Looking to model something like this, if you have any tips, or tricks, please, drop a message!

I was thinking about doing a spline and then rail extrude that way, but then I would have some problems with the box part of the model.

Couldn't you just to a rail extrusion like you were going to, then flip the polygons, sub divide the surface as much as you need, and then bevel the polygons? Maybe use radom select to have diffrent surface settings for diffrent groups of Polys? Better yet why not just make highrez UV clipmap that goes down the length of your tube using UV spider?
