Julia Roberts will voice an ant named "Hova" in Warner Bros.' and
Playtone's Ant Bully, the CGI animated film written and being directed
by Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius helmer John Davis (DNA Productions), reports Variety.

Also in the colony are Shirley MacLaine, Paul Giamatti, Alan Cumming,
Cheri Oteri and Ricardo Montalban. Roberts will voice her part sometime
over the next month.

The film is based on the illustrated children's book by John Nickle
about a mischievous boy who menaces an ant colony and destroys its
anthill with his water gun. He's shrunk to insect size and sentenced to
hard labor in the colony. Newcomer Zach Tyler will voice the shrunken
kid, Lucas Nickle.

The trade adds that Playtone is also nearing a production start on a
live-action adaptation of the Maurice Sendak book Where the Wild Things
Are, with Spike Jonze directing for Universal.

Just because Ant Bully has ants for many of the main characters, doesn't mean it's the same old CG ant movie. Although Antz and A Bug's Life were somewhat different stories it's true they had rather alot of similarities. However, if you read the John Nickles' book you'll see there's quite a different take on this story. hmmmm...or maybe Ants will become a new CG animation genre. ha.

And for another CG fish story, Shark Tale seems to be doing OK, although I didn't like it myself. Wonder what the third fish tale will be...maybe somebody will remake The Incredible Mr Limpet.

Then you have the 3rd (or is it 4th) version/retelling of King Kong, but now it will be the Peter Jackson version....seems to me there's still some interest in that even though it's not the first or only King Kong movie. :)

well, there's a difference between 4 King-kong movies in 70 years and 3 ant movies in 7 years ;)

Ants are becoming to movies what Orc's are to RTS games.

Sad really....

Noone seems to be complaining about the multitude of superhero movies, the abundance of dog animated movies(All Dogs go to Heaven, Balto,101 Dalmations, Scooby Doo, Fox and the Hound, Oliver and Company,Lady and the Tramp), or cats(Aristocats,Garfield,Cats Don't Dance, Lion King), mice ( Secret of Nimh, the Rescuers, Stewart Little, American Tale, Great Mouse Detective), dinosaurs(Land Before Time, Dinosaur, Ice Age). Thats not mentioning the countless live action examples. Give the movie a chance, just because you've seen an cg ant before doesn't mean its the same movie.

Yeah and there's been more than 4 King Kong movies made, not to mention all the other movies about apes (Mighty Joe Young x 2, Kongo, Link, etc) :)

Hmmm, don't they know everyone's moved on to movies about fish? Didn't they get the memo?
Seriously though... all I care about is that it's good. More good CGI films are always welcome :)

Ants make the case, they are so much like us. They work within a hierarchical society, live in colonies, all working together to better the whole. Can you imagine any of these ant stories with something else?
