Title: Scarred Gentleman
Name: Roderick Van Der Steen
Country: Netherlands
Software: 3ds max, Brazil r/s

This image was created because I always wanted to do a devilish character, but masked in a stylish character that isnt red or has fire coming out of his eyes/ears, I chose the horns to make that the only reference to the devilish look, and let the expression of the face do the rest.

The process of creating this model and the final image started with modelling the head, and after I got the basic shape blocked out I painted a couple of hairstyles over a screengrab from the viewport. After that I did some r&d to see what technique I should use for the hairs in the beard and on his head.
Because I chose for a sleek gentleman's hairstyle I used textures and displacement for the head hair, and for the beard I used Advanced Painter(by Herman Saksono) to paint the hairs.
I desided to create the beard in a couple of layers to be able to change the colour in composite and still have variation.

I then started detailing the model further, by modelling and displacement maps.
After I created the hair and painted the various texturemaps+ detailed the model, I setup the materials and shaders and started lighting. I used a arealight and a selfmade Hdri image to light the set. I also used this one the beard layers and created one big shadowpass for the hairs. all the rendering was done in brazil r/s.

I then created the (quite simple) background, and then composited all the layers together in Roach 1.0, with a color corrector on almost every layer.

I am quite happy how the final image turned out, although there is always room for improvement, for me this is the final piece and its time to move on.
It has come a very long way, and I would like to thank the people(you know who you are) that looked at it every time and gave me ideas and pointed out stuff I didnt see anymore.

Pretty real.

It seems as if he has a layer of latex over his face, I think that is the displacements, unless there is detailed negative area it makes thing look a bit blown up (also ears).

The nose structure seems incorrect especially by the tip and nostrils.

A facial close up is always dangerous (but the most fun) I reckon if you put a bit more into the anatomy you could milk out more expression.

Great stuff
Keep em comin.

Very nice! The character has a great expression on his face.

My only complaints is that it is too much grain/noise in the picture.

realistically rendered out. Same as previous post, finds the grainy effect on the face too much personally. Nice work nonetheless, keep it up!
