At first I want to say, the starting of the avalanche and the dynamic of the house-fragments (I forgot to reactivate a spin) are really out of the question. I hadn´t the time to tweak more on that. I made only one testrendering of the animation, the second animation rendering is the final :hmm:

I started in week two of the challenge I think. After 5 or 6 days of testing and tweaking in 3ds max 6 I started the final render. Everything is very low poly as you can see when you look at the trees. They are just a rendered AEC-Tree, mapped on three planes, each at 60 degrees rotated. The rendering was done on a single AMD CPU. At first I wanted to render at 640x320 but the time was too short. It was even not enough to finish the rendering of the current smaller resolution so it stops too early
For the rule-based particle dynamics I used thinking particles 2.0 . When the particles of the avalanche hit a tree it gets cut down. That´s it. The volumetrics came from pyrocluster 3.0. Here is also still some tweaking needed.

There´s nothing more special to say about it. If you have some questions, feel free to ask here or write me an email :)

ok i had a bit of spare time today *yay!*

so i figured i'd have a go at this, both for a bit of fun, and to do some testing of newer storm tracer features as i write em, so it turned out useful too!

anyhow it's far from perfect, loads to perfect particle simulation wise, and i'm sure i totally break a bunch of rules too! messing around with post, keyframing the camera etc, so i hope no-one will mind, and not take this entry too seriously, it's just a fun little test for me. if i get more time tomorrow (as now i'm back on the coding case) i'll be able to mess around more with the particle simulation to make it better, more focused tunnel shapes etc, and of course adding some things to be destroyed

oh, and software used - cinema 4d with cebas thinking particles, and storm tracer. adobe after effects, photoshop.

Unfortunately I didn't have enough time to put any trees or exploding buildings or anything, so it's just the mountain and the snow. It's still got some issues, but this is as finished as it's going to get by the deadline. I may keep working on this once the challenge is over...depends on how ambitious I feel. :D

Details about the scene:

I did this in Lightwave 7.5, (so no hardbody dynamics), so I had to kinda fudge the chunks of the mountain breaking away by using C4 (an explosion plugin, for those who don't know). I rendered out a bunch of layers which gave me some more flexibility within After Effects to try to hide as many rendering errors as possible... :wip: Total time was about 4 weeks, whenever I had time on nights and weekends (which wasn't that often!). Not sure what other info to include...if anyone wants to ask questions, feel free.

btw...I'm not sure why those images are showing up as links and not within the thread itself. Oh well...whatever.

ok, its finish! :D

so, like many i assume, so many things to work on again to have "good" result..
anyway, heres the final render i have.
for the time i take, its quite hard to say 'cause i only works on this during my free time, after work or week end. i spend like one week to set up this scene. spend like 5 days to make model, test and makes calculs, and 2 days to light, surface, render and composite.
i really dont like trees and mountain surface and textures, but as i work on them only few times.. i let them like the first time i set up, with only procedural(as you can see it... :) )
so, full lightwave 8 dynamics, no key(excepted baked key from dynamics calcul for the particules), rendered in layer and composited in shake.

they were great.

ACantarel, the snow flakes growing out of nowhere on the beginning of the animation annoyed me. the way that the little house literally exploded wasn't that believable to me but the avalance in itself and the whole ambientation was very well done.

Sadie, from the video, it SEEMS to be perfect. i love the cloud that it forms. but i can't consider this since the video itself shows very little of the avalance itself. not much on the formation, nor it going downhill. i see just the cloud. i believe you should've dropped the ground camera and gone for an aerial view to better show your work. but the ambientation is awesome and the whole post processing looks really nice.

TripleG, i was really happy to see that in your animation you actually have the sheets of ice sliding down the side of the mountain on formation. but the avalanche itself didn't look as if it was coming downhill for me. the harder white stains really stood out and looked pretty still.

Yan, i really like, too, that you had the verocimious formation of an avalanche in there - the whole block of ice sliding, then the clouds. i really like your clouds too. i was just a little sad at the ambient and the path that the avalanche followed. i think you could've explored more the path and made it more sinuous. but i like very much they way that your avalance tore down trees and the house.

wow, really nice work all around!!

TripleG - I too really dig your surface cracking -- and if you could somehow simulate the snow cloud being pulled downhill by the force of the slide you'd have a stronger entry.

Acantarel - I like what you acheived between the start of the animation and right before the slide hits that building -- all those tendrils of fast moving snow are quite convincing. I think you could take a few clues from TripleG on how the avalanche starts -- I can understand there would be bursting ... but it's all so uniform looking - some surface sliding would really do it some good. The buildings destruction runs a bit too fast - some elements should take over twice as long to reach their apex. I'd also drop that smashing sound - there's no way you'd hear it from that distance ... maybe a sonic boom would be better -- something lowend. A terrific set!

mdme_sadie - at first glass I thought you cheated and submitted a liveaction shot. haha. Overall quite strong - I'd suggest you add some of Acantarel's fast moving - densely packed snow tentrils in a few spots - just a little too uniform. Overall a very awesome peice!

Yann - you really showcased your avalanche quite well - I shook my fist in celebration as the cottage was eliminated - oh I wish it had kept going !! Acantarel really acheived something terrific with those tendrils (geez, how many times have I used that word now ? haha ) I think if you added a few at the leading edge of the avalanche it could (heaven forbid) be even stronger. Extrodinary simulation, keep up the good work!

I find, as other have pointed out, that each piece has some really amazing parts going on. Yet to be critical at this point would leave me redundant. I did find tripeG's entry to hold what I felt the most realistic simulation, in particular, the sheets that break away in the begining.
Aside from the wonderful work in AFX, mdme_sadie's use of the camera and every growing plume of snow rolling upon itself as it travels down the mountain has my vote for animation and overall piece. I'm currently on holiday in Colorado, and the mountain feels real with its size and presence, something I've been seeing all day!

Wow, what a strong challenge---
I am not really very< sim-literate so I can only give my very subjective opinion:
All entries are really impressing.
Mmme_Sadies entry is the visually most impressing, but lacks the nice details like trees being hit or the hoese that Yann & ACantarel have.
ACantarels sim is very impressive, too.
but somehow seems too fast & not as heavy as Yanns.

I would vote:

The only thing that was bad in Yanns entry was the fact that the snowclouds just froze in mid air... If they hadnt stopped but shrunk (?) towards the ground it would have been top ace!

Cantarel's was really good, but the strange start took down the overall appearance. It was a really good one after the start though.

All the other's were ok but to me worst was mdme_sadie's all I saw was shakey camera movement and smoke. No simulation was present.
But the mountian looked nice and he had some nice filters on the camera too.
I likes andre's because it looked like an avalanche. The snow felt like it had weight to it. except the beginning when it apeares like pop-corn. But that's my only complaint for him.
Yann was a hands down winner good beginning solid simulation and great looking snow.

mdme_sadie Yours looked the most convincing and real to life. The simulation and animation was great. I would've liked to have seen more of it: When the snow starts becoming a little more definite in shape. But overall fantastic

ACantarel (http://www.cgtalk.com/member.php?u=56555)
Watching yours really made me feel on edge. I got a feel for the intensity from it. Using sound was a really smart idea and made the piece. The rendering and atmosphere could've used a little more to make it seem more real. Also, maybe using more big globbs of snow together would've made it seem more real, as avalanches are usually monsterous waves of snow, with smaller particles of snow shooting out of it. I felt with yours that it looked to much like giant snowballs rolling down a mountain. Also, the snow seems to grow out of the mountain instead of falling off.

Triple G
The cracks on top of the mountain rock. It looks really convincing. However, after the snow falls it looks for like a waterfall of cotton. It starts really cool, but the actual avalanche could use some more work on it and some more experimentation. I see with the camera work you were going for a handheld-home-movie effect. What would've made it more convincing is more quick and shaky movements. Especially zoomed into something that far away (the mountain), one mm of movement might move the subject halfway off the frame. So the whole 'slowly moving down the mountain while the snow falls' could be reworked.

Yan
As with Acantarel, your snow seems to just grow or appear at the top of the mountain. I don't get a sense that the snow was to heavy to remain in it's current position so it had to fall until something stopped it's motion, the ground (the whole newton's law deal) I would've also liked to have seen the snow accumulate more. It seems like one river of snow falling. In reality, it might have conjurred tons more snow on the edges of the avalanche to create an even more powerful fall. And why did you stop at the end? It would've given such a sense of power if you let the avalanche run into the camera with sever camera shakes! You get scared looking at it come your way, then it stops:-/ But good effect overall

Awesome job everyone, there are so many things that, if you worked together, would've had an AMAZING effect. So much to learn from each other I'm sure. Sound always adds an effect to it, and seeing that this is an FX challenge, why not use all the tools in the box?!

Future FX challenge: Popping a pimple and seeing the distance you get with it!? Could be interesting without keyframing?

Im kinda annoyed with all of these to be honest. Everyone had GIANT clouds of snow floating away, especially when it started, this is not very accurate. It only starts kicking clouds up when the terrain had a rapidly changing fall line, for instance when it gets going fast enough to fly off rolling hills, or drop down a large rock line. Even in very large scale avalances the fine particles arent that big. Its more like a mud slide most of the time. (I was Alpine Meadows ski patrol in 92/93)

here is stock footage from Teton Gravity Research, great team. http://www.tetongravity.com/stock/avifast.htm

Best Simulation: mdme_sadie
Best Animation: mdme_sadie
Best Overall Entry: mdme_sadie

You know I voted based on what looked the best in the three categories -from the view I was given. I think that the views should almost be arbitrary, as we are looking for the best procedurally simulated scene.. Not the best person to try to hide his popping hypervoxels by cropping and blurring the 'virtual camera'. Everyone did this to some extent: 'oh, the camera is out of focus', or 'lets zoom into right here'.

As for others, some people spent all this time adding props, atmosphere, tons of things, when their particle simulations weren't even fixed, someone had popping and serious lifespan issues on their particles, yet spent hours adding tons of fluff to their scene..

hmm.. i made a simple "slide" motion for the camera, just to see all the avalanche, without blur..just little motion blur
no more noize or shake motion, just to show all as is it..
no zoom envelop too..
so, no "special" effects..
i personaly dont "try to hide...", and spend way more time to set up dynamics than choose the "good hiden angle" for cam as you said...and think its the same for the others..
but, if its your opinion... :)

Great job for all entry. But Yan's simulation are really the best imho I agree! Great job everyone! I had my choice made and then I downloaded Yans at the end and changed my decision. I like the way everything is clear and understandable. It would have been nice at the end if the camera stopped a bit closer and the snow went underneath, but still... it's the best IMHO. The house destruction was also the most realistic. So if I give the first two votes for yan, I guess that obliges me to give the third one too?

Best Simulation : Yann
Best Animation : Yann
Best Overall Entery: Yann

But ofcourse everyone did a great job!

Woa, all four were amazing. I really had a hard time deciding.

Best simulation: Yann
Best animation: mdme
Best overall entry: Yann

mdme: Yours is very good, but the simulation at the end I find it somehow weird... Probably yours is the best textures too...
Acantarel: Your simulation doesn't start very well, it looks like the snow is "appearing" instead of falling. Near the end that gets fixed, but...
TripleG: How did you do those cracks?!?!? They look amazing. I think yours had the potential to be the best one, but we don't get to see what happens. It's too short, and too far away :(
Yann: If it weren't for the trees, it would look real!! :)

Well, all this begs the question....where's your entry then? Come on, man...we're doing this for fun...lighten up.

Yan, I wanted to apologize, when I posted my reply your link was down and there wasn't yet a mirror (not that I saw). Yours was what I think they all should have been like as far as views and presentation.
