View Full Version : Painful Rigging = Easier Animation
GRMac13 08-17-2002, 01:48 AM I am trying to learn the best ways to set up characters for animation. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good tutorials on advanced character rigging using IK systems in Max. I'm looking for rigs that can be set up to react more like a real bones system would. For example, right now I am learning a rig set-up where you use a "reverse" IK chain and proxies in the foot to create a realistic heel-toe motion. Anyone have any links to good resources?

Try www.comet-cartoons.com i think there are some tuts on their for character rigging. You can also download the character rigger script which is a fantasic tool that automatically rigs characters. I use it cause i dont really enjoy doing character rigs but if you need to do your own you could always reverse engineer it as its quite an advanaced and flexible setup.
You should get hold of the Alias Wavefront rigging training DVD (From their site I think). Jason Schleifer (from WETA) shows how he does his rigging and it's really beautiful. I think you also get tons of accompanying papers, scripts and examples to go with it.
I sound so uncertain because we have one of the DVDs here at work but I've only seen the clip myself.

forgot to mention that although it's for Maya, the ideas behind it are transferable to any program

Looks like he is updating for Max5, but his old stuff is in zip files. I can't wait for the update.

Thanx guys. Those were some good links. Wiro, I couldn't find the DVD's on the A|W site. This is all I found

Oh, I typed in "Jason Schleifer Rigging" in the search, but I didn't see any DVD's. Just a book and a couple videos on Facial set-ups. Anyway, no biggie, I think I have enough info now to cobble some decent rigs together.
Give this a look

Thanx Wiro. That looks like some great reference material. Unfortuantely for me, it's a little on the pricey side (I'm a student AND I'm unemployed). Maybe I'll put this one on my Christmas wish list (along with alot of other CG related crap, lol) The only thing that I'm uneasy about is that it's for Maya Although you did say that the techniques could be applied to Max, but how many of the tools are the same in Maya? I'm worried that some of the custom controls may be MEL driven, in which case I would be lost as I'm still trying to get a handle on MaxScript. Anyways, thanx for the link, I plan on diving into Maya in a few months, so maybe I'll end up splurging on it anyway.
