This is a head I built a short time ago. The renders are self illuminated and I've posted a wireframe grab of the head to show how I go about things. I decided to post this and the texture flat, because alot of people have been asking to see the ones I have created for other models I have posted, which at the moment I dont want to post.
The texture is unfinished, as is the model and I waws trying an experiment on the hair using a small black and white image as an opacity map (hence the blury edge around it)
Anyway feel free to ask any questions.

Looks very nice as usual - excellent head modeling and texture. Its not quite perfect yet though. A few pointers:

*Hair looks too straw like - maybe add a few layers on top in a slightly different colour.
*The hair alphas dont really add to the overall look - make them stand out more & randomise them a bit.
*The scars dont look quite right - it looks more like hes been crying or something. Maybe saturate them some more.

Looks great so far - especially considering its all hand painted maps. Are you gonna make a body for him?

Hey Andy
I dont think this guy will get a body, I have plans for a male character and I like to think of this as a warm up/experiment stage. All the points you raised a relevant and are things I would work on (perhaps will) but I wanted to post this so people would get a clearer idea of how I work.
Out of work I always like to hand paint my characters, its allot more fun than using a photo and it helps me learn/improve allot to. ;D

most scars kind of extrude a little from the skin. they are puffy looking. if you just give it a little shadow underneath it will make it pop right out.

Cool head, The scar is bugging the shit out of me, though, because I have no idea what could possibly cause a scar that meanders like that. Especially because it's so light that it doesn't look like it was a deep, recent scar. Also, there should be either some puff or some indentation on the scar, depending on how taught the skin is (I've got a scar above one eye that changes as I make faces ; )
