Think big – really, really big! This is your opportunity to create an iconic image that captures a pivotal moment in a vast galactic spanning civilisation... a civilisation so vast that the only thread holding it together is a shared legacy of common legends. Legends of heroes, of heroic battles won against unimaginable odds, of crushing defeats and enemies that swarm through entire galaxies. Legends of utopian worlds, of vast planetary cities, of whole suns enclosed. Legends of secret sects and empire spanning conspiracies. Legends of oppression and abject poverty. Legends of artists, of scientists, of religious leaders, of political leaders.

For full details, please visit the official Challenge webpage at:
http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/

Your Mission
Create an iconic image that captures a moment of galactic civilisation or conflict. Entrants are to construct an entire, complete scene depicting anything that is relevant to the grand space opera theme.

Images should be iconic – the stuff that legends and myths are built from. The subject could be an individual or group, a space ship or fleet, a city or city-world. Whatever it is, it should capture a pivotal moment that is part of a vast galactic civilisation or conflict.

Two categories will run simultaneously for the Grand Space Opera Challenge: 3D Stills and 2D Illustrations. This Challenge is a Work-In-Progress Challenge -- all contestants are required to post their work-in-progress images for community to critique/comment in order to qualify.

one question: can i choose a well known galaxy (like Star Wars) or
must i invent a whole new galaxy from scratch?

No no no - all concepts must be 100% original. You can draw inspiration from such existing concepts but your own entry must be original please.

Please be sure to aquaint yourselves sufficiently with the challenge rules:

http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/instructions.php

Be original. Anything to close to a published image will be excluded to avoid any potential copyright violations. It's fine to be inspired by Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Stargate, Babylon 5 or any pre-existing stories, but no copies please.

Branko

as far as the grand prize is concerned... :)

http://www.cgnetworks.com/challenge/grandspaceopera/prizes.php

what does 'USA only' next to 'Softimage XSI for Windows' mean? does it mean that only US citizens get XSI together with this wonder-Boxx ? and what if someone from outside the USA wins? does he/she get the comp 'only' or something instead of XSI [like 500 bucks :) ] ? or maybe what it means is that only Americans get XSI for windows and the rest of the world linux versions ;)

Can a person have more than one entry if they start to seperate WIP threads?

Traditionally, the answer to that question has been no, not in the same category. You can have one 2d entry & one 3d entry so long as they're different ideas.

Don't know if this has been noted yet, but the Submit Entry page says "Note: Fraudulant images/joke images/images that are not intended for the Machineflesh Challenge will be removed without notice, and the user disqualified from the Machineflesh Challenge." Not a big deal, but you might want to edit that.

*stresses stresses* If this challenge had come up 2 years later I'd have been more than happy to participate but nnoooo now I have to work on my school grades, study german and all that, barely have time for drawing. Frustrating.
Anyways, the theme is AMAZING, it leaves so much for your imagination, but in order to get a good result you need the nice skills only someone with experience has.
Sorry for the blabble, just.. a bit frustrated at the timing lol. But that doesn't mean I won't draw! My teeny-tiny talent will take part in this! *nods nods*

For 2D Illustrations
Concept Sketch - JPG (online)
Line Art - JPG (online)
Coloring WIP - JPG (online)
Final Coloring - JPG (online)
Final Image - JPG (online) AND print resolution TIF (FTP)
Any challenger that does not submit the above images by 17 January 2005, will not quality for final judging.

And what if an artist normally creates a few concept sketches, and then throws in colours immediatly, without doing a lineart piece? 'Cause I usually don't do lineart. Please clear this up? Does this mean I have to work this way?

Kind Regards
Mr. Pixel! :D

I got some great feedback last challenge and ended up with an image that I really liked! You can already see how many entrants there are so dont worry too much about getting lots of replies, just keep going and have fun.

The challenges are exciting and a really rewarding experience.
