Practice make perfect,
but nobody is perfect so why practice?
('cuz we are crazy fools of coz!)
Keep going man. Art is partly an endurence test. I think of it as an real-life RPG, keep fighting and leveling up your artistic skills... :arteest:
Anyhoo don't forget to have a rest too.

Hey! I like the look of that droid. Great looking model and the color is really cool. Perhaps it looks a bit to plastic but that olive look is just great - keep it up and good luck!

Nice work there on that platform. Coming along great, nice details on that robot. Looking good. Keep at it, you will only realize your dreams when you have chased them long enough to allow yourself to see the full perspective of what you can accomplish. Just remember, anything can be correct from a certain point of view.
your differents models are very good and maybe funny...:thumbsup:your platform texture miss of details, you may add more degradation.

looking very nice there Darko. Good job on modeling and texture mapping. The contest rules state no-prefabs. Which means perhaps you should take a stab at trying to produce something for a texture vs just finding it. Just a suggestion... :P

It looks good Darko. But maybe quick test with wings and guns in other colors. I would set the same color as the ship but with different saturation and brightness.

Hi darko..................Looking good, nice work there.......You know I think it would be best by a long shot for you to create your own textures for this model,it's a great time for you to learn more and expand your knowledge..........Your doing a fantastic job for a 17 year old,and I give you lots of extra credit for that........Your sticking with it,and thats the first big step, seeing this through to the end........Ok,nice modeling there, and all the best as you continue.....:arteest:

Found that If I don't have a texture on hand for a project, it almost always takes less time for me to create a new one than to search the web for the "perfect" texture, and then tweek it to work with a model.
Textures. There's an excellent article on texturing by Leigh Van Der Byl in issue 59 of 3dWorld magazine (and Bryce 4 free!), and Leigh has an excellent tutorial on texturing on her website.
Hope these help.

Normally Maya was very cool with large scene and old machine... I do this experience all days...
Do you try to do some references with a lot of external file ? that's may permit you to manage big file...
If you have a lot of similar vessels, do you use instance copy... ? and if yes... by experience... it's better to save in this case in maya ascii... Maya Binary is more light but you can't recover the contents of your file if your computer block...
Do you send render in command line... with maya close... ?
Like that, you save lot of memory and you reduce risk of problems when you save the final file...
There's some ideas... I hope you can continue the challenge boy... you actully done a good work...now, you must finish your scene... courage

Hi darko..................Well the solution for your cloud particles would best be met in composting......That will eleviate all the memory issues,at least most of them.I think that would be great practice for you too,as with composting you can have so much more freedom in larger scale scenes,etc,etc....Layers of models are now possible due to composting......
.......Your scene is a real battle, very much a space opera with action........Your doing a real nice job here, and learning and advancing a great deal........I give you lots of credit,a 17 year old with school, girls, and more girls ;) ..........but still getting a full scene done, great effort and you should keep this work ethic,as sooner than later it will all pay off for you big time........
.......Keep going hard, get this done,I applaud your efforts, and growth with your work,it's coming along nicely, and with this challenge you have crossed yet another stepping stone to getting where you ultimatley want to get to..............Go strong darko........ :arteest:

heya ... mates :(
... i am having here problems... biggg biggg ...
if this competiotion didn have ... this theme ... massive... opera.... to have a lot of detail and everything it would have been much better for me :(
...
when i turn on my scene... i work 2-5 minutes in it and then it starts to bug... cant move... rotate move... it goes frame by frame... need 2-3 minutes just to put simple text...
and then i am forced to restart my computer.. because my hardwer profile says ... that my processor is usig 99% of it power ... and i am left for my scene 1%
... terible... dont think i will finish on time... hate my computer hate everything....
.... i wll keep on trying...

Keep the faith brother, I think you can try navigating through your viewports using only bounding boxes.
Or another more effective way is to work on your background and foreground seperately, rendering seperately as well. Eg, render the background and set that image as the bg for your foreground.
Cheers brother, don't give up

:(((
does anyone know what is the problem... how can i solve it! ?!?!?!?? please people
2. i lost HD space on one particion ... have 500 mb left... and on other 13 gb... but maya ... continues to eat memorie... dont know how... but i have erased everyfile and still ... it goes on! :(
please ppople help me to solve 1 problem... I WANNA FINISH THIS COMPETITION IT HAS BEEN HARD TO ME BEFORE BECAUSE OF SCHOOL AND EVERYTHIN AND NOW WHEN I AM SO CLOSE... this happens :(

12-31-2004, 06:45 AM
All that's very strange... what's your config and weight of your scene ? (nbr of poly and mo of the file in .ma)...
For your geometrie prob... if you don't find the bad geometry... you must do some render test step by step, with removing part by part in your scene, to isolate the incriminate geometry...
But in first... maybe you can export the containt of the file... previously for sure, freeze all the part, delete history of all and a optimize scene file... after, you import this export in a new clean Maya file... and your retry...
For the moment... I can't say more... of your problem...

I fear that, with a setup like this, you will make a "space chamber opera" instead of a "grand space opera". A platform such as this one should be one of many stages where your space opera should be held.

If i were you Darko, id kindly ask all of these people to start giving me some useful advice instead of taps on the back. You know best if you can finish or not, and i hope you will, without the turbo activation.
Anyway, about this last set of images, try to make a few different character poses, 3-4 will sufice, rotate them, mirror them, this way they look like graphics from space invader - just a bunch of Xs with eyes.
Also fix the bridge uv problem, assign different uvs to the tiled surface, and rotate the two accordingly.

pailhead hm... what is wrong about tap?
A pat on the back is nice. But if all you get is pats, you usually get nowhere. Sometimes people need a push. In some extreme cases even a kick in the ass. :D
thnx mates there will be update soon!
Hope you'll change either the texture on the ETs or on the building or the lighting. Everything is GREEN!
Then, if what you posted last is the finished composition, I'd change that too. Will there be a ship close to the camera? If not, your picture lacks focus.
Then, listen to pailhead. Change the postures.
This isn't meant as an attack. What I said are details in comparison to what you've done this far. But important details.
Nemoj sad na kraju zeznuti. :) (Translation: Don't mess it up at the end.)

I think the camera is far away from the main scene try some other angle. It would be nice if you put some ships in the air some air fight. The generators are interesting, have some time playing with the light, and you can put some fog on the ground. I wish you luck and keep going with the great job hope you will finish it soon.

Looks good, although I'd give the camera a low angle view. That way it'll look a lot bigger and dramatic. Perhaps you could place the camera just above and behind the soldiers, so that you can see them in detail too.

01-08-2005, 05:03 PM
If you are sure that your models are detailed enough and that you will be able to make decent enough textures, go with a camera closer to the scene.
erlik
01-08-2005, 06:03 PM
And even if the aliens are not detailed enough, you should make them the protagonists. So lower the camera until you see them close. Like, a couple of meters above them. I'd show you a way to compose the pic, but I cannot post attachments in your thread.
Or take joe's suggestion to the extreme and put the camera completely low, so the aliens loom like giants running towards the ship. Then raise the buildings so the city is all around them.
But in any case: camera much closer, put what you want to stress at ... let's say, a third of a side of the picture, so you've got the classic composition.

This is coming along nicely. I would agree on changing up the positions a bit the characters look a bit on the stiff side. Keep at it!

nice tests Darko!
1. stay with this camera angle, but also with the ship setting from the previous test. It looks much better there.
2. Increase the contrast between the lighten/shadowed areas.
3. On the previous test this light from the bottom looks cool(but not this color), so add many small glowy lights on the platform's florr, and you will get better looking platform and better looking lighting on the ship.

any suggestion ... ah... blah noone is going to answer... :(

few advices on light:
for a start:
- try deeper orange for the keylight, make it really strong and turn on faloff/decay (however it's named in your software), so light fades like in real world (inverse square). That way is easier to get away from uniform light distribution in the scene. You may have to crank up the light up to 1000 or so :), this is the main shadow source as well.
- for fill / ambient, try few directional lights placed around your scene, with blue or violet colour (again, deep, not very bright shade), you can try subtle soft shadows here
- try placing not too strong, orangish light so it catches the upper edges of the objects - this simulates skylight a bit and 'cuts out' your objects from the background. This one may need soft shadows.
- some subtle light from the bottom, again blue/violet, to simulate light coming from below, again soft shadows
-generally make the shadows deeper, stronger. You may have to render shadows separately for that
, and try to avoid crisss-crossing patterns from that soft shadows i mentioned above.
- then play with local lights, to make certain areas more important than other ones, this may take a lot of tweaking and time ;)
When you are happy with the light, you may render ao pass and multiply it over the image, to get contact shadows and darken all the crevices and bring out the detail. Some fog or atmosfere may as well add some depth to the scene. Than play with it in post, play with levels and various color correction tools... Other thing, more widescreen cropping would fit the image better. Hope that helps a bit.
edit: make that metal texture much smaller, it throws off any scale relationsips.

Hey Darko, Excelent updates, outer of the lighting suggestion Azazel allready gave u, I have another observation: At that hight, wind blows like hell, maybe make some cylinder like walls, to give the scene a feel of safetyness, but if u change the background, maybe it won't be necesary, it depends of the back :)

Nice work!!
Perhaps it's just me, but i think that the first background is nice, i like this little orange color.
It make the scene less cold... but it's just my opinon.
You can for exemple, add some details on the background, another platform, or some structure merge in the sky... we can see just a little.

looks good, but there must be something inder the platfor as well. The building on th eright looks strange if it's not seen under the platform, so maybe make it longer. You can aslo try to copy those buildings(connected like in some tests before) and paste vew of them in the distance with different angles. You can change their colors a bit in photoshop after rendering.

I see you made some progress with the light :). Two things, at the moment:
- the light from below is bit too strong, i'd tone it down at least by half
- specular highlights can tell a lot about size of things - make them much, much smaller. Not weaker, just smaller, and possibly sharper.

Final Image Size
http://www.cgnetworks.com/images/spacer.gif
Your final image dimensions should be print resolution (as large as you can possibly render). Do not send in a low-resolution placeholder and ask us to get back to you, as we won't.
http://www.cgnetworks.com/images/spacer.gif
A guideline is 2657 pixels wide and/or 3636 high, 300 DPI (portrait), or
3636 pixels wide and/or 2657 pixels high, 300 DPI (landscape). Your image
aspect ratio and layout will dictate the final resolution. These are given
as guidelines. To be safe, render images that are larger than these
specified.
DO NOT upsample your images to achieve higher resolution. If you cannot reach the desired full-page resolution, just send in what you have.
Information about the final file submission will be emailed to all contestants in December 2004. We will only accept final submissions in January 2005.

looking good my friend! I think taht you could try to change the laser shots to the red color. I think it may fit better to the color palette of the image.
erlik
01-16-2005, 01:41 PM
Composition and colouring is much better than before.
Pity you didn't have the time to change the postures.
But the most important thing is that you're finishing the picture.

And Here it is FINAL!
ok now i have to say a couple of words....
- This competition was very hard for me... last 10 days i worked over day and night... because my computer didn`t want to co-operate. So i am very tired... and if my school if finishing in 10 days... if i don`t start to study now ... i wont be pleased with my grades... neither will my parents :( ... Rendering problems were great pain in the ass... so i let my comp render and i go to party come back at 3:00 AM and sit down at computer try to be quiet as much as i can ... and not to wake up my parents... there were days when telephone woke me up ( some friend calling ) and i was sleeping on keyboard.... ( belive me very painful expierience ) ... But thnx to u people ( thank u! u have been very kind to me) that pushed me forward... and helped me trough my work somehow i managed to finish this competition....
i know there are some things that could have been better... but ... no time... :(
I have learned a lot of stuff during this compet. ...
AND! the best thing that happend here is new friends... and i think it is the best thing that happend to me since i started with 3D...! that would be my little speach ... don`t wanna make u cry! :D

01-16-2005, 10:02 PM
Wow ! uploading your pic with a 52k modem is a real true challenge !!!:D
By the way I read your little speech and it reminded me when I began working with 3d software 4 years ago. The more important thing (to my mind) in those challenges is to finish the work (I won't add "whatever the cost" because you don't have to die in the name of 3d :D). Sometimes it works, sometimes not but there is always something to learn, if not from the others from yourself. (I speak like an old 3d grandpa when I'm just a beginner, that's insane ).
Anyway I wish we well meet in the next challenge for a tough fight !!
I'll be back !
By the way : your picture is very cool. Interesting beginning !
