View Full Version : Kai Krause (The maker of KPT, Bryce etc.)
Self-Designer 10-16-2004, 11:39 AM It's totaly not news, yet it's the 1st time i've heard about that, so excuse me for those who already know it or if there's a thread about it or any other reason for it not to be in the news.
However, the last paragraph in this article catched my eye:
Meta went to Nasdaq in 1995 for several hundred million in value, but Kai left Santa Barbara for his next idea: he acquired a 1000-year-old castle on the Rhein river, dubbed Byteburg, where he and a small team are developing his next generation software project, code-named "TimeDoubler", for release later in 2004. He also founded an incubator for small Startups with space for about 200 people in a second water-castle near Cologne. http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/bios/krause.html
Does anyone know anything about that?

Yeh, I know, that's why I didn't say it's really an objective news but more subjective. I may had to put it in the General Forum... Yet, I'm curious to know what happend with this project.

I'm interested - he used to be a very prominant figure in this industry and I haven't heard his name in years. What gives? Anybody?

i think i did read something about him in a german newspaper or computer magazin this year but i cant remember what it was, i think it had something todo with one of his last projects but wasnt interesting enough for me to remember (but iam not really sure it had something todo with graphics)
btw. i saw the castle once on a picture cool way to live =)
If I made Bryce; I'd be hiding in a castle too. :)

While the Byteburg site is mostly in German (http://www.byteburg.de) there is an interesting thing called the betaBook, which can be found and read at the following link:
http://www.byteburg.de/g/philosophical/betabook.html
The page itself is in German, but you can scroll the bottom of the page and click the last link called "betaBook". There you will have an option to select German or English and then you can read what Kai is up to and get a hint at this "time" thing.
Be warned ... it is very "wordy".

I bet it's one of these castles... (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&q=%22Bryce%22+%22castle%22+%223d%22)
I just wanted to add that when I was getting started in CG, I made hundreds of these kinds of scenes. :)

Bryce is not very "cool". There are many reasons for this. The UI Kai developed looks like something a kindergartner would design. Sure it is "purty" but it's awfully non-functional in many respects.
I could go on about Bryce's rendering engine as well as lack of features, but it'd be pointless. There's a reason I routinely dub MetaCreations as MeatCreations.
But I digress.
Every once in a while, I reinstall Bryce just to mess around with it. After about 30 minutes, I uninstall it and go back to Lightwave.

Bryce 3D was the reason I got into CG :) in fact, my 1st ever computer images were done in Bryce. so I owe a lot to Kai. also, one of my A-Level art projects was completed entirely in KPT, so cheers Kai!

Bryce is a nice learning program with a "cool" UI design which can make some very interesting images. Comparing it to Lightwave is rather silly.
It would be nice to find out what happend with the "TimeDoubler" mentioned, since it is late 2004 right now.

yeh the UI is real nice for beginners who would otherwise be daunted by a complex UI with millions of buttons and menus. don't forget it has the ability to paint a 3D landscape too. that was a really nice feature at the time.
Bryce is like pop music. It's great for beginners, then one day you move on to bigger and better things :)
i blame kai for introducing such interfaces. i find them ugly & bold and inspired so many other software developers to go this way, yuck. you feel like in teletubby-land.
but ok, for beginners & housewife's it's ok...
