Title: Autumn
Name: Natascha Roeoesli
Country: Switzerland
Software: Photoshop
It might not be most original concept but I am somewhat intrigued to illustrate concept, sayings or ideas.
The idea I had before creating this was autumn to be a person guarding the passage from summer to winter. For myself autumn can be both - very playful (thinking of the leaves I used to kick around as a child) and depressing. Those are the things I wanted to include in this picture.
I started with a rough pencil sketch and then colored it in Photoshop 7. The (very messy) process can be seen on my website.
This was also the first piece I worked at in print resolution.

What shall I say, it's fantastic! playfull and depressing, well it sure is though I most like the change of color and wide wariety of colors that autumn brings along, something missing in your picture because there's a color eating depression all over it :D
cheers!

Beautiful work...I just think the net over her mouth doesn't add much...or perhaps darkening it, to make it more present.
Beautiful color scheme.
Kyena
10-15-2004, 08:08 PM
ah yeah the veil....one of very few details I had on a seperate layer in Photoshop.
I had it off completely then I added it again. I had it as full black veil - semi transparent and until almost the end I was not sure how to incorporate it. However I wanted to have it in as part of the "depressing image" together with her dark cloak.
I thought it was too distracting and interfering with her smile since I indeed tried out a darker version as well. It did confuse me eyes and cut into her facial expression imo.
Now looking at the finished piece I think it's probably a matter of taste..thanks for the feedback though. Very much appreciated :)

Very attractive piece, appealing character design--the young lady pictured has certainly won me over. The sepia-tone color palette certainly suits your "autumn" theme. I would suggest more detail, or perhaps darker values, in the background plane--she doesn't seem to be rooted very firmly in her environment.
Wonderful stuff.

Godness - thanks so much for all the feedbacks!
I noticed that the cropped version you see if you open the thread is a bit more sharpenned then the actual painting.
Nideep: if you click on the image and then look at the actual size - do you still have the impression the veins are too prominent?
rwijaya: yes I do - it's in my profile :)
mnewhart: I was not too sure about the background myself. But I decided to go with a simple one to not distract from the figure. However backgrounds are definately something I need to work on.
feverinlove: I think the initial sketch was fine (I have a very long neck myself ;)) but adding the cloak might have stretched her neck part unintentionally. I had several people mention that earlier too.
greanspam: thank you! :)

doh hell no :D
I am a bit overwhelmed on the feedback - so forgive me for stumbling along. And on top I was pretty hesitant to post here. Many thanks for makeing me feel so welcome.
I think the neck issue is the same that got mentioned earlier. The actual sketch was ok I guess but I screwed up the perspective/propotions with adding the cloak. Definately something I can learn from for my future paintings.
beautiful!!
the smile on her face gave life to her.

hmmm. If you look at the face out of context from the rest of the image, it looks (to me) just like one you might see in an ad. This bothers me a lot... probably because I feel that it's important for artists to distinguish their work from photography.
I think one reason for this association is that the teeth are so ridiculously bright. They appear to be the whitest portion of the whole image.
Otherwise it's excellent. The leaves in the foreground are especially clever. Since they're more saturated than the rest of the image it really adds a sense of depth.

The white teeth got mentioned before. I absolutely agree that I made them too white. As far as the face goes..I dunno - I am more an naturalistic artist or it's probably the style I work in. It's not out of a toothpaste add thought ;)

Hi Kyena, outstanding work indeed! Interestingly, the girl itself is identical copy of my ex-girlfriend (I should have a photo somewhere). That makes the work even more appealing and of course it grieves me that we have split up..
P.S. if she has your lineament then your next work definitely should be self-portrait!

Good job my friend. Reminds me of my favourite painter Rembrandt H. Van Rijn with a little touch of Eugene De la Croix.
Baroque meets Realism.
Two thumbs up (Matter of fact I raise my two toes in addition)
Natascha, its nice to see your beautiful work getting proper recoginition here. congrats!
what strikes me the most in this picture is the slightly brighter, and more saturated autumn leaves floating around her. adds so much depth, motion and emotion to the image.
good work ^^

First of all I want to say, Welcome to cgtalk.
I want to congratulate you with your excellent drawing.
I like to mono colour feeling of it, and it is material to sell.
I do not agree that the teeth r too bright, it kinda gives it a focal wich is very nice.
where as it is the cross between autumn and winter, winter is very clean but cold. autumn is the time of year when the old disapears for the winter, gets cleaned up.
If you want critics then I´ll give you some.
I only have an issue with the nose and the net.
I would remove the net to get her beautifull face more daylight.
the nose looks a little too much piggish, but not on a amatourish way.
because u do show a prof. skill in this drawing and I hope that u continue this. :)
A perfect picture would be a photograph so that is not what we want.

Beautiful work! I like the hair and the ribbons on the dress and how they follow the cloth's surface. The facial expression is just wonderful, but why did you cover it with this net?
Kyena
10-18-2004, 11:55 AM
Once more - thanks a lot for all the compliments and the award!
I am very proud and honored about this :)
About the net:
Part of the idea to show the depressive side of autumn was to include some kind of funeral elements. Thus the idea with the black cape and the veil. Having a full black vail however didnt work for two reasons a) I didn't want to cover to much of her face fully and b) it reminded me too much of arabian culture (not necessarily a bad thing but you know what I mean :))
So I decided to go with the net - In my opinion she had still a widowy touch without cutting off too much of her facial expression.

Beautiful image.
Swiss artists seem quite rare, i was 15 years in Schaffhausen before moving to Canada. Besides some live-roleplayers and their fantasy fanzines which seemed all a bit to extreme for my taste, i never meet anyone remotely artsy there.
have fun.

Wow. Well done. Instant succes on CGTalk.
I was going to give a reply as simple as 'she is beautiful!!' I assumed it was a guy that had made it (no offence). But then u say u based some of her expression on you??.. :p
YOU are beautiful, as well as your piece. The picture that was posted saying it had similarities to yours, I have to say does not compare.
Very nice pose. Good choice of colours. the neck does seem to be extraordinarily long. the skin on the face does seem to be a little too perfect, (when compared to the hands). I love the gold colour of the leaves that are blowing in front of her face, when it contrasts with the slightly more greyer areas behind.
Really a very beautiful piece. Congrats.

Excellent work!
You're saying that the subject is not really original, I have to disagree, even if its a simple pose like this one, doing a great work on it may be even more difficult than on something very particular!!
The woman is very expressive, I like the way you've done the hands, or hair, with just the essential touch, and the golden color you've chosen for the general feeling of the painting gives a warm touch to all the composition(is this the right word, sometimes my English seems to disappear LOL!)...
Great!!
