"Bill Gates predicts a future for the entertainment industry in which traditional broadcast television is rendered irrelevant. It's a positive vision, however, because new and better business models made possible by technology are emerging."

I do not trust microsoft. I would not like to see ever last bit of digital technology under control of one corparation. Espeaccily one with the abusive track record of microsoft. The idea of all music video and entertainment content being under the grasp of one sole vorosious company is not a good idea.

Bill Gates often tours the world, speaking to Prime Ministers and world leaders, and telling them what the future in technology will hold.
Who does he think he is? It's rather ironic that Gates raves on about the future, but what did he ever invent? In fact, what did Microsoft ever invent? Microsoft got where it is by taking other peoples' ideas. Taking others' technology, or buying out other companies that had successful ideas.
For such a mammoth company, Microsoft is bereft of original ideas.

oh pish posh..........stop complaining about how microsoft is evil and all, making money and making more money is what capitalism is all about, microsoft deserves that, although they've had shares of mistakes, what company hasnt??? as long as they (companies) look forward into what's waiting for us, why not let them.
i hear a lot about how ppl complain cause they dont have as mucho money as other people, try working as hard as those people, maybe it'll change. companies make changes in our lives sometimes, sometimes good, sometimes bad....dont be afraid of changes.
cheerio.

He's been saying that for years now. Can't stand that dude, a few years ago he launched .Net which is the very framework of those idea's. I remember a speech where he announced that. Connect everything with everythingWhat scares me is that he is a good businessman so he might actually be able to get it done. Total world domination by Gates with .Net as his main weapon.
Ack well.. As long as wireless is not 100% secure, we don't have to worry me thinks.

because all microsoft wants is total control over everything. I don't want to be controlled! What if Linux dies away and microsoft doubles it's prices, and creates more of it's own standards? It's gonna cost us money, one way or the other!

Wooo, rage for the system! Making more money is what capitalism is about - yes, whoever said that 'capitalism' is either a good thing or a good reason for something? I personally think that Microsoft does some good things, yet is an awful market-player, a dishonest company and they certainly could do with some competition. Imagine that there were only one big company making games in the world - games would still be stuck in the pong-era without all the competition.

Yes, try and cheat and manipulate like them. Maybe you are forgetting that working harder doesn't mean more money. Heavens, Bill Gates would've been poor if he hadn't stole his ideas.
And I'm certainly not afraid of changes. It's the bad changes that I'm scared of.

When so called capitalist companies turn into monopolies, they hate competition and hence it's no longer capitalism at all but more like communism. One big company making everything for everyone, where is the innovation and research in that?

For such a mammoth company, Microsoft is bereft of original ideas. You might want to have a look at this:http://research.microsoft.com/ (http://research.microsoft.com/)
In particular:http://research.microsoft.com/research/detail.aspx?id=8 (http://research.microsoft.com/research/detail.aspx?id=8)
There are some fascinating papers (some admittedly a little math heavy) in the graphics area. It's also worth looking at Microsoft's submissions to Siggraph.
It's awfully easy to hit the biggest target...

.NET rocks big time and before any rabid Linux users wade in they should remember that (a) it's been submitted and accepted by ECMA (b) as such Microsoft has "let go" of it in that context (something Sun never did with Java) and (c) it's sufficiently good that the thinking portion of the Linux community are busy porting said ECMA standard to their platform of choice. In other words, shock horror, they recognize the value in it.

Broadcast TV will ceast to exist, no doubt. Imagine having a new wall mountable G5 iMac, and being able to just watch tv on it, download different episodes from Fox etc. Tivo it too if you want. It sure would be convenient.
