composition is like real slow and tedious work,
although it's fun too , otherwise I wouldn't do it.
But with the serious stuff I rarely get even near
where I wanted to .
I use an HB pencil and photocopy paper for some
sketching. Some stuff I do straight with Photoshop.
I don't really use anything else.
Oh yeah and at home I must draw with mouse
cause I only got Wacom at work.

i only post this cause i sorta promised
:/

A plot waaay too long to describe here
by the Wizard Hippylol brought end to
the Wazzat Confederation's mighty space
fleet. The plot took years to execute
but in the end it brought the Wazzat
ships in vicinity of planet Idonlikepepsi ,
where Hippylol had established a great
magnet system that pulled the Wazzatian
vessels from the space and crashing down
on the planet's surface. This image was
taken by a maintenance droid from the
safety zone that's under the magnet
towers , where the magnets have no effect.

"It was one magical moment" -was heard
said by the Wizard Hippylol of the event.

yes , ok , now this is gonna change much cause
it looks way too starwarsy , but I think I wanna do this...
The characters are gonna be many and varied , cause it's space opera and
it's galactic peacetalks and you just
can't avoid that.
Two great nations are negotiating peace.
In the background their space fleet
face eachother off.
It's not yet really funny at all and
that worries me more than a little ... :(

Russell-Nash
11-05-2004, 08:22 PM
Hey I really like this one. For sure you have to change some things to get rid of the star wars touch but it definitely has the grand space opera touch.

nice work u made with the restaurant in your Space Opera entry , Russel,
as it happens , this event of mine is happening in a space station restaurant :)

to do with all the people , buildings , spaceships and all ... luckily it's a
long competition :)

Blackarts

V_Shane

It's not yet really funny at all and

Well, you could add subtle humor; have two flags, one representing each side. One flag is a naked alien (or the butt of an alien) and the other flag is one of just underwear! Two civilizations that were destined to be together :scream:

Well, its jsut an idea :hmm:

Tommy Lee
11-05-2004, 10:09 PM
Yeah, the last one has this grand scale feeling to it.
About the humor.... I know what u mean, the same thing happens to me right now. I am going very serious and not so sick'n twisted as usual. It's a hart task to get it going on this subject.
Anyway... we'll try our best, right?:D

Cheers

Hi

The concept named with many ? reminds me for the Adventures of Baron Münchhausen.
I think it would be a very unique idea to mix the fairytale stories of great "fabled" travelers with myths and technology of a space era. I like this concept and I like this picture.
Best wishes

Speaky
11-06-2004, 12:21 AM
Hey Squibbit, I'm liking that last one. Good epic scale... planet, huge starships and some human drama going on, it's a classic mix. I'd like it more if the ships in the bg were oriented a little differently. they're a bit regular at the moment.

Interesting comment about the humour issue... by their very nature, space operas need to take their themes so seriously that they are in danger of coming full circle and becoming parodies of themselves. That may just be my way of looking at it!

Squibbit
11-06-2004, 05:42 AM
yea Speaky, I know, the ships look regular, that bothered me too.
when I tried to change them it easily looked like the scales were tilted
for one team or another, though... got to work on it a bit more.

You know Panu........These look fine,in fact real good, the compo the whole thing,but...................................................Knowing your creativity and imagination you can do way better.......These are kind of run of the mill, regular, nothing too too exciting, good sure, but not what I would expect from you.........I think you have one incredible imaginative mind, one of the most creative and exciting minds you can come across........I just think you have to go with your natural self, your way out creative self...........For example if you ask me, I would love to see the "Admirals dog"..........The tree concept..........Or the traveling surfboard salesman "Borl" all mixed into your designs/art.........These are the kinds of creations/thoughts that I think make you special.......It can be any of the above,or all new creations done in this manner..........I think you should go with those quirky off the wall, wild and fun zany ideas of yours, just let yourself go,be free with what you feel like doing, and in the end you will still have your own rendition of a Space Opera.......Your ideas and style stand out and are "Special",you should continue in your own way,.........Just one guys thoughts here..........heres to seeing your space opera get that true Panu touch.......... :arteest:

yet in it ánd they're gonna be a pic part of the pic , many and varied.
I've worked the pic a bit more and I'm still not pleased with the overall look though.

dunno , maybe I'll rework the sketch , gotta do some 3d for change ,

now i see, i hasitated too much with posting my idea/s ... (two huge fleets etc :))

and about the humor in your picture: i don`t think it`s necessary, peace negotiations are a very serious matter and your picture should spread that message and feeling

Duke John
11-07-2004, 04:30 PM
The peacetalks concept looks very promising! But since peace isn't that exciting, perhaps you could show how peace was almost achieved until one of the leaders spilled his coffee over the other. So close but then total war began because a leader lost his dignity...

Our interstellar travels began many years ago . Never
before had we travelled outside our own solar system ...
blah blah ... it was not your usual starship we travelled with...
blah blah blooah..blah...yaawn..blah ..zzzz...blah blah..

...so we had these giant ants that flew with many times the
speed of light here and there through our galaxy and since
the ants didn't much care where they were going we built
a guidance system ,passenger pods and cargoholds on their
exoskeletons and used them as FTL spaceships.
We also had hightech emergency systems onboard .
This was beacause the ants didn't have long lifespans and
when they got older their antlers (which were crucial to
guiding the ants FTL flight safely) withered and dropped
away. Not only this , the ants also got faster when they got
older. So people hung on to the older ants because of their
mighty speed and then tried to drop away at the last moment
when the antlers of the old ant fell off and the creature
stumbled uncontrollably with ever increasing speed into
a nearby star or planet.

..blah blah..

Your latest idea is, as usual, quite imaginative. I imagine a final based on this would have a very organic feel to it.
I gotta say though, of all the concepts, I still like the first a lot. I've never really seen that kind of idea utlized, and while it's humorous, the perspective still gives it a somewhat serious look.
I still want to know which one will turn into your final though :|.

Its sure a nice starting point for a pic, but i think that something grand is missing. Probably coz of fullness of all those elements which dont let the picture to breath. U have a big planet from the right side, some sculpture in the left and a big moon/planet at the center of ut image... u completly closed the picture, put its limits and capture it in the square. Made ur canvas wider, make a widescreen movie format and put those planets away... I think that the action in the first plan and the detail in the background, where those little animals r jumping into the spaceships tells enough.

Squibbit
11-17-2004, 10:47 PM
you're right , ninja , hehe I already made the blue planet-thingy smaller twice cause

that's gonna be an evil monster town on te left and it could do with a bit more space,
what u think ?

and yes ,that pic looks hideously boxed , heh , that was what troubled me too

also , ms.Luvv gonna have some little helpers , like Santa's elves , hehe

love the idea and your origional concept sketch is pure genius, but your first concept sketch with colour is not what i expected. Don't know what i expected exactly but it just seems a bit static andn closed in . . . not as fun as i had hoped. . . but then it nis early days and i am sure you will leave me spellbound with your final image . .. tired when I drew that , but decided to post it anyways and it was a good
thing , cause all the feedback really help in creating the pic I want for the
final image , thanks .

heh , later on in the evening (well, night) I got even more tired and thoughts
started to wander and I started thinking like what if people never got past
baby phase and nature just adapted to that and started producing all kinds
of automatons like diaper crawler , baby washer bubble box creature and the
little reindeer that runs to hungry babies and explodes into ready burgers of
all healthy sorts :)

The Emperor is dead. Scourge of the galaxy , the most foul creature
ever to exist ,Emperor Darkspace has been destroyed in an epic
battle that destroyed the planet Weva and the races of Tsaci and
Hilleren. The Emperor will rise again - that's his plan anyways. He
has a clone hidden in a faraway palace , and the secret way of
reviving it that requires blood of cute little things corrupted by
monster blood has been activated. The Emperor has captured hundreds
of the little ones in case of emergency such as this. But once again
the number one hero of the known universe is there to ruin the
Emperor's plans. Miss Luvv has arrived and has set free the little
creatures so their blood cannot be given to the clone and she's
fighting the emperor's personal guards so that none of the little
ones get recaptured and the evil emperor is destroyed once and
for all.

But has the Emperor gotten enough blood already? Can his hideous plan
still succeed?? Is our beloved hero and her little helpers too late ???

EDIT: that painting/statue in the bg depicts the emperor and his eternal
imperial chain that curls around to constrict all space and its galaxies.
At the emperor's feet are flags of defeated and enslaved worlds.

Wow, crazy path you have taken from the first concept sketches to this current painting. Nice job, I like the direction it is going in. I think the basic idea is there, and now all you need to do is work on the execution of the painting.

There are a couple of things that catch my eye in your latest -

- maybe you can zoom out a little bit, or make the canvas larger so that the elements on the edges are not cut off; for example, the statue on the left side is being hit, but it is almost off the page. Zooming out would also let you show a bit more of the environment. What I *can* see looks pretty cool - you should emphasize that grand scale in there.

- the figures are not completely following the perspective scheme you have set up, unless they are all different heights...

- lighting is a bit flat right now; there are no obvious light sources or areas of shadow. I think you have some opportunities to create a dramatic, theatrical lighting scheme.

Squibbit
11-24-2004, 08:24 AM
---yea OKMER (umm..'my SpaceBra?'..ok... :) ) as said before,
there is going to be a spaceship outside...looking like a steamship...
thinking it would act as a rescue vessel.

---thanks , francis001 , you're right , I was worried about the canvas not
being the right size... will try a wider version , although the last time
i did that i ended up enlarging the canvas idefinitely..
(it's probably somewhere enlarging now as i type)

and the figures are just hasty smudges , they're not that accurate at all;
I don't even know yet if I'm gonna draw them in different sizes or same size.

LIGHTING...arg....talking about a weakness... *wanders off to take another look
at Speaky's sketches* 'hmm..so that's how it's done'...
Yea of course I'll go for dramatic and theatrical...no idea what I'll get , tho
