View Full Version : WIP - Swampy the, errm, thing. Yup.
lostlittleboy 10-16-2004, 12:52 PM Hello everybody! (Dr Nick stylee! http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/grin.gif )
This is my first WIP post, and after the Frankenstein thread, I almost ran away and hid! http://cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif I thought I'd have crack at this Zbrush/normal map thingamy, so here we go...
Only the concept and base model so far, but I'm not sure whether I should keep modelling into poly mesh, or let the normal map do the work for things like skin creases etc.
(I realise that the mesh is badly optimised, but at the moment I'm really not thinking about that sort of thing...)
Any crits really appreciated!

Pretty cool mesh.
You've got tris all over the place, but if that works who cares!
You'd be mad to model creases and small details. Just optimise the mesh for animation (if thats what you will use it for) and let ZB take care of the detailing. After all thats what it is best at.
Keep em comin!

Turns out ZB won't let me be lazy! http://cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon9.gif (no bad thing!)
I've just discovered you can't use GUTiling and have tri's; it causes tiny little holes in the normal map. Its obvious now. http://cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon12.gif
It looks a bit uninspiring at the moment though, seems to lose focus from the hips down especially. Any suggestions, or have I just been looking at it too long?

Oh,... I didnt know that!
I try to keep my stuff quads but thats just personal preferance. Most of the tris I see you could get rid of just by changing the mesh a bit if you wanted. Dont know what app you are using. There are also other forms of mapping in ZB but I never used them.

Well only thing I can suggest is anatomy. Good human anatomy in the parts that are human like will add drama to the model. Here is where you will add more focus to the other parts. Good muscle placement, mass and definition will add that 'wow' effect.
Surf through the wip threads here and you will find many good examples. Of course also hit the anatomy books.
Keep em comin.

hey man, don't let Frankie scare ya, he just wants to be your friend.
my advice, avoid tris in your mesh if you want to zbrush, tris make poles and poles are a real pain when it comes to zbrushing - as Kanga said.
umm...you mention optimization. don't worry about optimization unless the model is destined for a game engine, or you want to present it as game art - in my experience, the more polys in the base mesh, the better.
I'll check this thread out later for some updates hopefully :)
Cheers.

I agree with you both about tri's. I just got lazy when I modelled this... <slaps his own wrist>
KWAK - I didn't mean optimised as in "low poly", but just optimised as in "making the best use of the current topology". http://www.cgtalk.com/images/icons/icon10.gif
Well, here's the result of some ZBrush action...
I'm going to have to reexport the mesh from ZBrush and remodel those tri problem areas... I'm gonna have to be careful or I could easily destroy the current UV layout and lose all the ZBrush work...
(BTW do you guys know why my pics are coming out so compressed? I've tried tifs and jpgs, but thay all look crappy when I post them up...)
