Title: Arachnid: Desert Scorpion
Name: Daniel Kvasznicza, I-netgrafx
Country: Austria
Software: CINEMA 4D, Photoshop

Hi there!

Scorpions have always fascinated me, so I couldn't resist to modell one of that interesting creatures ...

I used various photoreferences via google to start off. For modelling and rendering I used Cinema 4D 8.5 and Photoshop 7 for texturing.

The foreground sand is a photoreference, the background is a mattepainting.

Critiques and comments are always welcome!

Thanks for viewing!

The sand is this time cg using a procedural material,
all other textures are handpainted with Painter 8 and Photoshop 7.

Skill. Perfect model, well incorporated into the background. Your second picture really shows off the detail.

I really like the way you've lit the scorpion and your textures, as well as the reduced colour palette you've chosen.

My only comment would be those black shadows cast by the scorpion onto the ground. Can you do something to make them look a bit more radiosity-like (for lack of a better word). What I mean is they lack colour depth and I realize it's not your fault but probably due to the way your software renders (it's a scanline render, right?). I don't mind it so much in the bottom pics but in the top one it looks like your scene should be lit by a diffuse source like a sunset blocked by cloud cover, therefore the shadows should be softer (and maybe more purple?) and we should be able to see some details in the shadowed areas. Maybe move the light source towards us a bit so the shadow moves more behind the scorpion.

It seems like a minor quibble but with such a simple scene the small details become much more prominent.

Also for the sake of the composition i might move the scorpion in your main image a little to the left so if you were to divide the image into thirds he would be sitting on the line that would divide the left third from the middle third.

Sorry if I've gone on too long but the worthless fanboy one liners really annoy me - hey guys if you're going to post something, then post something of value please!

Beautiful job so far, btw. Cheers.

Can you do something to make them look a bit more radiosity-like.I used soft shadows, therefore it doesn't get its right color depth!

Actually I want to focus on the desert version, which shows up more details of my modelling and texturing. But I finalized the desert version first.
I look if I could render an ambient occlusion or gi pass to get its right realism.
Thanks for the tipps by the way, TroutMaskReplica!

I've updated the egyptian and the desertversion (last two pics) with a bigger version and
with resampled shadows, which should show more details.

software renders (it's a scanline render, right?).
Cinema 4D is a scanline renderer.
But I think it has done its job quite fast, I kept the rendering time below 12 minutes at HDTV resolution (1920x1080).
