Hello everyone.

I thought I´d post the first 3d I do in ages. I am a moderate fan of Star Wars old movies, and I always wanted to model Darth Vader, but didn´t have decent reference (yeah I know, this has been done a thousand times, not original at all, but I just think the subject tis cool, and a good modelling exercise).

Now I could capture some frames from the “making of the Darth Vader costume” documental on the trilogy DVDs, and finally I got there. I am quite proud of it, but I would like to have some feedback on how to improve it, ´cause being too involved sometimes doesn´t let you see obvious mistakes.

The most difficult thing is to get the proportions right, so if you got some ideas, let me hear them!.

I am not too happy with a couple of things. I don´t know what it is, but they just don´t look right to me :

1. The bridge of the nose
2. The eye-glasses

And there are still two things that need to be done, but they´re unlikely to be seen, so I don´t know wether to bother by modelling them:

1. The small dents in the cheeks
2. The grid under the chin

Anyway, tell me what you think!

"I'm your father Luke"
"Nooooooooooooo"

Looks pretty real to me.. maybe add a littlle sharpness to the shader.. it doesn';t catch that hard platic feel.. If you know what I mean!

Good stuff! You're right, the eyes are a little off; they're too flat, there's some curvature to the glass of the lenses, and they are much darker, not red. The top of the bridge of the nose is not rounded enough. Overall it seems like it needs more detail. Great job on the shaders and lighting, you got the shiny plastic surface just right.

Thanks for your support.

Bastiaan:

I have removed the specularity, and now the shining comes only from raytrace. I will also look for other plastic looks and post any improvements.

Ryland:

Agree with you. The glasses are difficult ´cause in the reference that area is always dark and hard to see. In some of the movies there is a slight red tint to them, but perhaps I exagerated the effect a bit. I will fix the bridge of the nose too. Can you suggest any other details, apart from the dents on the cheeks?

Danielovich:

ENLISH: Thanks a lot, I would really like to have the required time, skills, and patience to model the entire body. The truth is that I use to 3D in intense sessions, and after that I get fed up and then I spend weeks without touching it. If I decide to carry on, I will be posting to get some feedback and suggestions.

Thanks again

Looking sweet. Love the shader, although the complete nerd in me can't help but notice that the proportions are *slightly* off.

I'm thinking about doing one of these down the road and found this in my research; check this site, it's pretty dope:

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/bingo275/fan.htm

Not just that page, but all over the site, are a zillion images of the actual film-used helmets from two or three hundred thousand different angles. I think the right reference will make your model really pop.

Good luck and awesome work so far!
