View Full Version : Duplicating Edges
javierdl 08-17-2002, 02:45 AM I know, I know...
This one is more than simple and silly. But for the life of me I can't figure it out!!!! :(
I have been modeling for months already, and all of a sudden I can't duplicate an edge like I used to, by holding down Shift and then drag it to any direction.
It is just not happenning any longer!
Can anyone enlighten me please?! :)
By the way, this is an Editable Poly I'm working with.
Thanks in advance,

You cant extrude an edge in editable poly mode. I think there is a script that allows you to do this, tho i dont know the name of it.....i could do with it myself.

*You can still do this in EditableMesh.
*You cannot do this in EPoly in max 4 (never could)
*You can do this in EPoly in max 5 with open Edges (but cannot with internal ones as it would create illegal winged edges data)

Just so you know it's a max problem and not your problem (until you get max 5). Our character modelling teacher (whom I really respect) likes to convert the model from polys to mesh and back just to get this feature (shift-copy edges). The problem is you lose your instanse connection to the other half of the model and have to mirror it again.
You can get Epoly2 script and replace max's Epoly with it but personally I wasn't able to make it work properly. It copied each edge individually creating double vertices. Maybe I don't know how to use it.

WOW!
It's funny how the seemingly silliest questions can get such good and many aswers :)
Thanks to all very much, you have certainly enlighten me :)

There is a recompiled version of editable poly written by Michael Duffy. It has the addition of edge extrude. You can find it at www.maxplugins.de. Search for "epoly".
Use it at your own risk!! It caused me a lot of trouble. Max crashed after a while using it and created corrupted files.
Maybe this has been fixed, I don't know. Check it out.

I've been using the E-Poly2.dlo, with flawless perfomance for months, that will amend max's deficiency in that situation!:)

I also use another epoly.dlo version and it works just fine since extruding edges is my favorite modeling type. I can't really tell where i got it from but you can pm and i can send it to you. That don't cause any copyright problems because the plugin is free as far as i can remember. :wip:

You know, I take my words back. I tried Epoly2 again and it seems to be working great. I didn't try it long enough to tell how stable it is, but it's perfectly functional.
Does max 5 have a proper extrude gizmo? Like with scale, rotate and move options?
you wont lose your instance connection if you do a "turn to poly" or "turn to mesh" modifier and then collapse TO it. i suppose this could even be macro'd to a key for quick switching.

I guess I'll have to take my other words back. I wish I knew it before. It's a good tip, actually.
